A Gram-staining-positive, coccoid to rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain YC6903T, was isolated from a halophytic plant (Carex scabrifolia Steud.) collected from sand dunes at Namhae Island, Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strain YC6903T grew optimally at 30 °C and at pH 8.0. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain YC6903T belongs to the genus Nocardioides in the family Nocardioidaceae. Strain YC6903T was related most closely to Nocardioides pyridinolyticus OS4T (97.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Nocardioides dokdonensis FR1436T (96.6 %), Nocardioides aquiterrae GW-9T (96.6 %) and Nocardioides hankookensis DS-30T (96.6 %). The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained ll-diaminopimelic acid and MK-8(H4) was the major respiratory quinone. The mean (±sd) level of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain YC6903T and N. pyridinolyticus OS4T was 53.5±5.5 %. The predominant cellular fatty acid of strain YC6903T was iso-C16 : 0 (28.9 %). The DNA G+C content was 71.7 mol%. Phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic data indicated that strain YC6903T represents a novel species of the genus Nocardioides, for which the name Nocardioides caricicola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YC6903T (=KACC 13778T =DSM 22177T).

A novel marine, Gram-staining-negative, yellow-pigmented, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated CNU004T, was isolated from a seawater sample collected on the coastline of Jeju Island, South Korea. The strain was strictly aerobic, non-flagellated, non-gliding and oxidase- and catalase-positive. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain CNU004T belongs to a distinct lineage in the family Flavobacteriaceae. Strain CNU004T exhibited levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 93.8–93.9 % to its nearest phylogenetic neighbours, members of the genera Gaetbulibacter, Yeosuana and Algibacter. The new isolate required sea salts or artificial seawater for growth. The optimum ranges of temperature and pH for growth were 30–35 °C and pH 7.0–8.0. The DNA G+C content of strain CNU004T was 37.7 mol%. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH. Menaquinone-6 was the major respiratory quinone. Zeaxanthin was the major carotenoid pigment produced, and flexirubin-type pigments were not produced. Strain CNU004T was able to degrade starch and agar. Based on its phenotypic and genotypic characteristics and on the phylogenetic evidence presented, strain CNU004T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the family Flavobacteriaceae, for which the name Hyunsoonleella jejuensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Hyunsoonleella jejuensis sp. nov. is CNU004T (=KCTC 22242T =DSM 21035T).

A Gram-staining-negative, heterotrophic, facultatively anaerobic bacterium, designated AE6T, was isolated from a grouper (Epinephelus malabaricas) culture tank in a recirculating mariculture system located in Tianjin, China. Strain AE6T was able to grow at 15–40 °C (optimum, 30–35 °C), at pH 5.5–10.0 (optimum, pH 7.0–7.5) and in the presence of 0.5–7 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 2–3 %). It contained Q-8 as the predominant respiratory quinone, phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylglycerol (PG) as the major polar lipids and C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c (40.4 %), C18 : 1ω7c (15.5 %) and C16 : 0 (13.5 %) as the predominant cellular fatty acids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 47.1 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain AE6T belonged to the genus Photobacterium (94.2–96.8 % of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and formed a distinct phylogenetic lineage within the genus and exhibited the highest sequence similarity to Photobacterium aphoticum CECT 7614T (96.8 %). Multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) using four loci (gyrB, rpoA, pyrH and recA) also revealed that strain AE6T was phylogenetically related to the genus Photobacterium . Based on the phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic evidence, strain AE6T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Photobacterium , for which the name Photobacterium aquae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AE6T ( = CGMCC 1.12159T = JCM 18480T).

A Gram-staining-variable, motile, endospore-forming and rod-shaped bacterial strain, IDS-20T, was isolated from a marine solar saltern in Korea and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic investigation. Strain IDS-20T grew optimally at 37 °C, at pH 7.5–8.0 and in the presence of 4–5 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain IDS-20T belongs to the genus Virgibacillus. Strain IDS-20T exhibited 93.4–96.6 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the type strains of species of the genus Virgibacillus. Strain IDS-20T had MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and a cell-wall peptidoglycan based on meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0 and major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and two unidentified phospholipids. The DNA G+C content was 39.5 mol%. The phylogenetic distinctiveness and differential phenotypic characteristics of strain IDS-20T demonstrated that this strain can be distinguished from recognized species of the genus Virgibacillus. On the basis of the data presented, strain IDS-20T represents a novel species of the genus Virgibacillus, for which the name Virgibacillus campisalis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is IDS-20T ( = KCTC 13727T  = CCUG 59308T).

