Meta-analysis of the field efficacy of seed- and soil-applied nematicides on Meloidogyne incognita and Rotylenchulus reniformis across the U. S. Cotton Belt

Meta-analysis was used to compare yield protection and nematode suppression provided by two, seed- and two, soil-applied nematicides against Meloidogyne incognita and Rotylenchulus reniformis on cotton across three years and several trial locations in the United States Cotton Belt. Nematicides consisted of thiodicarb- and fluopyram-treated seed, aldicarb and fluopyram applied in-furrow and combinations of the seed treatments and soil-applied fluopyram. The nematicides had no effect on nematode reproduction or root infection but had a significant impact on seed cotton yield response (¯D) with an average increase of 176 and 197 kg/ha relative to the nontreated control in M. incognita and R. reniformis infested fields, respectively. However, because of significant variation in yield protection and nematode suppression by nematicides, five or six moderator variables [cultivar resistance (M. incognita only), nematode infestation level, nematicide treatment, application method, trial location, and growing season] were used depending on nematode species. In M. incognita infested fields, greater yield protection was observed with nematicides applied in-furrow and seed-applied + in-furrow than solo seed-applied nematicide applications. Most notably of these in-furrow nematicides were aldicarb and fluopyram (>131 g/ha) with or without a seed-applied nematicide compared to thiodicarb. In R. reniformis infested fields, moderator variables provided no further explanation of the variation in yield response by nematicides. Furthermore, moderator variables provided little explanation of the variation in nematode suppression by nematicides in M. incognita and R. reniformis infested fields. The limited explanation by the moderator variables on the field efficacy of nematicides in M. incognita and R. reniformis infested fields demonstrates the difficulty of managing these pathogens with nonfumigant nematicides across the U. S. Cotton Belt.

Reniform nematode (Rotylenchulus reniformis) is a yield-limiting pathogen of soybean (Glycine max) in the southeastern region of the United States. A population of 250 recombinant inbred lines (RIL) (F2:8) developed from a cross between reniform nematode resistant soybean cultivar Forrest and susceptible cultivar Williams 82 was utilized to identify regions associated with host suitability. A genetic linkage map was constructed using single-nucleotide polymorphism markers generated by genotyping-by-sequencing. The phenotype was measured in the RIL population and resistance was characterized using normalized and transformed nematode reproduction indices in an optimal univariate cluster analysis. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis using normalized phenotype scores identified two QTLs on each arm of chromosome 18 (rrn-1 and rrn-2). The same QTL analysis performed with log10(x) transformed phenotype data also identified two QTLs: one on chromosome 18 overlapping the same region in the other analysis (rrn-1), and one on chromosome 11 (rrn-3). While rrn-1 and rrn-3 have been reported associated with reduced reproduction of reniform nematode, this is the first report of the rrn-2 region associated with host suitability to reniform nematode. The resistant parent allele at rrn-2 showed an inverse relationship with the resistance phenotype, correlating with an increase in nematode reproduction or host suitability. Several candidate genes within these regions corresponded with host plant defense systems. Interestingly, a characteristic pathogen resistance gene with a leucine-rich repeat was discovered within rrn-2. These genetic markers can be used by soybean breeders in marker-assisted selection to develop lines with resistance to reniform nematode.

