Time-out is a consequence-based strategy that includes altering a child’s environment such that he or she has relatively less contact with reinforcement, contingent upon a target behavior. Time-out may be considered a type of negative punishment procedure because it includes the removal of reinforcing stimuli, resulting in a decrease in the future frequency of a target behavior. This chapter describes time-out and several notable variations of time-out that range along a continuum of intrusiveness. In addition, procedural elements commonly incorporated within time-out are briefly described, followed by additional considerations when using time-out in school settings.

Traditionally, in UK-based surgical training, the majority of trainees spend a period of time out of clinical training undertaking research, usually leading to the award of a postgraduate degree or thesis (MD or PhD). The intention of this was to supplement clinical with academic training that developed skills such as critical appraisal, independent working and systematic thinking to enrich future surgical practice. The opportunity for academic activity is a significant factor in choosing a surgical career for many trainees.

This chapter sketches some of the most important factors that led to the formation of the Dave Brubeck Quartet and its rise to fame in the 1950s. Brubeck’s interest in polyrhythms is traced back to his formative years in the 1930s and 1940s, including his work with two predecessors of the Quartet, the Dave Brubeck Octet and the Dave Brubeck Trio. After its formation in 1951, the Dave Brubeck Quartet achieved popular acclaim and signed a multiyear contract with Columbia Records in 1954. Shortly thereafter, Brubeck appeared on the cover of Time magazine. Around the same time, he recorded his first studio album for Columbia, Brubeck Time, whose title was purely a promotional tactic. The experimental meter signatures of Time Out were still five years in the future.

ABSTRACTA month into his viceroyalty, Lord Mountbatten took time out from sounding Indian political opinion about independence to discuss the future security of British residents with his provincial governors. By this stage, the concerns stemmed from fears of a general breakdown in law and order and Hindu–Muslim conflict rather than nationalist assault. Detailed plans were developed for a sea-borne evacuation. In the event, the only Britons who were evacuated were those airlifted from Srinagar in November 1947 as they were in the path of an invasion of the disputed Kashmir territory by Pakhtun tribesmen from Pakistan. Despite numerous articles on the British departure from India and the aftermath of Partition, little has been written about either the airlift or the broader strategic planning for European evacuation. The paper will focus on this neglected corner of the history of the transfer of power. It argues that while anti-British sentiment declined from a peak around the time of the Indian National Army trials, of 1945–6, the memories of the wartime chaotic flight from Burma and Malaya and the irreparable damage this had done to British prestige in Asia coloured the safety first approach adopted in 1947.

Those countries training school children in the art of invention may well be the future leaders in the technological race. Invention is a specific talent within the larger domain of creativity, like other forms of creativity; it can be enhanced and developed through training. The key is the identification of inventive ability. Since inventors do not thrive in standard school settings, ignoring the development of the ability may mean that many potential inventions are lost. This study outlines a method of identifying those characteristics most important to invention.
