The morphology, morphogenesis and molecular phylogeny of the marine ciliated protozoan Anteholosticha marimonilata spec. nov., isolated from mollusc-farming waters of the Yellow Sea, Qingdao, PR China, were investigated using microscopic observations of live and protargol-impregnated specimens and by small subunit rRNA gene sequence analysis. The novel species could be distinguished by the following features: an elongated elliptical body, in vivo size 80–160 µm × 30–50 µm; an adoral zone consisting of about 36 membranelles; three frontal, one parabuccal, one buccal, two frontoterminal and usually two pretransverse ventral cirri; 10–13 transverse cirri; a midventral complex composed of 12–17 pairs of cirri only, terminating in posterior 1/5; four or five dorsal kineties; two types of colourless cortical granules; four to nine moniliform macronuclear nodules and one to three micronuclei, and a contractile vacuole positioned at mid-body. Hitherto, the ontogenesis of the genus Anteholosticha has been regarded as rather diverse, which was confirmed by the morphogenetic processes of this novel species. The most noteworthy feature of A. marimonilata was that the proter retained almost the entire parental adoral zone except for a few proximal membranelles that were renewed in situ. The SSU rRNA gene sequence information clearly discriminated this isolate from its congeners. Molecular phylogenetic analyses demonstrated, with high statistical support, that A. marimonilata branched as a sister lineage to the Nothoholosticha–Pseudokeronopsis clade and hence belongs to the core part of the order Urostylida.

Strain HHS 11T was isolated from a water sample collected from the snout of Hamta glacier located in the Himalayan mountain ranges of India. Phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses established the affiliation of the isolate to the genus Dyadobacter. HHS 11T possessed 96 and 95 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with respect to Dyadobacter crusticola and Dyadobacter fermentans, respectively. Furthermore, strain HHS 11T differs from D. crusticola and D. fermentans in a number of phenotypic characteristics. These data suggest that strain HHS 11T represents a novel species of the genus Dyadobacter, for which the name Dyadobacter hamtensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HHS 11T (=JCM 12919T=MTCC 7023T).

Strain M1-8T was isolated from jeotgal, a Korean salt-fermented food. Cells were aerobic, non-motile, Gram-reaction-positive and rod-shaped. Colonies were cream-coloured and circular with entire margins. Strain M1-8T exhibited optimal growth at 25–30 °C and pH 7.0–8.0 and in 0–4 % (w/v) NaCl. The strain tolerated up to 10.0 mM Cr(VI). Phylogenetic analyses of 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain M1-8T represents a novel species in the genus Leucobacter. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of M1-8T exhibited 98.1 % similarity to that of Leucobacter chromiireducens subsp. chromiireducens L-1T. The new isolate was clustered with Leucobacter species on a 16S rRNA gene sequence-based phylogenetic tree. The chromosomal DNA G+C content of strain M1-8T was 62.8 mol%. Its cell-wall peptidoglycan contained 2,4-diaminobutyric acid, glutamic acid, alanine, glycine and γ-aminobutyric acid. The major menaquinone was MK-11 and the predominant fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (63.6 %), anteiso-C17 : 0 (16.7 %) and iso-C16 : 0 (14.2 %). The polar lipid profile of strain M1-8T contained diphosphatidylglycerol and one unknown glycolipid. Significant genotypic and phenotypic differences were found between strain M1-8T and other Leucobacter species. These differentiating characteristics indicate that strain M1-8T represents a novel species of the genus Leucobacter, for which the name Leucobacter salsicius sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is M1-8T (=KACC 21127T =JCM 16362T).

