Introduction: Adaptation and the Battle of, and for, and over, and within the Public Humanities

Abstract This introduction to the special issue of Adaptation devoted to adaptation and the public humanities focuses on the ways the once-anodyne term ‘public humanities’ has become more sharply politicized and contested over the past few years. In many ways, adaptation, which generates new versions and new readings of old texts instead of cancelling, erasing, or unpublishing them, offers the possibility of transcending the conflicts in contemporary culture. But the creation and the study of adaptations offer not a retreat from the culture wars but an array of new tools for waging them more productively by reframing them in ways that lead to more open and fruitful dialogue on the subjects proposed by the essays in this issue: theatrical performances cast for the public good, the costs of performing adapted versions of oneself or of encouraging adaptation-induced tourism, the ecological implications of adaptation, and the shifting valence of adaptation when it is practiced by public figures and posthuman agents.

In the past three decades, economic competitiveness has morphed from an international concern (e.g. outcompete Japan) to a regional concern (e.g. knowledge clusters) to one where individual universities are in an “arms race” with each other for private and public funding (including licensing royalties, retaining star faculty, pursuing academic earmarking, developing technology parks and incubators, etc.). The greatest benefit that Bayh-Dole afforded universities, namely, to promote the utilization of their research for the public good, sometimes seems distant to the perceived objectives whereby universities attempt to maximize their own resources, including commercialization profits from faculty innovations that are ultimately transferred to the economy.

This editorial aims to introduce the themes and approaches covered in this special issue on education, communication, and decision-making on renewable and sustainable energy. At first, I discuss the themes and topics that have informed the creation of this special issue. Then, I provide an overview of the content of each paper that is included on the special issue. Additionally, this editorial provides a solid background on the relationships between the factors affecting decision-making on renewable energy sources as well as on the degree of influence education and communication takes part in the attitudes of the public towards renewable energy sources.

For the past two decades, specialised events on finite-state methods have been successful in presenting interesting studies on natural language processing to the public through journals and collections. The FSMNLP workshops have become well-known among researchers and are now the main forum of the Association for Computational Linguistics' (ACL) Special Interest Group on Finite-State Methods (SIGFSM). The current issue on finite-state methods and models in natural language processing was planned in 2008 in this context as a response to a call for special issue proposals. In 2010, the issue received a total of sixteen submissions, some of which were extended and updated versions of workshop papers, and others which were completely new. The final selection, consisting of only seven papers that could fit into one issue, is not fully representative, but complements the prior special issues in a nice way. The selected papers showcase a few areas where finite-state methods have less than obvious and sometimes even groundbreaking relevance to natural language processing (NLP) applications.

For the past few decades, many special collections repositories in the United States have charged licensing or use fees to those patrons who use or publish special collections materials for commercial purposes. A historical perspective on the education and training of dietetics students from the 1940s was recently presented in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics [1]. This history showed the development of training methods and practices as the profession evolved. Another recent paper in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition [2] described the need for nutrition education across disciplines in health professions, both to promote interdisciplinary collaboration, and to address the growing needs of the public for information and guidance. These papers clearly show that nutrition education has been important in the past, and will continue to be so into the future

Along with introducing the purpose and cohesion of the essays that form this special issue, we also wish to highlight the force on which all of these lofty hopes depend: educated students. Without question, the authors who wrote these essays understand and appreciate the importance of students, especially as the prepared and empowered agents of future actions that will be sustainably transformative in the conduct of their lives. In fact, students are so pervasively important to most discussions of higher education and the public good, including the UNESCO report, that they are often taken for granted in a rush to address institutional and faculty responsibilities. However, no student of any age or educational goal should ever be far from consideration. They are indeed fully present in the essays that comprise this issue of Higher Learning Research Communications.

ABSTRACTStandard mitigation treatment for adverse effects to significant cultural resources has historically been a combination of data recovery excavation along with artifact analysis, reporting, and curation, whose purpose is to move the undertaking forward. Over the past several decades, there has been increased interest and understanding of alternative, or creative, mitigation options in these situations, which may, in the end, be the best option for the resource and more meaningful to both project stakeholders and the public. This article, the first in this special issue on creative mitigation, introduces the regulatory and conceptual framework for creative mitigation and weaves themes introduced in subsequent articles in this issue.

AbstractThe key task for Christian public theology is to determine the most effective way in which theological insights can contribute to the public good within any given polity and beyond. In the past the assumption has been that this task is undertaken in a secular political environment. After examining different ways in which such an environment might be understood, this article examines the approaches of Stanley Hauerwas, Rowan Williams and Oliver O’Donovan to Christian political engagement. These approaches are characterized as separatist, pluralist and sympathetic to Christendom. Subsequently there is a shift in focus to consider how relevant these approaches are to the emerging post-secular and pluralist environment in the western world. While there is a range of approaches as to how to pursue the public good in this context, I argue that Hauerwas, Williams and O’Donovan remain relevant, contributing to the task of public theology in various ways.
