A novel actinomycete, strain TVU1T, was isolated from leaves of the indigenous South African plant Tulbaghia violacea. Applying a polyphasic approach, the isolate was identified as a member of the genus Micromonospora. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain TVU1T was most closely related to Micromonospora echinospora DSM 43816T. However, phylogenetic analysis based on gyrB gene sequences showed that strain TVU1T was most closely related to the type strains of Micromonospora aurantiaca and Micromonospora chalcea. DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain TVU1T and the type strains of M. echinospora, M. aurantiaca and M. chalcea were 7.6±4.5, 45.9±2.0 and 60.9±4.5 %, respectively. Strain TVU1T could be distinguished from the type strains of all three of these species by several physiological characteristics, such as colony colour, NaCl tolerance, growth temperature range and sole carbon source utilization pattern. Strain TVU1T (=DSM 45142T=NRRL B-24576T) therefore represents a novel species for which the name Micromonospora tulbaghiae sp. nov. is proposed.

A polyphasic study was undertaken to establish the taxonomic status of a Gram-positive, aerobic actinomycete, strain HPA177T, isolated from a marine sponge, Hymeniacidon perleve. The organism formed branching, non-fragmenting vegetative hyphae and produced black pigment. Chemotaxonomic characteristics were consistent with its assignment to the genus Actinoalloteichus. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain HPA177T formed a robust clade with type strains of the genus Actinoalloteichus, but was distinct from them. A number of phenotypic characteristics also readily distinguished strain HPA177T from species of the genus Actinoalloteichus with validly published names. On the basis of the above data, it is proposed that strain HPA177T represents a novel species, Actinoalloteichus hymeniacidonis sp. nov. The type strain of Actinoalloteichus hymeniacidonis is HPA177T (=CGMCC 4.2500T=JCM 13436T).

An actinomycete strain, NAR01T, was isolated from root nodules of a Coriaria plant. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain NAR01T showed most similarity to the type strains of Micromonospora endolithica (98.94 %) and Micromonospora chersina (98.4 %). The chemotaxonomic results obtained confirmed the taxonomic position of the isolate within the genus Micromonospora, and revealed differences at the species level. Physiological and biochemical tests showed that strain NAR01T could be clearly distinguished from its closest phylogenetic neighbours, while DNA–DNA hybridization results indicated that the isolate represents a novel species. On the basis of these results, strain NAR01T (=DSM 44875T=LMG 23557T) is proposed as the type strain of the novel species Micromonospora coriariae sp. nov.

An actinomycete strain was recovered from a pond where radon is known to be dissolved. A polyphasic study was undertaken to identify the new isolate. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain WA201T showed closest similarity to the type strains of Micromonospora carbonacea (98·5 %) and Micromonospora matsumotoense (98·1 %). The chemotaxonomic results confirmed the taxonomic position of the isolate in the genus Micromonospora. DNA–DNA relatedness values supported the classification of this isolate as a novel species. A number of physiological and biochemical tests were able to distinguish strain WA201T from its closest phylogenetic neighbours. Therefore, it is proposed that isolate WA201T (=DSM 44830T=LMG 22229T) be considered the type strain representing a novel species, Micromonospora mirobrigensis sp. nov.

A novel Borrelia species, Candidatus Borrelia javanense, was found in ectoparasite ticks, Amblyomma javanense, from Manis javanica pangolins seized in anti-smuggling operations in southern China. Overall, 12 tick samples in 227 (overall prevalence 5.3%) were positive for Candidatus B. javanense, 9 (5.1%) in 176 males, and 3 (5.9%) in 51 females. The phylogenetic analysis, based on the 16S rRNA gene and the flagellin gene sequences of the Borrelia sp., exhibited strong evidence that Candidatus B. javanense did not belong to the Lyme disease Borrelia group and the relapsing fever Borrelia group but another lineage of Borrelia. The discovery of the novel Borrelia species suggests that A. javanense may be the transmit vector, and the M. javanica pangolins should be considered a possible origin reservoir in the natural circulation of these new pathogens. To our knowledge, this is the first identification of a novel Borrelia species agent in A. javanense from pangolins. Whether the novel agent is pathogenic to humans is unknown and needs further research.