An endospore-forming strain, 20CMT, was isolated from Antarctic sediment and identified as a member of the genus Paenibacillus on the basis of phenotypic and phylogenetic analyses. The organism stained Gram-variable and was facultatively anaerobic. Strain 20CMT was psychrotolerant, growing optimally at 10–15 °C. Like other Paenibacillus species, it contained anteiso-C15 : 0 as the major cellular fatty acid. The DNA G+C content was 40·7 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis placed strain 20CMT within the Paenibacillus cluster, with a similarity value of 99·5 % to Paenibacillus macquariensis DSM 2T. DNA–DNA hybridization experiments between the Antarctic isolate and P. macquariensis DSM 2T revealed a reassociation value of 47 %, indicating that strain 20CMT and P. macquariensis DSM 2T belong to different species. Based on evaluation of morphological, physiological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses, a novel species, Paenibacillus antarcticus sp. nov., is proposed; the type strain is 20CMT (=LMG 22078T=CECT 5836T).

Screening of soil samples from the Durmitor National Park, Serbia and Montenegro, for strains producing immunosuppressants with a similar mechanism of action to FK506 resulted in the isolation of the actinomycete strain MS405T. Isolate MS405T was found to have morphological and phenotypic properties that were consistent with its classification as a Streptomyces strain. The DNA G+C content of strain MS405T was 72 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence data confirmed the taxonomic position of the strain, following the generation of phylogenetic trees by using various treeing algorithms. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, strain MS405T was shown to belong to the Streptomyces albidoflavus ‘supercluster’, being related to Streptomyces aureus DSM 41785T (99.59 % similarity) and Streptomyces kanamyceticus DSM 40500T (99.32 %). The 16S–23S rRNA internally transcribed spacer (ITS) region exhibited variations in length and sequence composition, showing limited usefulness in phylogenetic analyses. However, DNA relatedness values support the classification of this isolate within a novel species. A number of physiological and biochemical tests distinguished strain MS405T from its closest phylogenetic neighbours. Therefore, strain MS405T represents a novel species, for which the name Streptomyces durmitorensis sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain MS405T (=DSM 41863T =CIP 108995T).

A halotolerant, round-endospore-forming, aerobic, Gram-positive bacterium, designated BH724T, was isolated from a solar saltern at Taean in Korea. Cells of this strain were rod-shaped and found to be non-motile. Strain BH724T grew at salinities of 0–10 % (w/v) NaCl with an optimum of 3 % (w/v) NaCl and at temperatures of 15–50 °C with an optimum of 40 °C. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BH724T belonged to the genus Bacillus and that Bacillus aquimaris TF-12T, Bacillus marisflavi TF-11T and Bacillus vietnamensis JCM 11124T were its closest neighbours, sharing 97.3, 97.2 and 97.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, respectively. The genomic DNA G+C content was 39 mol% and the predominant menaquinone was MK-7. Its major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and iso-C14 : 0. The peptidoglycan type was A1α, linked directly through l-lysine. On the basis of morphological, chemotaxonomic, physiological and phylogenetic properties, strain BH724T represents a novel species of the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus seohaeanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BH724T (=KCTC 3913T=DSM 16464T).

An actinomycete, designated strain E71T, was isolated from the stem of Sambucus adnata Wall, a Chinese medicinal plant, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that the organism was a member of the genus Glycomyces, and formed a distinct phyletic line distantly related to recognized species of the genus Glycomyces. Morphological and chemotaxonomic data supported the affiliation of strain E71T to the genus Glycomyces. A number of physiological properties and a unique menaquinone profile allowed differentiation of the strain from related Glycomyces species. It is therefore proposed that strain E71T represents a novel species of the genus Glycomyces, for which the name Glycomyces sambucus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is E71T (=CGMCC 4.3147T=DSM 45047T).

