An experimental study of the friction of metals which have been coated with inorganic films by reaction with their surrounding atmosphere. The specimens are first cleaned at high temperature in vacuo and then heated in the selected reactive vapor. Many coatings will prevent seizure and give a fairly constant but high coefficient of friction up to high temperatures. Layer-lattice compounds such as MoS2, CrCl3, and TiI2 give much lower friction at all temperatures below those at which the film decomposes or evaporates (about 850 C for molybdenum disulphide). A film of boron nitride formed on boron shows a high intrinsic friction, but this can be reduced by certain vapors or by raising the temperature above about 800 C. Most of the experiments were performed with very light loads but the films are shown to be effective under kilogram loads. A simple indentation test capable of selecting lubricants under loads up to 12 tons is described. This shows that a film formed by heating stainless steel in CCl2F2 will lubricate at 400 C when the steel is deformed by over 50 per cent.

Some features ofstructure, way of production and mechanical properties of titanium andtwo-phase titanium alloys with ultrafine-grained (UFG) microstructure werediscussed. Various methods of UFG structure formation was considered andoptimal conditions for attaining of a homogeneous microstructure with thesmallest grain size were determined. The kinetics of microstructure evolutionin titanium and two-phase titanium alloys during large (severe) plasticdeformation in a wide temperature interval and the mechanisms of ultrafinegrain formation were analyzed. The influence of grain size on static mechanicalproperties was determined. Significantly reduced temperatures of superplasticforming of the UFG conditions were shown. Some examples of practical applicationsof the UFG two-phase titanium alloys were discussed.

Thermopower, magnetothermopower resistivity and magnetoresistance of single crystal samples Re(1-x)SrxMnO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3, Re = Nd, Sm) were studied in wide temperature interval, included the Curie temperature TC. Giant maxima of resistivity and thermopower, very big negative magnetothermopower and magnetoresistance were found in TC region. So, a giant maximum of thermopower in TC was found, which suppressed by magnetic field. Simultaneous magnetic field destroys magneto-impurity states – ferrons as evidenced the maxima resistivity and magnetoresistance in TC Hence it follows that giant thermopower in manganites are produced by ferrons and its value is set by the quantity of impurities, that is the concentration of impurities and the volume of sample.
