Abstract Introduction One premise of the Improved Surgical Training (IST) pilot is delivery of better quality of early years surgical training. However, the quality of the trainee-trainer relationship can positively or negatively impact trainees’ experiences of the specialty. Trust is a key determinant of the relationship, which is influenced by trainers’ level of risk aversion and trainees’ motivation. Game theory provides a framework to understand cooperation amongst rational ‘players’. This study explores how trainee-trainer relationships impact trainees’ experiences through the IST curricular reform. Methods Using a qualitative case study approach, data were obtained from interviews with core surgical trainees across Scotland. Data coding and inductive thematic analysis were undertaken. Results Forty-six trainees participated. Trainees and trainers regularly interacting in clinical activities demonstrated growing levels of trust, aided by: specialty rotations of 6 months or more duration, working at junior registrar level with structured weekly clinical activities and direct consultant supervision, individual goal-setting and regular progress check, and meaningful and timely feedback. Cooperative relationships led to individual fulfilment, growth, and trainee autonomy. Factors hindering development of trust included: temporal and/or geographical distance between trainee-trainer, poor communication and understanding of expectations and training needs, and lack of interest and enthusiasm from either party. Conclusion Cohesive trainee-trainer relationships demonstrated cooperative equilibrium; both trainees and trainers met each other’s expectations and positively impacted on trainees’ experiences. On the contrary, ‘players’ in relationships deficient in trust achieved the minimum to ensure trainee progression. Addressing factors fostering a cooperative trainee-trainer relationship positively impacts trainees’ experiences.

Education is an important thing that has become a necessity for every human being in order to achieve a better quality of life. Education cannot be separated from the educational curriculum, which is where the curriculum continues to develop following every development of society and technological advances. The curriculum is the heart of education and is dynamic in nature where the curriculum must always be updated or changed. From this curriculum reform and change, it is a challenge for teachers to continue to innovate to improve the quality of education. By using a qualitative research method a case study approach, it is hoped that it can explain the real picture that is being experienced by the teacher at SMK Ibnu Sina. which focuses on the Sharia Banking major due to changes in the adjusted curriculum because the world is being faced by COVID-19. In the era of COVID-19, the educational curriculum must be adjusted, which in the beginning learning can be face-to-face now has turned into a distance learning online learning model.

AbstractWhile scholarship suggests that improving tenure security and housing significantly reduces disaster risk at the household level within urban settings, this assertion has not been adequately tested. Tenure security can be conceived as being composed of three interrelated and overlapping forms: tenure security as determined by legal systems; de facto tenure security; and tenure security as perceived by residents. This article traces the relationship between tenure security, the quality of housing, and disaster risk on the basis of a mixed methods comparative case study of the settlements of Kawangware and Kibera in Nairobi. Although the findings suggest that owner-occupancy is associated with the structural integrity of dwellings to a greater extent than tenantship, no association was found between the length of occupancy by households and the structural integrity of the dwelling. Moreover, tenantship is not found to be closely associated with fires and flooding affecting the dwelling as extant scholarship would suggest. Formal ownership is linked with greater investment and upgrading of property with significant implications for disaster risk. Our findings highlight the complex relationship between tenure security and disaster risk in urban informal settlements and provide impetus for further investigation.

Abstract Introduction Differential attainment (DA), according to the General Medical Council (GMC), is the gap between attainment levels in different groups. Attainment measures should cover aspects that include academic performance and career progression. Two such areas in surgical training are the MRCS examinations and ARCPs, both of which are required for progression in a career in surgery. Our aim was to investigation whether socio-economic background was a significant factor for progression in surgical training. Method Data from the GMC for Core Surgical Trainees (CSTs) taking the MRCS examination between 2016 and 2019 and CST ARCP outcomes between 2017 and 2019 were obtained. Socio-economic background was assessed using the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD). ARCP and MRCS outcomes were assessed against IMD. Results Trainees from IMD Q1&2 (most deprived) had a significantly higher (p < 0.01) mean number of attempts (1.86) to pass MRCS examinations than trainees from IMD Q4&5 (least deprived) (1.54). IMD Q1&2 were significantly more likely to obtain unsatisfactory outcomes (24.4%) than trainees from IMD Q4&5 (14.2%) (p < 0.05). Conclusions There is clear evidence that differential attainment exists within Core Surgical Training. The reasons for this are likely to be complex and more work is needed to further investigate the relationship.

