Reproductive biology is one of the biological aspects that needed to formulate responsible management of blue swimming crab (BSC). The crab is one of the commercial fisheries commodities in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Presently no information on the reproductive biology of this crab from Spermonde Archipelago, Sout Sulawesi. Therefore, the study aimed to analyze and compare gonad maturity stage(GMS)andgonadalsomaticindex(GSI)oftheBSCcaughtonthreeecosystemsnamelycoralreef, seagrass, andmangrovein Salemo Island, Spermonde Archipelago. GMS and GSI were analyzed descriptively for five months from March to July 2015. Results indicate there was a difference in GMS of the BSC caught in mangroves, seagrass, and coral reef. Generally, mangrove was dominated by immature BSC with GMS I and GMS II, while the BSC caught in the seagrass and coral reef BSC were dominantly mature and spawn GMS III, IV, and V. GSI BSC caught in mangrove ecosystem are smaller than GSI BSC caught in seagrass and coral reef ecosystems. Seagrass and coral reef ecosystems suitable for development no-take zone of the BSC.

Index of stock abundance of Lizardfish (Saurida micropectoralis) in Java Sea tend to decreased from year to year. The decline was expected because of the potential of Lizardfish decreasing but the effort continue to rise. The objective of this study is to assess the biological aspects including length-weight relationship, sex ratio, gonadal maturity stage, length of first capture (Lc) and length of first mature (Lm), and feeding habit of Lizardfish in north waters of Central Java. This study was conducted from April to August 2009 in north waters of Central Java. Results showed that the sex ratio between males and females was 1:0,97. Based on Chi-square test it is showed that sex ratio is not balanced. The growth of Lizardfish indicated positive allometric where the weight growth more faster than its length growth. The gonadalmaturity stage of Lizard fish is dominated by the first stage. The length of first capture of Lizardfish was under the length of first mature (Lc < Lm) so that will threaten its sustainability. Lizardfish was indicated carnivorous species where its main food are part of demersal fishes, squids and anchovies.

Phyllodiscus semoni is a morphologically variable sea anemone species from the Indo-Pacific with morphotypes ranging from upright and branched to low-lying and rounded. The apparent camouflage strategies of this sea anemone allow it to resemble other species or objects in its environment, such as stony corals, soft corals, seaweeds, or rocky boulders covered by algae, which may help it to avoid recognition by potential predators. Occasionally, it occurs in aggregations that may result from asexual reproduction. A high level of intraspecific morphological variation, including co-occurring aggregations of three different morphotypes, was observed in the Spermonde Archipelago off Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The co-occurrence of aggregations with different morphotypes suggests that Phyllodiscus is a highly polymorphic monospecific genus. Sea anemones of this genus are not frequently encountered at other localities and the number of morphotypes seems large. Therefore, it is unlikely that we are dealing with more than one species that are all concentrated in a single area. Phyllodiscus sea anemones are considered dangerous to humans because their nematocysts contain highly toxic venoms that may inflict harmful stings. Therefore they are the subject of recent toxicological studies. The present paper aims to assist in the recognition of these highly variable hazardous animals and to discuss the appearance of their aggregations.

<p>Tank goby (<em>Glossogobius giuris</em>) is a commonly fish found in coastal area. This study was aimed to investigate reproduction of the fish. Samples were collected from July to December 2005 from fish caught by fishermen using gill net and trap net in Ujung Pangkah Waters. Analysis was done to estimate sex ratio, gonad maturity, gonado somatic index, fecundity, and oocyte diameter. During the observation, the tank goby fish was 198 individual consisted of 112 male and 86 female fish varied 63‒230 mm in total body length. Sex ratio was around 1:1.1. First maturity gonad of male was 111‒134mm and female was 87‒110 mm total body length, respectively. According to gonad maturity stage and gonado somatic index, the fish was estimated to spawn from July to December. During July and August, the gonad maturity stage and gonado somatic index were higher indicating a lot of spawning fish during those months. Fecundity was 10,640‒150,639eggs and oocyte diameter was 49‒372 µm. Based on the oocyte distribution, the fish was estimated apartial spawner<em>.</em></p> <p>Keywords: Ujung Pangkah Waters, reproduction, tank goby,<em>Glossogobius giuris</em></p>

Bigeye scad (Selar crumenophthalmus) dominantly caught by fishers in the Natuna watersof South China Sea. The intensive exploitation rate of this species by purse seiner led to population decrease. The understanding on biological aspect of bigeye scad is important as a consideration on arranging a proper management. This study aims to analyze biological reproduction of bigeye scad in the Natuna waters, such as sex ratio, length at first maturity, length at first capture, gonad maturity stage and the estimation of spawning season. This research is conducted by sampling the fishes that caught by purse seine fleets which is landed in AFP Pemangkat, West Borneo for 5 years (2012 to 2016). The result showed that sex ratio of males and females were balance by 1:1,05. It dominated by fish that are ripening stage. Spawning season happens twice per year which are in the beginning of east season on June to July and at the beginning of west season on December to January. Length at first capture (L50%) is 18 cmFL lower than length at first maturity (Lm = 20,2 cmFL) this condition indicated growth overfishing occurred in this fishery.

Spermonde Archipelago in South Sulawesi is among groupers sources in Indonesia for International Marine Live Trade. It was not much known which species are mostly exploited in those areas during the study because only fin clip samples could be obtained. Here we performed DNA forensic analysis to groupers fin clips collected from Spermonde Archipelago using barcode marker to know what species were exploited and which ones was the most exploited species. A total of 110 fin clip samples were obtained during the field trips. Sequencing of the cytochrome c oxidase 1 gene was successful for only 36 samples. Species determination was based on sequences similarity to conspecific sequence available in barcoding of life database (BOLD). BOLD similarity test placed the 36 fin clip samples into four different species, namely Cromileptes altivelis, Epinephelus ongus, Plectropomus leopardus, and Plectropomus maculatus. The K-2P taxonomic tree showed clear separation among species which was supported by high K2P genetic distances among species. Most of fin clips were identified as Plectropomus leopardus indicates that this species was the most exploited in Spermonde Archipelago. This proved that molecular identification not only can be used to biodiversity study in certain area but also in forensic analysis of a threatened wildlife. This study has important contribution for conservation effort of those groupers species, especially P. leopradus and provides new approach for taxonomist and conservation managers to identify samples, especially when only incomplete specimens are available.