A Gram-stain-positive, endospore-forming, moderately halophilic bacterial strain, NEAU-ST10-40T, was isolated from a saline and alkaline soil in Anda City, China. It was strictly aerobic, rod-shaped and motile by peritrichous flagella. It formed light yellow colonies and grew at NaCl concentrations of 3–15 % (w/v) (optimum, 8 %, w/v), at pH 7.0–9.0 (optimum, pH 8.0) and at 4–60 °C (optimum, 30 °C). It contained meso-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that it belonged to the genus Halobacillus. Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain NEAU-ST10-40T and the type strains of related species of the genus Halobacillus ranged from 98.8 % (Halobacillus alkaliphilus FP5T) to 97.1 % (Halobacillus kuroshimensis IS-Hb7T). DNA–DNA hybridization relatedness values between strain NEAU-ST10-40T and H. alkaliphilus DSM 18525T, Halobacillus campisalis KCTC 13144T, Halobacillus yeomjeoni DSM 17110T, Halobacillus halophilus DSM 2266T, Halobacillus litoralis DSM 10405T, Halobacillus dabanensis DSM 18199T, Halobacillus salinus DSM 18897T, Halobacillus naozhouensis DSM 21183T, Halobacillus trueperi DSM 10404T and Halobacillus salsuginis DSM 21185T were from 43 ± 1 to 19 ± 1 % (mean ± sd). The DNA G+C content was 39.3 mol%. The major fatty acids (>10 %) were anteiso-C15:0, anteiso-C17:0 and iso-C16:0, the only respiratory quinone detected was MK-7, and polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, two unknown phospholipids and three unknown lipids. On the basis of the data presented, strain NEAU-ST10-40T is considered to represent a novel species, for which the name Halobacillus andaensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NEAU-ST10-40T ( = CGMCC 1.12153T = DSM 25866T).

A novel pale-pink-coloured strain, designated R9-65T, was isolated from a tundra soil near Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard Archipelago, Norway (78° N). The cells were facultatively anaerobic, Gram-staining-negative, non-motile and rod-shaped. Growth occurred at 4–32 °C (optimum, 25–28 °C), at pH 5.0–9.0 (optimum, pH 6.0–7.0) and with 0–1.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, no NaCl). Flexirubin-type pigments were absent. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain R9-65T belonged to the genus Mucilaginibacter in the family Sphingobacteriaceae . The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain R9-65T and type strains of related species ranged from 93.4 to 96.6 %. Strain R9-65T contained summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c, 34.3 %) and iso-C15 : 0 (20.3 %) as major cellular fatty acids, MK-7 as the major respiratory quinone, and phosphatidylethanolamine as the main polar lipid. The DNA G+C content of strain R9-65T was 47.2 mol%. On the basis of phylogenetic, physiological and chemotaxonomic data, strain R9-65T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter , for which the name Mucilaginibacter soli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is R9-65T ( = CCTCC AB 2010331T = NRRL B-59458T).

A novel Gram-staining-positive, moderately halophilic, facultatively alkaliphilic, non-motile, catalase-positive, oxidase-negative, endospore-forming, facultatively anaerobic rod, designated JSM 076093T, was isolated from a sea urchin (Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus) collected from Naozhou Island in the South China Sea. Growth occurred with 0.5–25 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 5–8 %) and at pH 6.0–10.5 (optimum pH 8.0) and 5–40 °C (optimum 30–35 °C). meso-Diaminopimelic acid was present in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. The predominant respiratory quinone was menaquinone 7 and the polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and one unidentified phospholipid. The major cellular fatty acids (>10 % of the total) were anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and iso-C14 : 0. The genomic DNA G+C content was 38.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain JSM 076093T belonged to the genus Bacillus and was related most closely to Bacillus hwajinpoensis SW-72T (99.1 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Bacillus algicola KMM 3737T (97.3 %). The combination of results from the phylogenetic analysis, DNA–DNA hybridization and phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characterization supported the conclusion that strain JSM 076093T represents a novel species of the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus hemicentroti sp. nov. is proposed, with JSM 076093T ( = DSM 23007T = KCTC 13710T) as the type strain.

