Abstract Background Proper management of increasing solid waste is a major challenge for Dhaka city. Hence, the consequences on health are numerous and depend on the nature of the waste, individuals exposed, duration of exposure and availability of interventions for those exposed. This study seeks to identify the potential health risk associated with contamination from STSs and landfills in Dhaka city. Methods This study has adopted a multi-method approach that includes qualitative data collection and analysis of secondary spatial data. Thematic analysis was performed for analysing the qualitative data and. Spatial data were collected from the Survey of Bangladesh and analysed to show the spatial distribution of 68 STSs out of 81 STSs in Dhaka City. Results Qualitative study suggests that the leachate migration from the landfill and STSs make the surrounding environment worse and causes health sufferings to the people living near the STS or landfill along with the people directly working. Furthermore, findings from the spatial data reveal that, 12 STSs within 50-100 meters and 54 STSs within 100 meters radius of an education institute and round 75 STSs are also located within 100 meters radius of the health facilities. Numerous settlements and natural features are also located within 500 meters of buffer zone from the both landfills. Flies and mosquitoes are breeding at a greater pace in and around the landfills where high quantities of solid waste are being dumped. Again, waterlogging is very common due to the dumping of waste which in turn is causing the spread of dengue and other water borne diseases in the surrounding area. Conclusions Poor management and incautious allocation of the STSs and landfills have adverse effects on the people's health residing nearby. Managing waste in the landfill and STS with a proper manner, and engaging more manpower with adequate safety equipment could be a great help to reduce the health sufferings of the people living nearby. Key messages Improper solid waste management practice effects on the health of people residing near the STSs and landfills. To manage the waste of the STSs and landfills in an efficient way and not cause daily nuisance to the nearby residents.

The study was conducted to investigate the present solid waste management practice in Mymensingh municipal area especially in Ward 04 and 06. Huge solid wastes are generated every day in these wards but the waste management is not properly done because of their irregular waste management activities or unconsciousness. Maximum respondents discharged 1kg solid waste from their households per day and the respondents were 64%. Other 18% household discharged 0.5 kg and another 18% discharged 2 kg solid waste from their house per day. A majority percent of people dumps the produced solid waste in their living surroundings which produce various hazards in human health and environmental problems. This improper waste management can be managed by the regularity of management work, building awareness of the people and improving waste treatment. The municipality and other related NGOs should work together to solve these issues. It was revealed from the study that due to lack of people knowledge about solid waste management, lack of adequate budget for waste management, lack of available transport vehicles for waste management, lack of proper solid waste treatment plant etc. The total solid waste management system required following the recommendation which include proper planning, creating awareness, developing infrastructure, providing logistic support and finally involving NGOs, CBOs, public in this process. The purpose of this article is to study the factors that affect the participation in management of community waste. Studying the factors affecting community participation in waste management might become a way to find how to manage wastes in the community of the Khaerai Sub-district, Katumban District, Samutsakorn Province of Thailand. This research is designed as a mixed research, that is, both qualitative and quantitative. The tools used to collect quantitative and qualitative data were as follows: 1) The tool used in quantitative collection is a questionnaire divided into 4 sections as follows. Part 1: Analysis of public data on the Khaerai Sub-district Administration Organization. Part 2: Analysis of knowledge on waste management in the community of Khaerai Sub-district. Part 3: Analysis of the factors affecting people’s participation in waste management in the sub-district in question. Part 4: Analysis of household solid waste management in Khaerai Sub-district. 2) Tools used for collection of qualitative data included observations and in-depth interviews on the issues related to community’s involvement in waste management. Our research results demonstrate that most of the people in the sub-district in question are involved in reducing the volume of household waste. They always participate in separation of waste types before disposing them. The study on the solid waste management system of Khaerai Sub-district Administration Organization found that the Administration applies comprehensive community waste management, integrated with waste management. To manage the garbage at its source, dividing the garbage into four categories is used (thus, there are four cans). This helps collecting solid waste more efficiently and thus reduce the contamination of that waste that potentially can be reused. The focus should be maintained on waste sorting and also on organization of the related projects and activities. Additional measures may include providing a new waste facility for future solid waste and also promoting more ways to get rid of waste at its source. Using the participatory principles in waste management gives people more freedom in options’ selection, and this, in its turn, may boost the efficiency of waste collection and waste management overall.

This paper presents an overview of the current solid waste management practices in Gashua town and provides a brief discussion on future challenges. Gashua town the headquarters of Bade Local Government Area since 1949. Since then the population has mainly due to the influx of people and its strategic location along the axial route to significant towns in the state. Wastes are generated mainly from residential, commercial and institutional land uses. Waste collection sites are strategically situated as identified by the agency and designated as high waste generating points, metal waste bins and constructed waste bunkers. The contents of these bins are finally disposed of at a location 6kilometres away from the generating points. Spatial data on waste distribution was collected using a global positioning system (GPS). The data was manipulated and processed using a Geographic information system (GIS) to produce the waste distribution map. Findings revealed that the existing solid waste management system is inefficient as the present practice relies on monthly collection and disposal of waste using an open dumpsite.

