An actinomycete, strain FXJ6.011T, was isolated from a cup-shaped sponge collected at Dachan reef, Yangpu in the South China Sea. The strain had morphological characteristics of members of the family Micromonosporaceae. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain FXJ6.011T indicated the highest similarity (98.7 %) to Micromonospora auratinigra JCM 12357T, Micromonospora chaiyaphumensis JCM 12873T and Micromonospora echinofusca JCM 3327T. Analysis of the gyrB gene sequence also showed that strain FXJ6.011T should be assigned to the genus Micromonospora. It contained dd-diaminopimelic acid as the major cell-wall diamino acid and MK-10(H2) as predominant menaquinone. The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidyl mannosides and phosphatidylinositol dimannoside. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1ω8c and C16 : 0. Physiological and biochemical data and low DNA–DNA relatedness values enabled the strain to be differentiated from members of closely related species. Based on phenotypic and genotypic data, strain FXJ6.011T represents a novel Micromonospora species, for which the name Micromonospora yangpuensis sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is FXJ6.011T ( = CGMCC 4.5736T = NBRC 107727T).

Actinomycete strain VC-A46T, which exhibits antifungal activity, was isolated from a soil sample collected from Cheonan, Korea. The strain was determined to belong to the genus Streptomyces, based on its morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics. The cell wall of this strain contained ll-diaminopimelic acid. The predominant fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C16 : 0 and C16 : 1 cis 9. The DNA G+C content of strain VC-A46T was 75·5 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of this strain revealed that it differed from those of the described streptomycetes available in public databases. Analyses of DNA–DNA relatedness data, together with data regarding the strain's morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics, also confirmed that this strain constitutes a novel Streptomyces taxon, which is distinguishable from closely related reference strains. Therefore, it is proposed that strain VC-A46T (=KCCM 42119T=NBRC 100940T) represents the type strain of a novel species, named Streptomyces cheonanensis sp. nov.

An actinomycete, designated strain GIMN4.003T, was isolated from seawater collected in Sanya, China. It produced white aerial mycelium and yellow substrate mycelium on Gause’s synthetic agar medium no. 1. The substrate mycelium colour was not sensitive to pH. Scanning electron microscopy observations revealed that GIMN4.003T produced straight to flexuous spore chains of rough to warty spores. ll-Diaminopimelic acid was present in the cell-wall hydrolysate. Based on chemotaxonomy and morphological features, strain GIMN4.003T was identified as a member of the genus Streptomyces. Melanin was not produced. No antimicrobial activity was detected against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Penicillium citrinum or Candida albicans. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the highest sequence similarity was to Streptomyces radiopugnans R97T (99.0 %). However, DNA relatedness between GIMN4.003T and S. radiopugnans DSM 41901T was low (41.24±1.47 %). Furthermore, the morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics of strain GIMN4.003T were different from those of S. radiopugnans DSM 41901T and the type strains of other closely related Streptomyces species. On the basis of its physiological and molecular properties, it is evident that strain GIMN4.003T ( = CCTCCM 208215T  = NRRL B-24801T) represents the type strain of a novel species within the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces fenghuangensis sp. nov. is proposed.

A novel, yellow-pigmented actinobacterium was isolated from a small stone collected in Jeju, Republic of Korea. The cells of the organism, designated strain R-Ac013T, were Gram-positive, aerobic, non-motile cocci that occurred singly or in pairs. The strain showed growth at 10–37 °C and pH 4.1–11.1, and tolerated 2 % NaCl. On the basis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence, the organism was phylogenetically related to members of the genera Tetrasphaera (94.6–97.1 % sequence similarity), Terrabacter (96.5 %), Knoellia (96.4 %), Terracoccus (96.4 %), Oryzihumus (96.4 %), Janibacter (96.1–96.4 %) and Intrasporangium (96.2 %). The chemotaxonomic results for the organism were as follows: ll-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid in the peptidoglycan, acetyl-type murein, MK-8(H4) as the major menaquinone, a DNA G+C content of 74.1 mol%, and a polar lipid profile that comprised diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol. The fatty acid profile consisted of iso- and anteiso-methyl-branched, straight-chain saturated and monounsaturated types, the major components being iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1 ω8c and iso-C15 : 0. The combination of the phenotypic and phylogenetic data revealed that this strain represents a novel genus and species of the family Intrasporangiaceae, for which the name Lapillicoccus jejuensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is strain R-Ac013T (=KCTC 19200T=DSM 18607T).

A thermophilic, alkaliphilic and catalase-positive bacterium, designated strain HA6T, was isolated from a hot spring in China. The strain was aerobic and chemo-organotrophic and grew optimally at 60 °C, pH 8.5 and 1.5 % (w/v) NaCl. The cells were Gram-positive rods, forming single terminal endospores. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 45.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain HA6T formed a distinct lineage within the family Bacillaceae and was most closely related to Bacillus horti K13T and Bacillus smithii DSM 4216T, with sequence similarities of 91.8 and 93.1 %, respectively. On the basis of its physiological and molecular properties, strain HA6T should be placed in a novel genus and species, for which the name Caldalkalibacillus thermarum gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Caldalkalibacillus thermarum is strain HA6T (=CGMCC 1.4242T=JCM 13486T).

