The Identification of Preexilic Material in the Pentateuch

It is the aim of this chapter to indicate the convergence of the linguistic data and the sociocultural background for many segments in the narratives of the patriarchs and the Exodus, noting the convergence of the cultural hybridity of these narratives that are sometimes close to the Ugaritic epic, and their predominant oral background, as revealed by language usage. Some of the allusions to sociopolitical and geopolitical context dovetail with different periods of the Israelite/Judahite monarchy. Against these features I pointed to the congruence of the language usage of the deuteronomic/ priestly strata and their place in the royal/temple administration. This dialectic interplay of cultural/linguistic contrasts and convergences indicates four main formative stages/strata for pentateuchal literature, to begin with the oral/written, epic stage (ninth/early eighth century).

Bu çalışmada, bir ‘sürgün şair’ olarak anılan Özkan Mert’in Ülkesinden Ayrılan Bir İşçinin Türküsü ve Bir Mültecinin Mektubu şiirleri göstergebilimsel bir yaklaşımla yeniden okunmaya çalışılacaktır. Özellikle farklı imgesel yapıları ve farklı bir dil kullanımını içinde barındıran ve bir ‘dünyalı şair’ olarak da anılan Özkan Mert’in şiirlerini biçimsel ve içeriksel yapılarıyla ele almak, son zamanlarda çokça tartışılan ‘sürgün edebiyatı’ ile ilgili görüşlere de katkı sunacaktır. Şiirler çözümlenirken, yüzeysel yapıdan derin yapıya doğru ilerleyen tümdengelimci yöntem izlenecek ve en son aşamada şiirler anlamsal yapılarıyla karşılaştırılmaya çalışılacaktır.ENGLISH ABSTRACTThe Projection of Exile in Poetry: A Semiotics Approach to Özkan Mert’s poems titled Ülkesinden Ayrılan Bir İşçinin Türküsü and Bir Mültecinin Mektubu In the current study, it will be tried to reread the poems titled Ülkesinden Ayrılan Bir İşçinin Türküsü and Bir Mültecinin Mektubu of Özkan Mert, who is known as an exiled poet, with a semiotics approach. Considering the poems of Özkan Mert, who is known as an “poet of the world” and contains different imaginary structures and a different language usage, with their stylistic and contextual structure will also make contribution to the “exile literature” that is argued recently. This paper concerns a historically significant find of copper derivatives of Umayyad post-reform fulus from Gandhara, probably minted in the mid-eighth century under Turk Shahi sovereignty (c. 667–875). The coins share an unusual feature: two Brahmi aksharas on an Umayyad AE prototype, inversely oriented to a partially-corrupted Arabic legend. These base metal coins represent perhaps the only known caliphal imitative varieties issued by moneyers beyond the eastern limits of Umayyad and Abbasid sovereignty. They have the potential to inform our understanding of the complex relationship between political authority, confessional identity, and coin typology in late antiquity – particularly within early “Hindu”– “Muslim” contact zones. Moreover, they provide invaluable clues into the circulatory regimes of Umayyad coinage.

Covering the period from 709 to 871, this chapter traces the initial conversion of Afghanistan from Zoroastrianism and Buddhism to Islam. Highlighting the differential developments in four regions of Afghanistan, it discusses the very earliest history of Afghan Islam both as a religion and as a political system in the form of a caliphate.  The chapter draws on under-utilized sources, such as fourth to eighth century Bactrian documents from Tukharistan and medieval Arabic and Persian histories of Balkh, Herat and Sistan. In so doing, it offers a paradigm shift in the way early Islam is understood by arguing that it did not arrive in Afghanistan as a finished product, but instead grew out of Afghanistan’s multi-religious context. Through fusions with Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, early Abrahamic traditions, and local cult practices, the Islam that resulted was less an Arab Islam that was imported wholesale than a patchwork of various cultural practices.

Data kebahasaan sering merekam nilai budaya. Hanya saja, data kebahasaan masih belum mendapat perhatian untuk kepentingan analisis terhadap dinamikasosial masyarakat yang bersumber pada nilai-nilai budaya. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis cerita humor bahasa Jawa Ngapak yang mengandung nilai-nilai budaya dan cara budaya dikonstruksi melalui melalui bahasa humor. Objek kajian tulisan ini adalah wacana humor. Oleh karena wacana humor menggunakan media teks dan tuturan, pendekatan yang digunakan adalah linguistik-antropologi. Adapun metode yang digunakan dalam tulisan ini adalah metode penelitian kualitatif yang menghasilkan data deskriptif berupa ucapan, tulisan, atau perilaku yang diamati, dengan menggunakan tehnik simak. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa budaya sehat, ajaran agama, dan budaya berbagi terhadap sesama ditemukan dalam humor bahasa Jawa Ngapak itu. Budaya-budaya itu dikontruksi melalui bahasa Jawa Ngapak dalam suasana humor menampilkan realitas masyarakat penutur Ngapak. Ini berarti nilai-nilai budaya ditemukan dalam humor, berupa percakapan manusia maupun percakapan tokoh cerita fable, yang dikonstruksi melalui bahasa Jawa Ngapak untuk merefleksikan realitas. Linguistic data that embody cultural values have not been taken into consideration in analyzing social dynamics. The study aimed at investigating Ngapak Javanese humor story which contained cultural values, and how culture was constructed through the language of humor. Therefore, the humonrous discourses became the main object of the research. The method used in this research is a qualitative which produced descriptive data in the form of speech, written, or observed behavior, and supported with listening technique. As humorous discourses used speech and text media, the study utilized a linguistic-anthropology approach. Healthy life culture, religious teachings, and the culture of sharing were found in the Ngapak Javanese humor stories. These cultures were constructed through the language of humor by the Javanese Ngapak community. In addition, the culture constructed through the Ngapak Javanese language in a humorous atmosphere displayed the reality of the Ngapak-speaking community. This can be concluded that cultural values found in humor, in the form of human speech and fable character conversations constructed through the Ngapak Javanese language displayed the reality of social dynamics.

The article deals with the relationship between the terms «word of the year» and «neologism of the year», and the examples are the words, annually nominating as «word of the year», and neologisms of the last few years. The main research methods are statistical, comparative, and lexicographic description. Usually nomination «Word of the year» presents words, long-existing in the Russian language, borrowings, as well as author’s occasionalisms. The cultural and social aspects prevail in this campaign, while linguistic aspects are not involved. It seems that the verbal image of the year is a more complex and mosaic phenomenon. It can be reconstructed with the help of representative linguistic data scrupulously collected by lexicographers.