A Gram-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming, halophilic rod, designated JPCCMB0017T, was isolated from a marine sediment of the coastal area of Okinawa, Japan. The isolate formed orange–red colonies on marine agar. Bacteriochlorophyll α was absent and sphingoglycolipid 1 and other carotenoids, including astaxanthin, adonixanthin and zeaxanthin, were present. Ubiquinone-10 (Q-10) was the main respiratory quinone and C18 : 1ω7c was the major cellular fatty acid. The G+C content of DNA was 59.1 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that the isolate was a member of the genus Altererythrobacter in the family Erythrobacteraceae. Strain JPCCMB0017T exhibited 96.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Altererythrobacter marinus H32T. Unlike other members of the genus Altererythrobacter, strain JPCCMB0017T reduced nitrate. On the basis of genotypic and phenotypic data, a novel species is proposed to accommodate this isolate, with the name Altererythrobacter ishigakiensis sp. nov. The type strain is JPCCMB0017T ( = NITE-AP48T = ATCC BAA-2084T = NBRC 107699T).

A novel facultatively anaerobic bacterium, strain HC45T, was isolated from sediment of a brackish meromictic lake in Japan, Lake Harutori. Cells were pleomorphic, and filamentous bodies were 5–100 μm in length. For growth, the optimum pH was 7.0 and the optimum temperature was 45–50 °C. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 71 mol%. iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0 were the major components in the cellular fatty acid profile. The predominant respiratory quinone was MK-7. Strain HC45T shared very low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with cultivated strains ( ≤ 85 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the isolate was distantly related to members of the family Symbiobacteriaceae and family XVII Incertae Sedis in the class Clostridia, and they formed a cluster separate from canonical species of the phylum Firmicutes. These results indicated that strain HC45T should not be placed in any existing class of the phylum Firmicutes. On the basis of phylogenetic and phenotypic characterization, Limnochorda pilosa gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed with HC45T ( = NBRC 110152T = DSM 28787T) as the type strain, as the first representative of novel taxa, Limnochordales ord. nov., Limnochordaceae fam. nov. in Limnochordia classis. nov.

A Gram-staining-negative, heterotrophic, facultatively anaerobic bacterium, designated S1T, was isolated from the Cynoglossus semilaevis culture pond in a recirculating mariculture system in Tianjin, China. The taxonomy of strain S1T was studied by using a polyphasic approach. Cells of strain S1T were non-spore-forming, curved rods, 0.4–0.6 µm wide and 1.2–2.0 µm long, and motile by means of a single polar flagellum. The strain was positive for oxidase and catalase activities. Strain S1T was able to grow at 4–30 °C (optimum, 25 °C), at pH 5.5–10.0 (optimum, pH 6.5–7.5) and in the presence of 1–5 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 2 %). Strain S1T contained Q-8 as the sole respiratory quinone and C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c and C16 : 0 as the predominant cellular fatty acids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 40.1 mol% (T m). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences placed strain S1T in the genus Colwellia , and it formed a distinct lineage in the phylogenetic tree together with Colwellia meonggei MA1-3T, Colwellia aestuarii SMK-10T, Colwellia polaris 537T and Colwellia chukchiensis BCw111T, with 97.7, 96.1, 95.9 and 95.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to these strains, respectively. DNA–DNA relatedness of strain S1T to Colwellia meonggei MA1-3T was 23.5±3.6 %. On the basis of the phylogenetic and phenotypic evidence, strain S1T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Colwellia , for which the name Colwellia aquaemaris sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S1T ( = CGMCC 1.12165T = JCM 18479T).

Two closely related, Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, spore-forming strains, B27T and F6-B70, were isolated from soil samples of Tianmu Mountain National Natural Reserve in Zhejiang, China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene and rpoB sequences indicated that the isolates were members of the genus Paenibacillus. Both isolates were closely related to Paenibacillus ehimensis IFO 15659T, Paenibacillus elgii SD17T and Paenibacillus koreensis YC300T (≥95.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). DNA–DNA relatedness between strain B27T and P. ehimensis DSM 11029T, P. elgii NBRC 100335T and P. koreensis KCTC 2393T was 21.2, 28.6 and 16.8 %, respectively. The major cellular fatty acids of strains B27T and F6-B70 were anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0. The cell wall contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The two isolates differed from their closest neighbours in terms of phenotypic characteristics and cellular fatty acid profiles (such as variable for oxidase, negative for methyl red test, unable to produce acid from d-fructose and glycogen and relatively higher amounts of iso-C15 : 0 and lower amounts of C16 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0). Strains B27T and F6-B70 represent a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus tianmuensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is B27T ( = DSM 22342T  = CGMCC 1.8946T).