Four Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterial strains, TF-26T, TF-28, TF-42 and TF-53, were isolated from a tidal flat in the Yellow Sea, Korea, and their taxonomic positions were determined by a polyphasic characterization. The strains grew optimally in the presence of 2–3 % (w/v) NaCl and at 30–37 °C. The predominant menaquinone detected in the four strains was MK-6. These strains contained large amounts of fatty acids C16 : 1 ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 3-OH, C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The DNA G+C contents of the four strains were 32·3–32·8 mol%. Strains TF-26T, TF-28, TF-42 and TF-53 showed 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity levels of 99·8–100 % and DNA–DNA relatedness levels of 82–87 %. The four strains exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity levels of 95·0–98·0 % to the type strains of the five current Tenacibaculum species, and DNA–DNA relatedness levels between the four strains and two phylogenetic relatives, Tenacibaculum mesophilum DSM 13764T and Tenacibaculum skagerrakense DSM 14836T, were less than 21 %. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genetic data, strains TF-26T, TF-28, TF-42 and TF-53 were classified in the genus Tenacibaculum as members of a novel species, for which the name Tenacibaculum lutimaris sp. nov. (type strain, TF-26T=KCTC 12302T=DSM 16505T) is proposed.

Two novel Pediococcus strains, Z-9T and Z-17, were isolated from a distilled-spirit-fermenting cellar in Hebei Province, China. The cells were Gram-positive, non-spore-forming, non-motile cocci and occurred in pairs or tetrads. The strains were facultatively anaerobic and produced only lactic acid [d(−) and l(+) isomers in the ratio 50 : 50] from glucose fermentation. Catalase activity was not present. Both strains were able to grow in 6.5 % ethanol and at pH 3.5, but not in 4 % NaCl. The mean genomic G+C content of the two strains was 39.5±0.5 mol% (39 mol% for the type strain, Z-9T). The levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between the two novel strains and related species of the genus Pediococcus ranged from 98.3 to 98.7 %. The levels of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain Z-9T and the phylogenetically closely related pediococci Pediococcus damnosus LMG 11484T, Pediococcus inopinatus LMG 11409T, Pediococcus parvulus LMG 11486T and Pediococcus cellicola LMG 22956T were 14.6, 33, 28.7 and 16.8 %, respectively. On the basis of phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic analyses, a novel species, Pediococcus ethanolidurans sp. nov., is proposed, with strain Z-9T (=AS 1.3889T=LMG 23354T) as the type strain.

A Gram-negative, pink-coloured, rod-shaped, non-flagellated bacterium, designated CL-GP80T, was isolated from a hypertrophic pond located within the campus of Seoul National University, Korea. Analysis of its 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain CL-GP80T belongs to the family Sphingobacteriaceae and is closely related to Pedobacter heparinus ATCC 13125T (95.8 % sequence similarity) and to other members of the genus Pedobacter (90.8–95.3 % similarity). Temperature and pH ranges for growth were 5–33 °C and pH 6–8, respectively. The DNA G+C content was 41.3 mol%. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (37.0 %), iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1 ω7c (24.5 %), and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (11.3 %). Phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses indicated that strain CL-GP80T could be assigned to the genus Pedobacter, but distinguished from recognized species of the genus. Strain CL-GP80T (=KCCM 42272T=JCM 13399T) is therefore proposed as the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Pedobacter roseus sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-variable, motile, endospore-forming, slightly halophilic bacterial strain, designated SW-211T, was isolated from a tidal flat of the Yellow Sea in Korea, and was characterized taxonomically by using a polyphasic approach. The organism grew optimally at 37 °C and in the presence of 2–3 % NaCl. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain SW-211T forms a distinct phylogenetic lineage within the radiation of the cluster comprising Bacillus species. Strain SW-211T had cell-wall peptidoglycan based on meso-diaminopimelic acid. The predominant menaquinone was MK-7 and the major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (34·8 %), iso-C15 : 0 (15·6 %), iso-C16 : 0 (12·5 %) and iso-C14 : 0 (10·0 %). The DNA G+C content was 35·2 mol%. Strain SW-211T exhibited levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of <96·2 % with respect to the type strains of recognized Bacillus species. On the basis of its phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain SW-211T (=KCTC 3898T=DSM 16303T) was classified in the genus Bacillus as the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Bacillus litoralis sp. nov. is proposed.
