Abstract The impact of the adoption of the new biosynthetic growth hormone (GH) WHO International Reference Preparation (IRP 88/624), and the recommendation to report results in μg/L instead of mU/L, is described. Conversion factors were determined by comparing both the linear and nonlinear relations of the GH values. The Pharmacia polyclonal IRMA (p-IRMA) and the DELFIA® monoclonal time-resolved immunofluorometric assay (trIFMA) with kit calibrators calibrated either against the pituitary-derived WHO IRP 80/505 or the new 88/624 were evaluated. Conversion factors of 4.17 mU/L = 1 μg/L for the p-IRMA and 4.31 mU/L = 1 μg/L for the trIFMA were necessary. Different cross-reactivity patterns for the deaminated and dimer 22-kDa, 20-kDa, and 17-kDa GH isoforms were found. Expected GH recovery was similar when the measured values were adjusted according to the results of the cross-reactivity study.

Abstract Objective.—To examine the impact of a new international reference preparation for serum proteins on the among-manufacturer variance in the College of American Pathologists Surveys. Data Source.—The results of the Surveys for the years 1993–1998, supplied by the College of American Pathologists. Data Extraction and Synthesis.—Mean values for manufacturers' assays were compared for each protein in the quality control samples. Results were separated by the reported reference material from which values for calibrators had been transferred. Standard statistical parameters (means, standard deviations, and coefficients of variation) were calculated from the reported means. Conclusions.—Among-manufacturer coefficients of variation have dropped significantly for most serum proteins since the introduction of the new reference material. Possible reasons for continued differences are discussed.

AbstractThe severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has proven a challenge to healthcare systems since its first appearance in late 2019. The global spread and devastating effects of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on patients have resulted in countless studies on risk factors and disease progression. Overweight and obesity emerged as one of the major risk factors for developing severe COVID-19. Here we review the biology of coronavirus infections in relation to obesity. In particular, we review literature about the impact of adiposity-related systemic inflammation on the COVID-19 disease severity, involving cytokine, chemokine, leptin, and growth hormone signaling, and we discuss the involvement of hyperactivation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). Due to the sheer number of publications on COVID-19, we cannot be completed, and therefore, we apologize for all the publications that we do not cite.

This paper experimentally addresses the impact of surface roughness on losses and secondary flow in a Turbine Rear Structure (TRS). Experiments were performed in the Chalmers LPT-OGV facility, at an engine representative Reynolds number with a realistic shrouded rotating low-pressure turbine (LPT). Outlet Guide Vanes (OGV) were manufactured to achieve three different surface roughnesses tested at two Reynolds numbers, Re = 235000 and Re = 465000. The experiments were performed at on-design inlet swirl conditions. The inlet and outlet flow of the TRS were measured in 2D planes with a 5-hole probe and 7-hole probe accordingly. The static pressure distributions on the OGVs were measured and boundary layer studies were performed at the OGV midspan on the suction side with a time-resolved total pressure probe. Turbulence decay was measured within the TRS with a single hot-wire. The results showed a surprisingly significant increase in the losses for the high level of surface roughness (25–30 Ra) of the OGVs and Re = 465000. The increased losses were primary revealed as a result of the flow separation on the OGV suction side near the hub. The loss increase was seen but was less substantial for the intermediate roughness case (4–8 Ra). Experimental results presented in this work provide support for the further development of more advanced TRS and data for the validation of new CFD prediction methods for TRS.

Purpose. Excess growth hormone secretion in adults results in acromegaly, a condition in which multiple physical changes occur including bony and soft tissue overgrowth. Over time these changes can markedly alter a person’s appearance. The aim of this study was to compare body image disturbance in patients with acromegaly to those with nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas (NFAs) and controls and assess the impact of obesity in these groups.Methods. A cross-sectional survey including quality of life, body image disturbance, anxiety and depression measures, growth hormone, and BMI measurement was carried out.Results. The groups did not differ with respect to body image disturbance. However separate analysis of obese participants demonstrated relationships between mood scales, body image disturbance, and pain issues, particularly for acromegaly patients.Conclusions. While the primary hypothesis that acromegaly might be associated with body image disturbance was not borne out, we have shown that obesity together with acromegaly and NFA can be associated with body image issues, suggesting that BMI rather than primary diagnosis might better indicate whether patients might experience body image disturbance problems.
