Social workers’ understanding of professional values and ethics has matured considerably. During the earliest years of the profession’s history, social workers’ attention was focused primarily on cultivating a set of values upon which the mission of the profession could be based. More recently, social workers have developed comprehensive ethical standards to guide practitioners and decision-making frameworks that are useful when practitioners face difficult ethical dilemmas. Today’s social workers also have a better understanding of the relationship between their ethical decisions and potential malpractice risks.

Social workers frequently encounter circumstances involving ethical and legal issues. In many instances, relevant ethical and legal standards complement each other; however, in some circumstances, ethical and legal standards conflict. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the relationship between U.S. ethical and legal standards in social work. The author presents a conceptually based typology of 4 types of relationships between legal and ethical standards. Case examples are included. The author concludes with a decision-making framework designed to enhance social workers' constructive management of difficult decisions involving ethical and legal standards.

Social workers' understanding of ethical issues has matured significantly. This article traces the evolution of the profession's approach to the values and ethics. During its history, social work has moved through four major periods-- the morality period, the values period, the ethical theories and decision-making period, and the ethical standards and risk-management (the prevention of ethics complaints and ethics related lawsuits) is diverting social workers from in-depth exploration of core professional and personal values, ethical dilemmas, and the nature of the profession's moral mission. The author encourages the profession to recalibrate its focus on values and ethics.

Codes of ethics have been found inadequate for community psychology because of the emphasis on the relationship between the professional and individual clients rather than on the relationship with the community. Explicit value statements and guidelines for resolving dilemmas of conflicting views are often lacking. For purposes of discussion, possible revisions of the preamble and the major principles of the codes of ethics of the American and Canadian Psychological Associations are presented. Vignettes of ethical dilemmas in community psychology and an approach to decision making are also provided. Community psychologists are urged to develop more definitive guidelines.

Today ethics is embodied not only in day-to-day life, but also in the communication that surrounds it. The study of communication in professional communities makes it possible to determine the relationship between declared and practically embodied values in work. Ethical attitudes are not only postulates embedded in ethical codes, but also principles of interaction embodied in the construction of the information space and decision-making. Features of modern communications influence the way professional ethics is structured, which, in turn, affects its content and practical implementation. The communication through the Internet makes scientific work performative, filling it with symbols and labels. Increasingly, communication practices have to be carried out around indicators, and thus communication becomes a conductor of neoliberal reforms in scientific work. Therefore, the consequence of modern forms of communication is the forced utilitarianism of ethics associated with the need to compete in the “scientific market”. The article suggests possible ways to overcome the contradictions of communicative transformations of professional values.

Given their positions of public trust, regulated professions are legally required to uphold ethical standards, and ensure that professional practice protects the public. Nonetheless, there is ample evidence that professionals do not always behave ethically. One proposed solution is greater organizational surveillance; however, research from a neo-Weberian perspective encourages scepticism about such arguments. Organizations may not only fail to stop professionals from violating ethical codes, but rationalizing organizations might actively encourage such violations in the name of efficiency. This article explores the impact of organizations and rationalization on professional misconduct through a mixed-methods study of professional engineers in Ontario, Canada. Findings suggest engineers are impacted by rationalization, and that those with less decision-making authority experience pressures discouraging practice in the public interest.

Decision-making is central to the everyday practice of paramedicine. Paramedics must deliver appropriate clinical care within the boundaries of the law, clinical guidelines and evidence-based standards. They must also deliver care that is consistent with ethical standards and respectful of the expectations, preferences and beliefs of the patient. Paramedics are required to make these decisions within settings that are often disordered, uncontrolled and unpredictable, where all the relevant information and circumstances are not fully known. Decision-making in this environment is intended to provide care and treatment in the best interests of the patient. However, what should paramedics do when their intended, evidence based course of treatment is different from the patient's own wishes? More speci∼cally, how should they navigate these situations in the presence of complexities such as diminished mental capacity and end-of-life care? This article addresses these questions by exploring the relationship between healthcare ethics, health law and evidence-based practice in paramedicine.

One of the hallmarks of a profession is attention to ethical standards; therefore, the purpose of this article is to increase awareness of current ethical issues related to Rehabilitation Counselingpractice, and to identify toolsfor addressing those issues in an ethically sound manner. Examples of ethical dilemmas involving disability in a counseling relationship are presented, and a review of literature related to ethics in this area is provided. An approach to addressing potentially hidden counselor bias and its effect on ethical decision-making processes is discussed.

APA Ethical Standards for psychologists strongly caution against multiple relationships between professionals and clients to prevent exploitation; but clear guidelines are lacking. This dilemma is more common in smaller communities and this pilot study explored this issue in a small rural community using Gottlieb's (1993) decision-making model as a framework. Local practitioners (n = 25) were surveyed about their experience and factors used to make decisions regarding multiple relationships using vignettes. Majority chose to proceed with the secondary relationship citing importance of factors such as role incompatibility, clarity of termination of the professional relationship, and the availability of other professionals. Discrepancies were noted between factors rated as important and their actual influence on decisions made, which should be explored.

This study aims to analyze the effect of experience on ethical decisions and the influence of organizational ethical culture in moderating the relationship between experience and ethical decisions in tax consultants in the Sumatran Region including Lampung, Bangka Belitung, Palembang and Jambi consisting of 139 respondents. The analysis technique uses SEM WarpPLS with the help of the WarpPLS 7.0 application. The findings in this study, indicate that there is no significant effect between experience and ethical decisions and in an indirect relationship between experience and ethical decisions with organizational ethical culture as a moderating variable showing the results, organizational ethical culture can moderate the relationship with a significant influence. The research has met the requirements of the SEM-WarpPLS fit model.