An actinomycete, designated strain GIMN4.003T, was isolated from seawater collected in Sanya, China. It produced white aerial mycelium and yellow substrate mycelium on Gause’s synthetic agar medium no. 1. The substrate mycelium colour was not sensitive to pH. Scanning electron microscopy observations revealed that GIMN4.003T produced straight to flexuous spore chains of rough to warty spores. ll-Diaminopimelic acid was present in the cell-wall hydrolysate. Based on chemotaxonomy and morphological features, strain GIMN4.003T was identified as a member of the genus Streptomyces. Melanin was not produced. No antimicrobial activity was detected against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Penicillium citrinum or Candida albicans. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the highest sequence similarity was to Streptomyces radiopugnans R97T (99.0 %). However, DNA relatedness between GIMN4.003T and S. radiopugnans DSM 41901T was low (41.24±1.47 %). Furthermore, the morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics of strain GIMN4.003T were different from those of S. radiopugnans DSM 41901T and the type strains of other closely related Streptomyces species. On the basis of its physiological and molecular properties, it is evident that strain GIMN4.003T ( = CCTCCM 208215T  = NRRL B-24801T) represents the type strain of a novel species within the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces fenghuangensis sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming, aerobic bacterium designated SGD-V-25T was isolated from Veraval sediment sample, India. Strain SGD-V-25T was capable of growing at 25–50 °C (optimum 37 °C), pH 6–12 (optimum pH 7.0) and with 0–5 % (w/v) NaCl. The taxonomic position of this strain was deduced using a polyphasic approach and the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the isolate belongs to the phylum Firmicutes , forming the cluster with Bacillus badius MTCC 1548T, with which it shares highest similarity of 99.1 % with 13 nt differences. Other type strains of the genus Bacillus showed less than 96 % similarity. The cell wall contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. The polar lipid profile of strain SGD-V-25T showed the presence of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phsophoglycolipid and two aminophospholipids. The predominant isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, C16 : 1ω11c and C16 : 0. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain SGD-V-25T was 37.6 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA hybridization, strain SGD-V-25T could be clearly distinguished from closely related members of the genus Bacillus , and the name Bacillus encimensis sp. nov., is proposed to accommodate this strain. The type strain is SGD-V-25T ( = NCIM 5513T = DSM 28241T).

A novel actinomycete, strain KST3-10T, was isolated from sand sediment of a beach in Jeju, Korea, and was subjected to polyphasic taxonomic characterization. The organism produced circular, smooth, translucent, apricot-coloured colonies comprising coccoid- or rod-shaped cells. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the organism belonged to the family Geodermatophilaceae and consistently formed a distinct sub-branch outside the radiation of the genus Blastococcus. The organism showed 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 98.2 % with respect to Blastococcus aggregatus DSM 4725T and 98.1 % with respect to Blastococcus saxobsidens BC444T. The type strains of the two Blastococcus species shared 98.2 % sequence similarity with respect to each other, whereas the levels of sequence similarity between the novel organism and the type strains of the less closely related neighbours, Modestobacter multiseptatus and Geodermatophilus obscurus, were in the range 96.2–96.9 %. The physiological, biochemical and chemotaxonomic data revealed that the novel organism can be readily differentiated from members of the genus Blastococcus and that it merits separate species status. On the basis of the phenotypic and genotypic evidence, strain KST3-10T represents a novel species of the genus Blastococcus, for which the name Blastococcus jejuensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KST3-10T (=NRRL B-24440T=KCCM 42251T).

A yellow-coloured bacterial strain, designated HB2T, isolated from stratum water was investigated using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Cells were Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-spore-forming, non-flagellated and rod-shaped. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain was a member of the genus Luteimonas , its three closest neighbours being Luteimonas aquatica BCRC 17731T (97.5 % similarity), Luteimonas marina JCM 12488T (97.3 %) and Luteimonas aestuarii DSM 19680T (96.9 %). Strain HB2T could clearly be distinguished from these type strains based on phylogenetic analysis, DNA–DNA hybridization, fatty acid composition and a range of physiological and biochemical characteristics. It is evident from the genotypic and phenotypic data that strain HB2T represents a novel species of the genus Luteimonas , for which the name Luteimonas huabeiensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HB2T ( = DSM 26429T = CICC 11005sT).

Two actinomycete strains, JSM1-1T and JSM1-3, were isolated from sea sand collected in Thailand. Their taxonomic position was determined using a polyphasic approach. The chemotaxonomic characteristics of these strains coincided with those of the genus Micromonospora, i.e. the presence of meso-diaminopimelic acid and N-glycolyl muramic acid in the peptidoglycan, whole cell sugar pattern D, phospholipids type II, and cellular fatty acid type 3b. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed a close relationship between strains JSM1-1T and JSM1-3 (99.8 %), and between JSM1-1T and Micromonospora aurantiaca JCM 10878T (99.3 %), Micromonospora chalcea JCM 3031T (99.0 %), and Micromonospora coxensis JCM 13248 T (99.0 %). However, strains JSM1-1T and JSM1-3 could be clearly distinguished from these type strains by a low DNA–DNA relatedness and by phenotypic differences. On the basis of the data presented, a new species, Micromonospora marina sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is JSM1-1T (=JCM 12870T =PCU 269T =TISTR 1566T).

A micro-organism, DCY12T, comprising Gram-negative, non-motile, pale-yellow rods was isolated from soil from a ginseng field in South Korea and was investigated to determine its taxonomic status. It grew optimally at 30 °C and at pH 7.0, the G+C content of its DNA was 40.5 mol%, the major components of the fatty acid profile were C16 : 0 and C18 : 1 and the major ubiquinone was Q-8. A phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the novel isolate was most closely related to Hydrocarboniphaga effusa AP103T (89.2 %), Nevskia ramosa Soe1 (88.8 %) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 10145T (83.2 %). The phenotypic, physiological, metabolic and phylogenetic properties of DCY12T suggest that it represents a novel genus (class Gammaproteobacteria) and species, for which the name Solimonas soli gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Solimonas soli is DCY12T (=KCTC 12834T =LMG 24014T).