This study aimed to examine the impact of poor solid waste management on student’s health care at Gondar University of “Tewodros” campus. The study used a mixed-method approach. To recruit sample respondents', both probability and non-probability sampling methods have been employed. In the meantime, the study revealed the sources of solid waste, it is understood that the poorly collected and managed solid wastes of the study area due to the lack of necessary materials and facilities of waste collection, lack of laborers engaged in street sweeping and daily removal of solid waste is now becoming the major causes of environmental problems such as surface and groundwater pollution problems. Besides, the student’s health office personnel in the interview approached the general health status of the students on the campus during this year. Accordingly, dysentery, common cold, and typhoid are the most frequently appear disease on the Tewodros campus. Therefore, there should be a “students committee “at the campus level to control illegal dumping and to develop practice and habits of poor waste handling and disposal in the community, and there must be apparent regulation and policy frameworks that prohibit poor waste management.

Purpose Municipal solid waste (MSW) consists mainly of several recyclable materials such as paper and cardboard. Inside the educational institutes, especially universities, MSW is generated from several facilities including offices and cafeterias. Without an effective management program, solid waste can have detrimental impacts on the environment. This paper aims to assess the solid waste management practices followed at the main campus of Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University (IAU), Dammam – Saudi Arabia. Design/methodology/approach The MSW samples were collected from different sources inside the IAU campus such as the college buildings (such as the teaching rooms and staff offices), the administrative buildings and services buildings (e.g. the main library, the photocopying center, the restaurant and cafeteria) at least one time per week during a full academic term (January–May) of the academic year 2017–2018. The collected MSW samples were segregated into seven categories, and the net amount of each category and the overall weight of the MSW were determined once every week. The MSW samples were characterized for physical and chemical properties including moisture, carbon and ash contents. Food product waste (FPW) of the main university restaurant was studied separately. Findings Data on the composition of MSW samples revealed that 80% of wastes were recyclable, 19% as compostable materials, while only 1% of the materials were a non-recyclable waste. More than 73% of the recyclable materials include paper and plastic warranting dire need of an effective solid waste management program. The highest value of FPW was recorded for the breakfast meal. Originality/value Most of the waste generated from the university campus was recyclable type that needs to be handled carefully to avoid its mixing with other types of the waste stream. Waste characterization is an important tool that helps in understanding the amount and pattern of waste generation. It can be used as a decision-making tool for implementing sustainable waste management programs for universities.

Organic waste composting is an important waste management practice that can reduce the volume of municipal solid waste and increase crop productivity. A study was carried out in Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur in order to develop understanding of different methods of composting for sustainable solid waste management practices. Solid waste was collected randomly from 50 households in the area and segregated manually. The biodegradable waste was composted through pile (aerobic), aerobic bin, anaerobic (pit) and vermicomposting process. The physico-chemical and microbial analysis of composts were carried out in laboratory whereas significance of composts on crop productivity was tested in the study area. The study showed that 81.4% of the waste generated was biodegradable. The physico-chemical and microbial analyses of the compost samples showed pH range of 7.6 to 8.2 and moisture content of 54.5% to 69.5% for different composts. The maximum temperature (62°C) was observed in aerobic (pile) composting. The nutrient analysis (oganic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and C: N ratio) of different composts showed that vermicompost was the most among all the composts. The total bacterial and fungal count varied from 3.91 x 104 to 8.05 x 106 cfu/g and 1.30 x 103 to 3.25 x 104 cfu/g respectively. The vermicompost was found rich in microbial population too. The application of vermicompost at 6.25 mt/ha in the study area resulted in increasing in height, diameter and yield of cauliflower by 15.62%, 37.58% and 38.95% respectively over farm yard manure. The height, diameter and yield of cauliflower grown in different composts was found to be significantly different (P<0.05). Environmental Management Measure (EMM) model will be a well-designed approach for sustainable and effective solid waste management in Dhaka city. Environmental Management Measure (EMM) model has three instruments such as economic, regulatory and suasive which proposed in this paper. This paper discusses the situation of solid waste in Dhaka city as well as it offers environmental policy recommendations to concerned authorities including effective instruments to minimize the polluting behavior of individuals and industries and to recover the cost of pollution in the city. To improve solid waste management in Dhaka city, a combination of economic, regulatory and suasive instrument are recommended. The findings of the study will be helpful for policy maker, planner, implementer and other stakeholders towards adopting more effective strategy for management of solid waste in Dhaka city. Solid waste management is considered a pressing global issue calling for an immediate response from the government and its people. The Philippines has a continuously rising amount of waste and is expected to further increase in the succeeding years. As reviewed, associated problems with solid waste management in the country include an increasing amount of solid waste, weak law implementation, scarcity of sanitary landfills, and improper disposal. The ultimate solution existing in the country is the RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 which highlights the practices of segregation, proper disposal, and waste diversion. The importance of envisioning a trash-free Philippines and encouraging people’s participation and awareness is also emphasized. Another possible solution to solid waste management is valorization which can also address other environmental problems such as the depletion of natural resources. These solutions enumerated will only be possible with the presence of good governance, active participation of the people of the country, and the cooperation of all constituents and agencies in the Philippines.
