Abstract This paper prolongs our studies of the formation and properties of the organic-inorganic scintillating compositions from activated polystyrene and inorganic nanoparticles from cesium iodid and sulfate. The compositions from the solution of polystyrene in benzene and nano- or micro-particles of cesium iodide were solidified in the form of thin films. Then some of the films were subjected to rolling. The variations of the infrared transmission spectra of the compositions were measured either during their solidification or after the solidification and rolling. The new absorption band was revealed in the process of the solidification and disappeared after it. The fractal-like structures of parallel rows were formed in the films. Quasi-periodical oscillations of the transmission spectra were found in several infrared regions ascribed to the interaction of the infrared radiation with the fractal super-structure of the films. The modifications of the absorption spectra found in our experiments are attributed to the interactions of polystyrene molecules with benzene molecules and nanoparticles of cesium iodide.

A comparison of near-infrared (NIR) and mid-infrared (mid-IR) techniques for the determination of hydroxyl number in polyesters was made. Both of these analyses are faster and involve less exposure to irritating, highly toxic, and corrosive chemicals than the chemical analysis, although both techniques rely on developing calibration files. The mid-IR procedure consisted of making thin films of polymer on IR crystals by spin coating and taking transmission spectra. The program used for the analysis, Nicolet PLS Quant, compensated for the resulting indeterminate pathlength. The NIR procedure consisted of taking transmission spectra of the clear, viscous polymers in 4-mm cuvettes and using standard regression analysis of the spectra.

<div><div>Scattering-mode Scanning Near-Field Optical Microscopy (sSNOM) allows one to obtain absorption spectra in the mid-IR region for samples as small as 20 nm in size. This configuration has made it possible to measure FTIR spectra of the protein complement of membranes. (Amenabar 2013) We now show that mid-IR sSNOM has the sensitivity required to measure spectra of phospholipids in individual bilayers in the spectral range 800 cm-1–1400 cm-1. We have observed the main absorption bands of the dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine headgroups in this spectral region above noise level. We have also mapped the phosphate absorption band at 1070 cm-1 simultaneously with the AFM topography. We have shown that we could achieve sufficient contrast to discriminate between single and multiple phospholipid bilayers and other structures, such as liposomes. This work opens the way to further research that uses nano-IR spectroscopy to describe the biochemistry of cell membranes and model systems.</div></div><div></div>
