This chapter describes the third session of treatment, wherein families begin to identify specific problems on which they’d like to work. Using their initial treatment skills (praise, emotion monitoring, and self-soothing), they work together to identify shared goals to achieve and to prioritize them. The chapter describes strategies for teaching families to use functional analysis to understand their target problems, along with steps for practicing family problem solving in session. Scaffolding and making changes gradually is emphasized.

AbstractFunctional analysis is used to identify potential reinforcers by generating hypotheses about possible functions of a behaviour. Current methods of functional analysis emphasise observations of events, especially consequences, that occur in the immediate environment of the behaviour. While these methods are well suited for assessing behaviour that is reinforced frequently, they are less appropriate for assessing behaviour that is reinforced only intermittently. A new method for conducting functional analysis is presented that is designed to assess intermittently reinforced behaviour. The new method is illustrated using data that were gathered from an extension of a standard problem-solving format. Data are interpreted using the principle of revealed preference that arose from behavioural economics. The revealed preference method is illustrated using information provided by a client with a dependent personality disorder.

Introduction. Listeria monocytogenes is the third most frequent cause of bacterial meningitis in adults. It commonly affects persons with defective cell-mediated immunity or advanced age, and only a few patients with no underlying predisposition have been reported. Case report. We presented an previously healthy, 18-year-old man with typical clinical features of meningitis. On the account of earlier treatment with ceftriaxone and cerebrospinal fluid finding, an assumption of partially treated bacterial meningitis was made. The initial treatment with vancomycin and ceftriaxone, substituted on day 4 with meropenem, did not produce any clinical effect. On day 6 Listeria monocytogenes was isolated and, even as late as that, the administration of ampicillin was followed by complete recovery of the patient. Conclusion. In younger, immunocompetent individuals, in spite of the existent diagnostic and therapeutic problems, the subacute course of Listeria monocytogenes meningitis provides enough time for appropriate treatment and favorable disease outcome.

Although there is no standardization of the notion of competence and for the instruments used in its evaluation, generic competences are associated with employability, and understood as a composition of cognitive and practical abilities, behavioral and social skills, gathering individual characteristics and qualities required for activities of different professions. Education promotes the development of specific competences for the exercise of certain occupations, in addition to opportunities for increasing generic competences, which are also required in the labor market. This study targets to evaluate self-perception of the valuation of generic competences acquired in undergraduate students from nocturnal courses of Brazilian private university, according to area of knowledge and condition of being or not inserted in the labor market. 1,001 of these students were evaluated in the third year of their graduation, using the Generic Competences Scale. The highest value in the global sample was attributed to Responsibility at work, followed by Ethical commitment and, thirdly, by Capacity to learn. At the other end, of lesser value, were Capacity for organization and planning, Ability to manage information and Problem solving. These results were compared with data from other studies, in Latin America and Europe.
