This document compares two videos that date from the same year (1969) and provide a basis for discussion about two different paradigms of urban thinking present in the 1960’s: an interview with Jane Jacobs on the show "The way it is", on Canadian broadcaster CBC, in which she disputes the plans to build Spadina Expressway in Toronto, and a presentation by the then Mayor of São Paulo, Paulo Salim Maluf, on the plans to build Elevado Presidente Costa e Silva (currently named Elevado João Goulart, nicknamed Minhocão [the Big Worm]), an elevated expressway in São Paulo. By confronting the videos, the antagonism of the discourses regarding the role of road infrastructure, the value given to the urban environment, and the idea of quality of urban life becomes clear. The materials are also an illustration of two different outcomes: the halting of the Spadina Expressway works in Toronto and the completion of the Minhocão works in São Paulo.

AbstractOne objective of environmental education is that of educating the young to play an active role as members of civil society. A way of promoting this kind of learning is that of engaging the young in participatory activities in which they can contribute to the conception and planning of a better quality of urban life. This paper presents an educative experience based on the assumption that in order for the young to be empowered to become responsible citizens, it is important to grant them the role of “young citizens”, who actively contribute to the construction of a new way of thinking about the quality of urban life and where they are engaged in the production of ideas to be realised in the urban environment. The educational research is framed in the phenomenological-hermeneutic theory of inquiry. The data have been collected from the analysis of the ideas expressed by the participants both in individual written reflections and in conversations in the classroom.

Abstract THE CITIZENS TOPOPHILIA AND THE NATURAL URBAN PATRIMONY: COIMBRA’S CASE STUDY This paper analyzes the importance of natural patrimony in the urban environment, under the prism of geography. The main objective of this study is to understand how nature is perceived in the city of Coimbra (Portugal) and the role that green areas and natural patrimony has in the quality of urban life. To achieve these objectives, this article discusses the conceptual argument about environmental perception, topophilia and the nature in the city. For this, it was used two different procedures: (1) Field analysis on the city of Coimbra with purpose to setting up a photographic database, to verify the presence, conservation and relationship to the natural patrimony inserted in urban environment; (2) Investigation through interviews in two neighborhoods of the city – Vale das Flores and Monte Formoso. The data revealed that the perception and the topophilic relationship to urban green areas are marked by the contradiction between practice and discourse. It was concluded that the presence of natural patrimony in the urban environment still present itself as a secondary issue. Moreover, it was concluded that to strengthen this relationship symbolically and/or functionally the natural patrimony must be present throughout all the continuous urban areas and should not be restricted to elite neighborhoods or parks.

Abstract THE BUILD-IN VALUE CAPITAL AND NEW POPULAR PRIVATE CONDOMINIUMS Currently, the production of horizontal condominiums popular in the cities of São Paulo, has shown significant growth. The role of the developer capital, selecting strategically subjective aspects that refer to standards of living associated with the elite, combined with the ease in financing, exercises significant interest to anyone who is looking to own a home. However, the small size of the homes, the distance at which they are inserted, in addition to the rules and conflicts that pervade everyday life in these spaces, belies the promises of a better ‘quality of life’ from the acquisition of a residence in a condominium. This article presents part of the analysis of research conducted through interviews with residents and future residents of popular condominiums closed in two Paulistas cities: Presidente Prudente and São Carlos.

Detouring between buildings subverts well-worn paths and reveals untapped space designated to Toronto’s extensive laneway network. Exploratory walks followed by creative transcription of the findings capture fragments that would otherwise go unnoticed. By harnessing new ways of reading the lane space, the proposed project envisions a lane-building-street hybrid, rich with urban retreats and alternate pedestrian paths. Through the reinterpretation of an existing laneway block as a catalyst, the scheme explores strategies that grant this hybrid space to curious strollers, challenging highly-regulated and standardized street space as the primary means of moving through the contemporary city. These strategies invigorate the role of architecture in enhancing the quality of urban life, rewarding pedestrians with access to the city through new routes, expanded public realm, and countless discoveries.

Corpo-Mente. Mundo 3.Abstract: In this work, we present a discussion about knowledge and the theory of the three worlds in which the interaction between them approaches to the truth of the mind-body problem, in view of a proposed solution. The third world is an important piece in this work. Therefore, we will analyze what Popper describes as World 3, what it is and the role of language as a differential of human beings. We present Popper’s criticisms to the monistic and dualistic currents, daring to criticize the theory of traditional knowledge. Thus, the proposal of science presented by this philosopher differs from everything that was being done until then. This explains the interest in presenting this unusual approach to Popper. Keywords: Knowledge. Body-Mind.  World 3. REFERÊNCIASLEAL-TOLEDO, Gustavo . WOMEN'S QUALITY OF LIFE AND ASSOCIATED SOCIO DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICSObjective: to analyze the sociodemographic characteristics associated to the perception of the quality of life of the women attended in the Primary Health Care.
