The ultra-low specific speed centrifugal pump has been widely applied in aerospace engineering, metallurgy, and other industrial fields. However, its hydraulic design lacks specialized theory and method. Moreover, the impeller and volute are designed separately without considering their coupling effect. Therefore, the optimal design is proposed in this study based on the local entropy production theory. Four geometrical parameters are selected to establish orthogonal design schemes including blade outlet setting angle, wrapping angle volute inlet width, and throat area. Subsequently, a 3D steady flow with Reynolds stress turbulent model and energy equation model is numerically conducted and the entropy production is calculated by a user-defined function code. The range analysis is made to identify the optimal scheme indicating that the combination of local entropy production and orthogonal design is feasible on pump optimization. The optimal pump is visibly improved with an increase of 1.08% in efficiency. Entropy production is decreased by 16.75% and 6.03% in impeller and volute, respectively. High energy loss areas are captured and explained in terms of helical vortex and wall friction, and the turbulent and wall entropy production are respectively reduced by 3.82% and 14.34% for the total pump.

In order to effectively improve hydraulic performance of centrifugal pump on off-conditions, the hydraulic design of inlet guide vane (IGV) was completed by adopting two dimensional theory in-house code based on one kind of IS series of centrifugal pump, which can achieve pre-whirl regulation of centrifugal pump. During design process the trailing edge of vane is assumed as equal velocity moment condition, and the distribution of vane setting angle along meridional streamline is also given as a quartic function firstly, the camber line is then drawn by point-by-point integration method and thickened at both sides along circumferential direction. With local vortex dynamics diagnosis theory, the optimal improvement of vane space shape can be finished by adjusting the design parameters of vane setting angle distribution coefficient ap. The full flow passage numerical simulations of centrifugal pump with IGV device are completed to analyze the influence of pre-whirl regulation on hydraulic performance of centrifugal pump under various pre-whirl angles. The results show that the pre-whirl regulation can improve the hydraulic performance of centrifugal pump on off-conditions. Under the positive pre-whirl regulation conditions, the best efficient point shift to small flow rate zone, and under the negative pre-whirl regulation conditions it moves to large flow rate zone. Compared with the pump without IGV device at the same flow rate condition of 0.8Q (Q the design flow rate), the hydraulic efficiency of centrifugal pump with IGV device improves obviously and reaches up to 1.43%. Meanwhile compared with that installed with the straight vanes designed based on the traditional theory, the inner flow field of centrifugal pump with the designed vanes improves and the overall hydraulic efficiency of centrifugal pump is somewhat increased.

The role played by fluid forces in determining the rotordynamic stability of a centrifugal pump is gaining increasing attention. The present research investigates the contributions to the rotordynamic forces from the discharge-to-suction leakage flows between the front shroud of the rotating impeller and the stationary pump casing. In particular, the dependency of the rotordynamic characteristics of leakage flows on the swirl at the inlet to the leakage path was examined. An inlet guide vane was designed for the experiment so that swirl could be introduced at the leakage flow inlet. The data demonstrates substantial rotordynamic effects and a destabilizing tangential force for small positive whirl ratios; this force decreased with increasing flow rate. The effect of swirl on the rotordynamic forces was found to be destabilizing.

Aero-fuel centrifugal pumps are important power plants in aero-engines. Unlike most of the existing centrifugal pumps, a combination impeller is integrated with the pump to improve performance. First, the critical geometrical parameters of the combination impeller and volute are given. Then, the effects of the combination impeller on the flow characteristics of the impeller and volute are clarified by comparing simulation results with that of the conventional impeller, where the effectiveness of the selected numerical method is validated by an acceptable agreement between simulation and experiment. Finally, the experiment is set to test the external performance of the studied pump. A significant feature of this study is that the flow characteristics are significantly ameliorated by reducing the flow losses that emerged in the impeller inlet, impeller outlet, and volute tongue. Correspondingly, the head and efficiency of a combination impeller are higher with comparison to a conventional impeller. Consequently, it is a promising approach in ameliorating the flow field and improving external performance by applying a combination impeller to an aero-fuel centrifugal pump.

In order to study the flow velocity, static pressure and turbulent kinetic energy distribution of the inter-stage flow passage, the numerical calculation of the inter-stage flow passage of the multistage split centrifugal pump was carried out under the design condition. The results show that the fluid flows along the inter-stage water flow channel, and backflow and vortices are generated at the guide vanes at the end of the bridge, which causes certain energy loss. In this paper, based on the original design, three different improvement schemes are proposed by changing the shape and position of the guide vane for the backflow and vortex generated near the guide vanes. The improved scheme is numerically simulated, and the energy loss values of the four different flow passages are calculated by integration. After comparison and analysis, the second scheme is determined as the best scheme, and the accuracy of simulation is verified by experiments.

In order to research the influence laws of the main geometrical parameters of auxiliary impeller and different operation conditions on the centrifugal pump with an auxiliary impeller, which aimed to act as dynamic seal, the orthogonal experiment was designed with four factors and three values. The factors respectively are auxiliary impeller axial clearance, blade width, outlet diameter and blade number. With simulation by Fluent, major and minor factors were investigated which influence the performance of the centrifugal pump with an auxiliary impeller. The cases with optimization sealing pressure value and optimization efficiency were obtained and it was proved by the experimental results. Then, two optimization cases and the original case were simulated and analyzed. The research results show that the major factor of auxiliary impellers for the pump efficiency is the outlet diameter. For sealing pressure head of auxiliary impellers, the major factor is the outlet diameter of auxiliary impeller and the axial clearance and blade number of the auxiliary impeller are secondary important factors. For the optimization of centrifugal pumps with an auxiliary impeller, numerical orthogonal tests can replace actual orthogonal tests.

This paper presents the optimization of vibrations of centrifugal pump considering fluid-structure interaction (FSI). A set of centrifugal pumps with various blade shapes were studied using FSI method, in order to investigate the transient vibration performance. The Kriging model, based on the results of the FSI simulations, was established to approximate the relationship between the geometrical parameters of pump impeller and the root mean square (RMS) values of the displacement response at the pump bearing block. Hence, multi-island genetic algorithm (MIGA) has been implemented to minimize the RMS value of the impeller displacement. A prototype of centrifugal pump has been manufactured and an experimental validation of the optimization results has been carried out. The comparison among results of Kriging surrogate model, FSI simulation, and experimental test showed a good consistency of the three approaches. Finally, the transient mechanical behavior of pump impeller has been investigated using FSI method based on the optimized geometry parameters of pump impeller.

To investigate the influence of entraining and separating effect of gas–liquid two-phase on self-priming performance in the flow-ejecting centrifugal pump, three different schemes of adding the baffle plate behind the guide vane were proposed. Experiments on self-priming performance for three different guide vane schemes were carried out, and numerical calculations on entraining property in the ejector and separating property in the chamber were analyzed by means of the Eulerian–Eulerian multiphase flow model. Meanwhile, the frequency domain properties of pressure pulsation and the pump performance curves were obtained to further verify the feasibility of the scheme in practical application. The results show that the simulation analysis agreed well with the test results. The area and magnitude of high velocity region and vorticities in the ejector of scheme 2 are remarkably larger than those of other schemes. Gas–liquid separation efficiency in a pump chamber also significantly improves when the baffle plate behind the guide vane is mounted at an appropriate position. Furthermore, different guide vane schemes have certain impact on the characteristics of internal and unsteady flow pulsation phenomena in model pump but are within the acceptable operation range. The head and efficiency of scheme 2 are also slightly higher than those of the prototype in the full operation range.