The use of foliar fungicides on field corn has increased greatly over the past 5 years in the United States in an attempt to increase yields, despite limited evidence that use of the fungicides is consistently profitable. To assess the value of using fungicides in grain corn production, random-effects meta-analyses were performed on results from foliar fungicide experiments conducted during 2002 to 2009 in 14 states across the United States to determine the mean yield response to the fungicides azoxystrobin, pyraclostrobin, propiconazole + trifloxystrobin, and propiconazole + azoxystrobin. For all fungicides, the yield difference between treated and nontreated plots was highly variable among studies. All four fungicides resulted in a significant mean yield increase relative to the nontreated plots (P < 0.05). Mean yield difference was highest for propiconazole + trifloxystrobin (390 kg/ha), followed by propiconazole + azoxystrobin (331 kg/ha) and pyraclostrobin (256 kg/ha), and lowest for azoxystrobin (230 kg/ha). Baseline yield (mean yield in the nontreated plots) had a significant effect on yield for propiconazole + azoxystrobin (P < 0.05), whereas baseline foliar disease severity (mean severity in the nontreated plots) significantly affected the yield response to pyraclostrobin, propiconazole + trifloxystrobin, and propiconazole + azoxystrobin but not to azoxystrobin. Mean yield difference was generally higher in the lowest yield and higher disease severity categories than in the highest yield and lower disease categories. The probability of failing to recover the fungicide application cost (ploss) also was estimated for a range of grain corn prices and application costs. At the 10-year average corn grain price of $0.12/kg ($2.97/bushel) and application costs of $40 to 95/ha, ploss for disease severity <5% was 0.55 to 0.98 for pyraclostrobin, 0.62 to 0.93 for propiconazole + trifloxystrobin, 0.58 to 0.89 for propiconazole + azoxystrobin, and 0.91 to 0.99 for azoxystrobin. When disease severity was >5%, the corresponding probabilities were 0.36 to 95, 0.25 to 0.69, 0.25 to 0.64, and 0.37 to 0.98 for the four fungicides. In conclusion, the high ploss values found in most scenarios suggest that the use of these foliar fungicides is unlikely to be profitable when foliar disease severity is low and yield expectation is high.

Abstract Background and Objectives The application of mindfulness- and acceptance-based interventions (MABIs) for informal caregivers of people with dementia (PwD) is relatively novel, and the current state of the evidence base is unclear. This meta-analysis examined the effectiveness of MABIs on reducing symptoms of depression and burden in informal caregivers of PwD. The quality of included studies was evaluated and moderator variables explored. Research Design and Methods A literature search of six electronic databases (PsycARTICLES, PsycINFO, MEDLINE Complete, SCOPUS, Web of Science, and ProQuest) was conducted from the first available date to 20 December 2016. Inclusion criteria involved studies that quantitatively investigated the impact of MABIs on depression and/or burden in informal caregivers of PwD. Results Twelve studies, providing data on 321 caregivers, were included. Most used mindfulness-based stress reduction and were conducted in the United States. The average attrition among participants was 15.83%. The pre–post effect of MABIs was large for depression and moderate for burden. These effects were largely maintained at follow-up. Significant heterogeneity of effect sizes was observed, with no significant moderators identified. Study quality varied from very poor to moderately good. Discussion and Implications The low attrition and moderate to large effects suggest that MABIs are acceptable and beneficial for informal caregivers of PwD. The lack of significant moderators could advocate services using more cost-effective forms of MABIs. Further higher-quality research is needed to improve the robustness of the evidence base and enable a meta-analysis to thoroughly examine and quantify moderator variables.

Random-effect meta-analyses were performed on data from 240 field trials conducted between 2005 and 2018 across nine U.S. states and Ontario, Canada, to quantify the yield response of soybean after application of foliar fungicides at beginning pod (R3). Meta-analysis showed that the overall mean yield response when fungicide was used compared to not applying a fungicide was 2.7% (110 kg/ha). Moderator variables were also investigated and included fungicide group, growing season, planting date, and base yield, which all significantly influenced the yield response. There was also evidence that precipitation from the time of planting to the R3 growth stage influenced yield when fungicide was used (P = 0.059). Fungicides containing a premix of active ingredients from multiple groups (either two or three ingredients) increased the yield by 3.0% over not applying a fungicide. The highest and lowest yield responses were observed in 2005 and 2007, respectively. Better yield response to fungicides (a 3.0% increase) occurred when soybeans were planted not later than 21 May and when total precipitation between planting and the R3 application date was above historic averages. Temperatures during the season did not influence the yield response . Yield response to fungicide was higher (a 4.7% increase) in average yield category (no spray control yield 2878 to 3758 kg/ha) and then gradually decreased with increasing base yield. Partial economic analyses indicated that use of foliar fungicides is less likely to be profitable when foliar diseases are absent or at low levels.