A novel actinomycete, strain ST1-08T, was isolated from the stem of Stemona sp. in Thailand. The taxonomic position of this isolate was determined by using a polyphasic approach. Strain ST1-08T contained meso-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan, and arabinose and galactose as diagnostic sugars of the whole-cell hydrolysate, which are typical properties of members of the genus Amycolatopsis. Strain ST1-08T grew at 15–40 °C, pH 6–9 and on 5 % (w/v) NaCl. Gelatin liquefaction, starch hydrolysis and skimmed milk peptonization were positive. The strain utilized l-arabinose, d-glucose, glycerol, myo-inositol, d-mannitol and l-rhamnose. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4) and the major cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0.The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, hydroxyl-phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylglycerol. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that the strain was closely related to Amycolatopsis pretoriensis JCM 12673T (98.99 %) and Amycolatopsis lexingtonensis JCM 12672T (98.87 %). The DNA G+C content of strain ST1-08T was 71.2 mol%. The DNA–DNA relatedness values among strain ST1-08T, A. pretoriensis JCM 12673T and A. lexingtonensis JCM 12672T were lower than 70 %, the cut-off level for assigning strains to the same species. On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, strain ST1-08T represents a novel species of the genus Amycolatopsis, for which the name Amycolatopsis stemonae is proposed. The type strain is ST1-08T( = JCM 30050T = PCU 339T = TISTR 2278T).

A Gram-reaction-positive, high DNA G+C content, non-motile actinobacterium, strain D7-21T, was isolated from dried bat dung inside a natural cave and its taxonomic status was examined by using a polyphasic approach. The 16S rRNA gene sequence study showed that the isolate belonged to the genus Rhodococcus and formed a cluster with Rhodococcus defluvii (98.98 % gene similarity), Rhodococcus equi (98.62 %) and Rhodococcus kunmingensis (97.66 %). Whole-cell hydrolysates contained meso-diaminopimelic acid, arabinose and galactose as the diagnostic diamino acid and sugars. MK-8(H2) was the predominant menaquinone. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside, an unknown phosphoglycolipid and an unknown glycolipid. Mycolic acids were present. The major fatty acids were C16 : 0, C18 : 1ω9c and 10-methyl C18 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 70.1 mol%. A battery of phenotypic features and DNA–DNA relatedness data support that strain D7-21T ( = KCTC 29469T = DSM 46727T) represents a novel species of the genus Rhodococcus, for which Rhodococcus antrifimi sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-positive filamentous bacterial strain that developed large campanulate sporangia at the ends of sporangiophores on substrate mycelium was isolated from bamboo forest soil in Thailand. According to the results of a polyphasic taxonomic study, our isolate had typical characteristics of members of the genus Actinoplanes . The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis also indicated that strain A-T 6646T belonged to the genus Actinoplanes , being most closely related to Actinoplanes liguriensis DSM 43865T (97.61 %) and Actinoplanes octamycinicus NBRC 14524T (97.52 %). The DNA–DNA relatedness values, which differentiate the new strain from the most closely related species, were significantly below 70 %. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The whole-cell sugars contained xylose and arabinose. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4). The diagnostic phospholipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. Following an evaluation of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic studies, the isolate is proposed to represent a novel species to be named Actinoplanes siamensis sp. nov. The type strain is A-T 6646T ( = BCC 46194T = NBRC 109076T).

Three novel Gram-negative, non-fermenting aerobic bacilli were isolated from human clinical samples. They shared more than 99.8 % of the 16S rRNA gene nucleotide positions. The strains were related to Ochrobactrum intermedium with about 97.48 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. In 16S rRNA gene-, dnaK- and rpoB-based phylogenies, the strains were grouped in a lineage that was distinct from other Ochrobactrum species in the family Brucellaceae. Fatty acid composition, polar lipids, quinone system, DNA–DNA relatedness, genome organization, and physiological and biochemical data differentiated these isolates from recognized species of the genus Ochrobactrum. The three clinical strains therefore represent a novel species within the genus Ochrobactrum, for which the name Ochrobactrum pseudintermedium sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is ADV31T (=CIP 109116T=DSM 17490T). The DNA G+C content of strain ADV31T was 54.5 mol%.

An actinomycete strain (CB1190T) was previously isolated from industrial sludge contaminated with 1,4-dioxane. The cells of this culture are Gram-positive and exhibit branching aerial and vegetative mycelium. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicates that the strain belongs to the genus Pseudonocardia, closely related to Pseudonocardia hydrocarbonoxydans, P. sulfidoxydans and P. halophobica. Physiological and biochemical characteristics of CB1190T are different from those of other known Pseudonocardia species. The novel organism described here is distinguished by its ability to grow on 1,4-dioxane, which is a probable human carcinogen. This culture can also grow on tetrahydrofuran, gasoline aromatics and several other toxic environmental contaminants. Strain CB1190T is capable of fixing dinitrogen. The predominant fatty acids are 16 : 0 iso, 16 : 1 iso cis9 and 17 : 1 iso cis9. The major phospholipid fatty acids are 16 : 0 iso, 16 : 0 10-Me and 17 : 0 10-Me. The peptidoglycan belongs to type A1γ, meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major menaquinone is MK-8 (H4). Mycolic acids are absent. The G+C content is 74 mol%. Based on morphological, physiological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic evidence, it is proposed that strain CB1190T (=ATCC 55486T=DSM 44775T) be classified as the type strain of a novel species, Pseudonocardia dioxanivorans sp. nov. Further studies with this organism will provide insights into metabolic pathways, responsible enzymes, kinetics and the fate of 1,4-dioxane in the environment.

Chemotaxonomic and molecular characteristics of the isolate matched those described for members of the genus Geodermatophilus . Cell-wall hydrolysates contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid and galactose as the diagnostic sugar. The major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and C17 : 1ω8c and the predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4). The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, hydroxyphosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, an unknown glycophospholipid and an unknown phospholipid. The DNA G+C content of the strain was 75.4 mol%. The 16S rRNA gene sequence identity with members of the genus Geodermatophilus was 94.2–98.7 %. Based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain Tü 6233T is proposed to represent a novel species, Geodermatophilus brasiliensis sp. nov., with the type strain Tü 6233T ( = DSM 44526T = CECT 8402T).
