Abstract In recent years, the concept of unarticulated constitutes has generated a fierce debate both in the philosophy of language and in linguistic semantics and pragmatics. By unarticulated constituent is meant a propositional (or conceptual) constituent of a sentence that is communicated by the speaker in uttering that sentence, but is not linguistically represented in that uttered sentence. The main aim of this article is to provide a neo-Gricean pragmatic analysis of unarticulated constituents, showing that the current existing mechanism of neo-Gricean pragmatic theory can handle unarticulated constituents in a straightforward and elegant way. Second, I defend the neo-Gricean position that the pragmatic enrichment of unarticulated constituents is nothing but a neo-Gricean, pre-semantic conversational implicature. And third and finally, I briefly evaluate an alternative, formal syntactico-semantic analysis of unarticulated constituents.

Abstract This treatise assesses the pragmatic implicature derived during the use of postproverbials in Igbo language and culture. Igbo proverbs have been so much studied that it would certainly be monotonous for a paroemiographer to resume making belated significance of Igbo speculations on the meaning and essence of a proverb. It is a glaring fact that that there is virtually no substantial controversy about the importance of proverbs in culture and the significance of proverbs in Igbo traditional society as a repository and verbal effulgence of wisdom is indeed proverbial. This study relies on Austin’s pragmatic theory of speech acts, conversational implicature and presupposition. The data is drawn from oral interview conducted by the researchers on ten Igbo elders with the aim of unraveling the linguistic idiosyncrasies associated with the connotation of postproverbials as it relates to different contextual usages. The paper will look at the development of this threat to the fixability of Igbo proverbs, the normative rapture and by extension establish the presence of “new” proverbs with new syntactic forms, new meanings and perhaps, new values. The analytic emphasis is based on the type of transformation, the shift in the construction of users. This paper concludes that postproverbiality is situated in the dynamic space of informal speech of a younger and adventurous generation.

Penelitian ini berfokus pada deksripsi bentuk irai hyougen dan bentuk kesantunan dalam irai hyougen yang muncul pada percakapan di acara berita Asaichi. Penelitian dilakukan lewat kajian pragmatik. Identifikasi komponen percakapan yang mengandung irai hyougen dilakukan berdasarkan bentuk irai hyougen maupun implikasi percakapan. Penanda kesantunan diamati lewat kemunculan ungkapan hormat, ungkapan kerendahan hati, ungkapan penimbang rasa, ungkapan beri-terima, serta ungkapan tidak langsung. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pada acara Asaichi, irai hyougen dinyatakan dalam bentuk suikoukei irai hyougen, meireikei irai hyougen, youkyuukei irai hyougen, ganbou hyoushutsuteki irai hyougen, dan enkyokuteki irai hyougen. Penanda kesantunan irai hyougen ditemukan dalam bentuk penggunaan kenjougo, penggunaan bentuk formal dari nomina dan pronomina, sebutan hormat, penggunaan irai dalam bentuk tidak langsung, penambahan adverbia maupun partikel akhir kalimat untuk menunjukkan rasa hormat pada petutur, menunjukkan kerendahan hati, empati, kehati-hatian, penghindaran kesan paksaan serta penghalus tuturan. This article examine form of irai hyogen and politeness which reflected in irai hyougen in Japanese television programme called Asaichi. In this study, using pragmatic approach, forms of irai hyougen  are being examined through lexical forms, grammatical forms and conversational implicature. Politeness in irai hyougen are being examined by the emergence of expression of respect, expression of humility, expression of concern for others, expression of giving and receiving favor, indirect expression in irai hyougen. The findings of the study showed that in Asaichi, irai hyogen are expressed through suikoukei irai hyougen, meireikei irai hyougen, youkyuukei irai hyougen, ganbou hyoushutsuteki irai hyougen, and enkyokuteki irai hyougen. Politeness in irai hyougen can be identified by the use of kenjougo, formal forms of noun or pronoun to defer the hearer, terms of respect, indirect request pattern, the use of adverbs and sentence ending particles to show humility, empathy, carefulness, to smooth the request, and avoiding constraint in request are preferable.

Pasambahan a Minangkabau society how to speak, the speech full of philosophy which delivery indirectly. This turned out to be complicated understood by some people who did not understand the pasambahan. In the present study, the authors sought to express the values of the philosophy contained in pasambahan as how to speak the traditional Minang community. As time goes, these traditions are disappearing from everyday society, for it needs a way to preserve it back. Pariaman is one area that has always practiced this tradition. In this study, the authors attempted to peel pasambahan text in a manner which according to the author deconstruction approach is one approach that is very controversial in the social sciences today. The process of data analysis by using some theories of social science (eclectic). Among the pragmatic theory and semiotics. The method used in the form of qualitative observation, the authors go directly spaciousness and interact with competent informants. From the discussion, the authors found ten diplomatic elementscontained in tradition and pasamabahan text. These elements in them, '' opener, apology, positioning/element of certainty, stringsattached, request (permission), receipt, delivery destination, contracts/agreements/agreements, offers, and resolver ''.

In a series of essays—in particular, his 1994 essay “Assure and Threaten”—David Gauthier develops a two-tier pragmatic theory of practical rationality and argues, within that theory, for a distinctive account of the rationality of following through with prior assurances or threats. His discussion suggests that certain kinds of temporally extended agency play a special role in one’s temporally extended life going well. I argue that a related idea about diachronic self-governance helps explain a sense in which an accepted deliberative standard can be self-reinforcing. And this gives us resources to adjust Gauthier’s theory in response to a threat of what Kieran Setiya has called a “fragmentation of practical reason.”

I applaud the arguments in Lepore and Stone (2015) that Gricean, Neo-Gricean, and Relevance theories of conversational implicature and utterance interpretation are deeply flawed because the additional meanings speakers convey when using sentences are conventional rather than calculable. I then go on to rebut several conclusions Lepore and Stone endorse that do not follow: that there is no such thing as conversational implicature; that in figurative speech speakers do not mean anything beyond what the sentences they utter mean; that anything a speaker means is something the speaker directly intends and says; and that any meanings conveyed conventionally are given by the grammar or semantics of the language. Along the way, I argue that conventions are constituted by certain causal processes, not mutual expectations, and I distinguish two types of speaker meaning.

In addition to his views on ijtihād and tajdīd, al-Suyūṭī’s lasting influence in Islamic legal thought lies in the area of legal precepts (pithy maxims or questions that sum up areas of the law). Al-Suyūṭī’s al-Ashbāh wa-l-naẓāʾir stands as a core work in this genre of legal literature and is still a popular textbook for students at Egypt’s premier institution of religious learning, al-Azhar. Using the pragmatic theory of Grice and others, I argue that legal precepts fulfill a number of key discursive functions for the jurist. It is with al-Suyūṭī’s Ashbāh that he is most successful in asserting his authority as an aggregator, abstractor, and framer of the law. The power of framing lies in the ability to distill key universal principles from the vast corpus of Islamic substantive law and to assert that these principles represent the essence and spirit of the Sharīʿa.