Public governance and income inequality relationship is complex and debatable. This paper examines the extent to which the quality of local governance affects inequality in Vietnam spanning the 2006–2016 period. I apply a generalized method of moments (GMM) estimators to a dynamic panel data extracted from the Vietnam’s provincial competitiveness index and the Vietnam household living standard surveys. The findings are that there is a positive inequality — corruption link but no statistically significant correlation coefficient between the overall level of governance and income disparity. The study, therefore, suggests that the Vietnamese Government at all levels should consider both more effective legal practices and economic low-cost solutions to mitigate corruption.

This study aimed to determine the reality of education and religious insight of madrasah teachers as well as the relationship between education and religious insights with madrasah teachers’ work motivation in Serang District, Banten Province. The method used is descriptive method with case study approach and quantitative data analysis. The research sites were at Sultan Agung Madrasah Tirtayasa, Nurul Huda Madrasah Baros and Raudhatul Ulum Madrasah Anyer. The respondents were 50 councilors in each madrasah. Data collection techniques used in the study were questionnaires, observations, and interviews. Based on the data analysis using statistical approaches and the development of a linear regression formula and multiple regression, correlation values are quite high among the variables of educational insights (X1) with the variables of madrasah teachers’ work motivation (Y); and between variables of religious insight (X2) with the madrasah teachers’ work motivation (Y); as well as between the variables of religious and education insight (X1 and X2) with the variables of madrasah teachers’ work motivation (Y).

<div class="page" title="Page 1"><div class="layoutArea"><div class="column"><p>This study focuses on deliberative democracy practices in Caturtunggal village, specifically in the sub-village (<em>dusun</em>) of Seturan, Karangwuni, and Ambarukmo. The study assesses the quality of deliberation in these dusun by applying the three out of  five indicators of deliberative democracy theory by Fishkin (2009), namely information, subtantantive balance, and equal consideration. This study deploys qualitative descriptive method and case-study approach with in-depth interview as the main data gathering technique. This deliberation has put Village Consultative Board (BPD) period of 2013-2019 as a mediator and to consider arguments and deliberative results. Based on the indicators which proposed by Fishkin, Seturan and Ambarukmo are categorized for having semi-ideal deliberation, meanwhile Karangwuni is categorized as not ideal. The study also finds elite capture practices in Seturan and Karangwuni, but they do not impact significantly. </p></div></div></div>


When SMEs are part of global value chain, the flows of information in cross-border buyer-supplier relationships which emerge from inward-outward internationalisation connections should be addressed. This study therefore investigates the learning processes of internationalising small and medium enterprises that engage in inward and outward internationalisation. Hence, this study adopts a qualitative case study approach based on ten cases of the internationalising SMEs in Malaysia. Semi-structured interviews with the Managing Directors of the selected SMEs were conducted over a two-year period. Additionally, participant observations were conducted by attending the meetings related to import-export activities and documentations were gathered for data triangulation Findings of this study highlights that the relationship with key foreign suppliers empowered case firms to connect inward to outward internationalisation through collaborative knowledge sharing. The distribution of knowledge through tacit-tacit and tacit-explicit knowledge sharing underpinned by formal planning was a prerequisite for inward-outward internationalisation connections to be established.

This study aims to analyze and understand the training and development program carried out by SMP YAMIS Jakarta in improving the quality of its human resources. This research uses a qualitative case study approach. The data collection technique is done through interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis is done through data presentation, data reduction, and concluding. The results showed that the training and development program carried out by SMP YAMIS Jakarta in improving the quality of its human resources was through the Subject Teacher Consultation (MGMP) activities which were carried out periodically by the existing schedule, involving teachers in seminars on learning methods that creative, innovative and fun, holding independent training in schools by inviting resource persons who are experts in the field, and programmed supervision carried out by school principals to employees regarding the achievement of planned educational goals.

The phenomenon of the poor quality of parental care for children with disabilities makes resilience one of the psychological capital that contributes to improving the quality of care. This study describes how through a muhasabah intervention in Blimbingrejo Village, Nalumsari District, Jepara Regency. The purpose of this study was to provide information for parents of children with special needs about muhasabah interventions in developing the resilience abilities of parents when carrying out their care. The urgency of this research is to reduce parenting stress experienced by parents because of the developmental barriers of their children. This research is qualitative with a case study approach through in-depth interviews and observation techniques. The study results explain that the condition of children with special needs is often a stressor for their parents. However, parents can live with complete steadfastness as a form of their resilience. The pattern of resilience formed is supported mainly by thinking about what they are trying to do. There are indications of the meaning of resilience factors in the practice of muhasabah in the form of the ability to regulate emotions, develop optimism and empathy, control impulses and causal analysis, good self-efficacy and take wisdom as an indication of aspects of the reaching out process. The results of this study are helpful information in developing the concept and practice of caring for children with special needs.