A survey was conducted through the five argricultural regions of Puerto Rico to determine distribution and population density of the nematode species associated with plantain. Fourteen genera, represented by 19 species of phytoparasitic nematodes were found in association with the crop: Ditylenchus, Helicotylenchus, Hoplolaimus, longidorus, Meloidogyne, Paratylenchus, Pratylenchus, Pseudhalenchus, Quinisulcius, Radopholus, Rotylenchulus, Tylenchorhynchus, Tylenchus, and Xiphinema. Meloidogyne incognita, Helicotylenchus spp., Radopholus similis, and Rotylenchulus reniformis were the most widely distributed nematode species throughout the Island. On the other hand, M. incognita, P. coffeae, R. similis, Helicotylenchus spp. , and R. reniformis had higher population densities.

Abstract Nowadays, rice is among the most preferred crops for rotation with soybean and cotton in the large producing areas of Central Brazil. Nevertheless, the host status of the Brazilian upland rice cultivars for Meloidogyne incognita race 4 and Rotylenchulus reniformis has not been investigated and remains unknown. This study dealt with the assessment of the host response of some selected Brazilian upland rice cultivars to these nematodes under glasshouse conditions. The host status for each tested interaction was based on the nematode reproduction factor (RF) and number of nematodes (g root)–1. Two experiments with M. incognita race 4, referred to as trial 1 (initial population (IP) = 4000) and trial 2 (IP = 800), included, respectively, 14 cultivars (cvs AN Cirad 141, BRS Monarca, BRS Primavera, AN Cambará, BRS Pepita, BRS Curinga, BRS Sertaneja, IAPAR 9, IAPAR 62, IAPAR 63, IAPAR 64, IAPAR 117, IAC 201, IAC 202) and 19 cultivars (the same ones in Experiment 1 plus cvs BRS Maravilha, BRS Talento, BRS Bonança, Ricetec Ecco, BRS Soberana). Except for cv. BRS Pepita, rated as resistant, the cultivars were rated as susceptible or moderately susceptible (RF means ranged from 1.09 to 12.56). In a third experiment with R. reniformis (IP = 1800) that included the same cultivars as in Experiment 1, all cultivars were rated as resistant (RF means ranged from 0.01 to 0.29).

AbstractThe orientation of juveniles of Meloidogyne incognita and Rotylenchulus reniformis was studied in salt gradients created in a linear agarose gel. Twelve combinations of calcium, potassium, sodium or ammonium cations and chloride, nitrate or sulphate anions were tested. The orientation of juveniles of M. incognita was induced by the constitutive cation of the salt, e.g., calcium salts had no effect while the other salts and especially ammonium salts and ammonium nitrate were strongly repellent. In contrast, the orientation of juveniles of R. reniformis was induced by the constitutive anion of the salt, e.g., chloride salts were found to be repellent while sulphate and nitrate salts were attractive. These results are discussed as possible novel control strategies for economically important plant parasitic nematodes. In other respects, these differences in chemical preferences may partly explain the observed geographical distribution of these nematode species according to the ionic content of the soils.

Meloidogyne incognita, the southern root-knot nematode (RKN), is the most predominant plant-parasitic nematode species of tomato and causes significant yield loss. The Mi-1.2 gene confers resistance in tomatoes to M. incognita; however, virulent RKN populations capable of parasitizing resistant tomato cultivars have been reported from different regions in the world. Four naturally occurring virulent populations of M. incognita were found in vegetable fields from four counties in Georgia with no history of tomato cultivation of the Mi gene. Two consecutive greenhouse trials showed that all four virulent RKN populations reproduced on tomato cultivars, including Amelia, Skyway, and Myrtle with the Mi-1 gene, while an avirulent population of M. incognita race 3 was unable to overcome host resistance. Virulent RKN populations varied in reproduction among resistant cultivars, with Ma6 population having the greatest reproduction potential. No difference in penetration potential of the virulent (Ma6) and avirulent populations were found on susceptible and resistant tomato cultivars. However, virulent Ma6 population females were successful at egg-laying, while the avirulent female development was arrested in the resistant cultivars. The virulent Ma6 population also induced feeding sites in the roots of resistant cultivars, while the avirulent population did not. To our knowledge, this is the first report of resistance-breaking populations of M. incognita in Georgia and the second state in the United States after California.
