This essay explores the nature of religious language and uses of conceptual metaphors in an important branch of medieval Bengali Hinduism known as the Vaiṣṇava Sahajiyā traditions which practiced a form of esoteric tantric yoga involving a series of external rituals, internalized visualizations, a special mystical language, and a rejection of the norms of Hindu caste and ritual purity. Developing after the time of the great Bengali devotional leader Kṛṣṇa Caitanya, they also incorporated emotional and devotional practices known as bhakti (“devotion”) which enriched their religious practices, language, and uses of conceptual metaphors. The essay considers how using several approaches to studying conceptual metaphors can help to better understand the process and dynamics of these traditions, how the usage of the vernacular language of Bengali influenced their religious language and metaphors, and how the historical and cultural contexts of deltaic Bengal influenced their beliefs, practices, and textual expressions.

It has long been recognized that much of the richness of Muslim women's ritual lives has been found outside of both the mosque and the “five pillars of Islam,” in a wide set of devotional practices that have met with varying degrees of affirmation and censure from male religious scholars. This recognition has given rise to a valuable literature on such practices as shrine visitation, spirit-possession rituals, and Twelver Shiʿi women's domestic ceremonies. The prevalence of such noncanonical rituals in Muslim women's lives, although waning in many parts of the contemporary world, raises questions about the relationship between women's religious practices and the constitution of Islamic orthodoxies. Have women, often given lesser access to mosque-based and canonical rituals, historically resorted to autonomous and rewarding religious practices that are, nevertheless, fated to be marginalized in the male-dominated construction of Islamic normativity—a normativity that women may ultimately internalize and master only at great cost to their religious lives?

Abstract: This paper resumes the series related to metaphors in fairy tales started by HERRERO in 2005 (cf. HERRERO, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008). In this case, the study is based on how the conceptual metaphors LIFE IS A JOURNEY and THE DIVIDED-SELF may explain the structure and the basic meaning of more than twenty popular tales, which in turn accounts for some of the uncanny of tales.The tales, which are representative of various cultures, were compiled by the British author Andrew Lang (1844-1912), and have been downloaded from the Project Gutenberg online library. Our research also casts some light on the fact that tales are akin in varying socio-cultural contexts: their solid experiential grounding may not only have contributed to a uniform plot, but also to an easier transmission of the stories in diverse, remote settings.Resumen: Este artículo continúa la serie relacionada con las metáforas en los cuentos tradicionales comenzada por HERRERO en 2005 (véase HERRERO, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008). En este caso el estudio se centra en cómo a través de las metáforas conceptuales LIFE IS A JOURNEY y THE DIVIDED-SELF se puede explicar la estructura y el significado de más de veinte cuentos populares, lo que a su vez da cuenta de parte de “lo maravilloso” que se da en ellos.Los cuentos, representativos de varias culturas, fueron recopilados por el autor británico Andrew Lang (1844-1912) y han sido extraídos del Proyecto Gutenberg. Nuestra investigación apoya además la idea de que los cuentos son similares en contextos socioculturales diferentes: el hecho de que estén firmemente basados en la experiencia puede haber contribuido tanto a que sus argumentos sean parecidos como a que se hayan transmitido fácilmente en entornos lejanos y diversos.

Employing a narrative comprehension task procedure, this study tests the hypothesis that engagement in Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava religious practices, which are aimed at cultivating a personal relationship with the Hindu deity Kṛṣṇa, predict increased implicit attribution of anthropomorphic properties to him. Contrary to our hypothesis, multiple regression analyses of data from 184 native Krishna devotees in West Bengal, India, indicated that increased engagement in these practices loaded as a tertiary predictor after education and age, such that increased practice predicted a decrease in implicit anthropomorphic reasoning about Kṛṣṇa (ß = 0.16, p < 0.03). Based on these and additional analyses of the data, we theorize that these results may be due to the tradition’s emphasis on presenting Kṛṣṇa’s non-anthropomorphic dimensions to neophyte practitioners and the non-Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava public. One implication of these results is that religious cultures and engagement in religious practices have the potential to significantly affect a human cognitive tendency to implicitly attribute anthropomorphic properties to divine beings. This may result from developing alternative knowledge from which to reason about a deity by engaging in religious practices and beliefs shaped by particular theological, historical, and cultural factors.

It has been determined that understanding everyday life as a socially determined sphere of religious life makes it possible to explore the religious practices of the Orthodox believer, on the one hand, as a component of social relationships and a way of incorporating into religious relations, on the other, as a means of objectifying religious experience. Within the framework of various scientific areas, communication is explored as a way to transfer information in interpersonal, group and social interaction. Communication is considered as a way of being of everyday life, a universal form of sociality, reproduced in intersubjective interaction. The everyday relations of Orthodox believers are characterized by common linguistic meanings and processes of interpretation. The identification of religious individuals and communities takes place through communication. Daily life is the basis of the communication of believers, the religious language is the main factor in the nature of everyday life level. The influence on the development of religious relations of the newest means of communication, including Internet forums, providing the opportunity for communion of the laity, clergy, monastics, believers of other faiths and religions is shown.

Asian countries have a culture that is diametrically opposite to European Culture. In India, China, Thailand, etc., mothers are more attached to their children than husbands. There are certain religious practices that amount to human rights violations. Chinese children are deprived of enjoyment to the fullest. Trafficking, disparities, problems in Tibet, etc. are causing serious threats to the lives of children in China. This chapter analyses human violation against children in some of the Asian countries. It is not easy to cover all the countries, so some countries that have representative character are included for a detailed study. This chapter analyses various cultural contexts that aggregate child victimization and also suggests measures to stop it.


This history of Hindu religious practices examines traditions of asceticism, yoga, and devotion (bhakti), including dance and music, developed in Hinduism over a long period of time, placing the theme of practice within a broader trajectory of cultural history. Some of these practices, notably those denoted by the term yoga, are orientated towards salvation from the cycle of reincarnation and go back several thousand years, borne witness to in ancient texts called Upaniṣads, as well as in other traditions, notably early Buddhism and Jainism. Practices of meditation are also linked to asceticism (tapas) and its institutional articulation in renunciation (saṃnyāsa). There are devotional practices that might involve ritual, making an offering to a deity and receiving a blessing, dancing, or visualization of the master (guru) and a range of disciplines from ascetic fasting to taking a vow (vrata) for a deity in return for a favour. This whole range of meditative and devotional practices that have developed in the history of Hinduism are represented in this book.

A combination of the two process-oriented approaches to studying profes-sional translation online: (i) verbal reporting, better known as TAP (think-aloud protocols), and (ii) Translog, a program used for logging keyboard activity, yields interesting data about what goes on in the translator ’s mind during a translation task. Assuming that our interpretation of metaphorical expressions depend upon conceptual metaphors, examples selected from the online data of two experienced professional Norwegian translators are used to show how the translation of metaphorical concepts are handled. Possible ways of using the above-mentioned online data qualitatively to test the hypothesis according to which translation is more than an interlinguistic comparison, requiring the mobilisation of cognitive complements in the reformulation phase, are also suggested.
