Detouring between buildings subverts well-worn paths and reveals untapped space designated to Toronto’s extensive laneway network. Exploratory walks followed by creative transcription of the findings capture fragments that would otherwise go unnoticed. By harnessing new ways of reading the lane space, the proposed project envisions a lane-building-street hybrid, rich with urban retreats and alternate pedestrian paths. Through the reinterpretation of an existing laneway block as a catalyst, the scheme explores strategies that grant this hybrid space to curious strollers, challenging highly-regulated and standardized street space as the primary means of moving through the contemporary city. These strategies invigorate the role of architecture in enhancing the quality of urban life, rewarding pedestrians with access to the city through new routes, expanded public realm, and countless discoveries.

This paper focuses on the issue of vitality in urban public spaces, streets in particular, as a major indicator of their success and as one of the determinants of livable cities. The study first provides a theoretical framework for understanding the social value and role of urban public spaces in quality of urban life. Second, it discusses essential components of vitality in streets. Finally, it investigates vitality and its determinants in two main streets in Famagusta and Kyrenia, in North Cyprus. The paper highlights some issues such as proper connection and proximity to important magnets, along with physical and social attributes in the street area. Abstract THE CITIZENS TOPOPHILIA AND THE NATURAL URBAN PATRIMONY: COIMBRA’S CASE STUDY This paper analyzes the importance of natural patrimony in the urban environment, under the prism of geography. The main objective of this study is to understand how nature is perceived in the city of Coimbra (Portugal) and the role that green areas and natural patrimony has in the quality of urban life. To achieve these objectives, this article discusses the conceptual argument about environmental perception, topophilia and the nature in the city. For this, it was used two different procedures: (1) Field analysis on the city of Coimbra with purpose to setting up a photographic database, to verify the presence, conservation and relationship to the natural patrimony inserted in urban environment; (2) Investigation through interviews in two neighborhoods of the city – Vale das Flores and Monte Formoso. The data revealed that the perception and the topophilic relationship to urban green areas are marked by the contradiction between practice and discourse. It was concluded that the presence of natural patrimony in the urban environment still present itself as a secondary issue. Moreover, it was concluded that to strengthen this relationship symbolically and/or functionally the natural patrimony must be present throughout all the continuous urban areas and should not be restricted to elite neighborhoods or parks.

Sustainable urban mobility adds a new dimension to the circulation of goods and people in the city: sustainability. The increasing number of individual motor vehicles is an accurate urban mobility diagnostic, by highlighting strengths and weaknesses, to guide public policies aimed at improving the quality of urban life. In this paper, the Sustainable Urban Mobility Index has been discussed and then applied to evaluate the sustainable urban mobility in Campinas (SP, Brazil). For the period 2010-2014, the index shows a persistent insufficiency in the sustainable urban mobility of this city, even if there was a slight improvement in the period. This is due to the environmental dimension, considering the increasing fuel consumption. It is therefore necessary to look for possible solutions involving primarily collective transportation and non-motorized one, especially for short distance.

AbstractOne objective of environmental education is that of educating the young to play an active role as members of civil society. A way of promoting this kind of learning is that of engaging the young in participatory activities in which they can contribute to the conception and planning of a better quality of urban life. This paper presents an educative experience based on the assumption that in order for the young to be empowered to become responsible citizens, it is important to grant them the role of “young citizens”, who actively contribute to the construction of a new way of thinking about the quality of urban life and where they are engaged in the production of ideas to be realised in the urban environment. The educational research is framed in the phenomenological-hermeneutic theory of inquiry. The data have been collected from the analysis of the ideas expressed by the participants both in individual written reflections and in conversations in the classroom.

This document compares two videos that date from the same year (1969) and provide a basis for discussion about two different paradigms of urban thinking present in the 1960’s: an interview with Jane Jacobs on the show "The way it is", on Canadian broadcaster CBC, in which she disputes the plans to build Spadina Expressway in Toronto, and a presentation by the then Mayor of São Paulo, Paulo Salim Maluf, on the plans to build Elevado Presidente Costa e Silva (currently named Elevado João Goulart, nicknamed Minhocão [the Big Worm]), an elevated expressway in São Paulo. By confronting the videos, the antagonism of the discourses regarding the role of road infrastructure, the value given to the urban environment, and the idea of quality of urban life becomes clear. The materials are also an illustration of two different outcomes: the halting of the Spadina Expressway works in Toronto and the completion of the Minhocão works in São Paulo.

The examination of the relationship between the construct of urban space and the construct of the quality of urban life is based on the knowledge that their common element is real physical space, i.e., the place. If the examination of the relationship between the two constructs is to be meaningful, then both must be on the same comparative basis—that means quality. The paper consists of two parts—the first part, which is theoretical, takes the form of conceptualization of urban space and the quality of urban life, including the identification of elements which affect them. The result of conceptualizing urban space into a qualitative form is liveability. The result of conceptualizing the quality of urban life is a holistic quality of life in the city, containing two domains—subjective and objective. The second part of the paper is the application of both constructs in a concrete form, based on measuring the values of these indicators and also the analysis of the results. The measurement takes the form of liveability on the one hand and of satisfaction with the place and/or satisfaction with the quality of urban life on the other hand.

The research aims to analyze and evaluate the quality of urban life using modern technologies by engaging residents and experts to choose criteria for analyzing and evaluating the quality of life (QoL)using multi-criteria analysis and a geographic information system to conduct spatial modeling to extract a Qol analysis and evaluation map and determine its geographical ranges. The study showed that (4.44%) represent a high QOL and (47.23%) represent an acceptable QOL and (48.33%) represent a low QOL. The study proved that there are geographical differences between the city center and the suburbs that can be spatially determined.
