A Gram-negative, coccoid-shaped bacterium, strain CC-CCM15-8T, was isolated from a rhizosphere soil sample of the plant Crossostephium chinense (L.) Makino (Seremban) from Budai Township, Chiayi County, Taiwan. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis clearly allocated strain CC-CCM15-8T to the Paracoccus cluster, showing highest similarities to the type strains of ‘Paracoccus beibuensis’ (98.8 %), Paracoccus homiensis (97.6 %), Paracoccus aestuarii (97.7 %) and Paracoccus zeaxanthinifaciens (97.7 %). The fatty acid profile, comprising C18 : 1ω7c as the major component and C10 : 0 3-OH as the characteristic hydroxylated fatty acid, supported the placement of strain CC-CCM15-8T within the genus Paracoccus . The polyamine pattern consisted of putrescine and spermidine as major components. Ubiqinone Q-10 was the major quinone type (95 %); ubiquinone Q-9 was also detected (5 %). The complex polar lipid profile consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, and unidentified phospholipids, lipids and glycolipids. Levels of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain CC-CCM15-8T and ‘P. beibuensis’ LMG 25871T, P. aestuarii DSM 19484T, P. zeaxanthinifaciens LMG 21993T and P. homiensis KACC 11518T were 24.9 % (34.8 %, reciprocal analysis), 15.7 % (17.5 %), 17.7 % (23.4 %) and 16.0 % (25.4 %), respectively. Physiological and biochemical test results allowed the phenotypic differentiation of strain CC-CCM15-8T from its closest relatives in the genus Paracoccus . Based on the data presented, it is concluded that strain CC-CCM15-8T represents a novel species of the genus Paracoccus , for which the name Paracoccus rhizosphaerae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CC-CCM15-8T ( = LMG 26205T = CCM 7904T).

An aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped bacterium (strain CC-ALB-1T) was isolated from the rhizosphere of Arabidopsis thaliana. Strain CC-ALB-1T was able to grow at 20–30 °C, pH 5.0–8.0 and with up to 1.0 % (w/v) NaCl. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain CC-ALB-1T had the highest sequence similarity to Chitinophaga ginsengisegetis Gsoil 040T (96.9 %) and Chitinophaga niastensis JS16-4T (96.7 %); lower levels of similarity (<97.0 %) were observed to strains of all other species of the genus Chitinophaga . The fatty acid profile consisted of iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, C15 : 1ω5c, C16 : 1ω5c and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c). The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids and five unidentified lipids. The predominant quinone system was menaquinone 7 (MK-7). The DNA G+C content was 53.4±0.4 mol%. Based on its phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic features, strain CC-ALB-1T is proposed to represent a novel species within the genus Chitinophaga , for which the name Chitinophaga taiwanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CC-ALB-1T ( = BCRC 80570T = JCM 18895T).

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, motile, short rod-shaped, catalase-negative and oxidase-positive bacterium, strain CAU 1568T, was isolated from marine sediment sand sampled at Sido Island in the Republic of Korea. The optimum conditions for growth were at 25–30 °C, at pH 6.5–8.5 and with 0–4.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain CAU 1568T was a member of the genus Photobacterium with high similarity to Photobacterium salinisoli JCM 30852T (97.7 %), Photobacterium halotolerans KACC 17089T (97.3 %) and Photobacterium galatheae LMG F28894T (97.3 %). The predominant cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1  ω6c and/or C16 : 1  ω7c) and summed feature 8 (C18 : 1  ω7c and/or C18 : 1  ω6c), with Q-8 as the major of isoprenoid quinone. The polar lipid profile consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerols, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phospholipid, two aminophospholipids and three unidentified lipids. The whole genome size of strain CAU 1568T was 4.8 Mb with 50.1 mol% G+C content; including 38 contigs and 4233 protein-coding genes. These taxonomic data support CAU 1568T as representing a novel Photobacterium species, for which the name Photobacterium arenosum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of this novel species is CAU 1568T (=KCTC 82404T=MCCC 1K05668T).

A Gram-positive, non-spore-forming bacterium (GW-12028T) of unknown origin showing filamentous growth and producing spherical sporangia was studied for its taxonomic allocation. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and subsequent similarity studies showed that strain GW-12028T belongs to the genus Streptosporangium , and is most closely related to Streptosporangium pseudovulgare DSM 43181T (99.9 %) and Streptosporangium nondiastaticum DSM 43848T (99.6 %) and more distantly related to Streptosporangium fragile IFO 14311T (98.4 %) and other species of the genus Streptosporangium (95.8 to 98 %). Chemotaxonomic analyses showed that the peptidoglycan diamino acid was meso-diaminopimelic acid. Whole-cell hydrolysates contained madurose as the diagnostic sugar and exhibited a quinone system that contained predominantly menaquinones with nine isoprenoic units in the side chain [MK-9, MK-9(H2), MK-9(H4)]. The polar lipid profile consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phoshatidylethanolamine, hydroxyphosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol-mannosides, four unidentified glycolipids, a phospholipid and an aminolipid. The polyamine pattern contained the major compounds spermine and spermidine. The major fatty acids were 10-methyl C17 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and C15 : 0. These chemotaxonomic traits are common to other species of the genus Streptosporangium . DNA–DNA hybridizations and physiological and biochemical tests in comparison with the type strains of the most closely related species, S. nondiastaticum and S. pseudovulgare , allowed genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of strain GW-12028T. This strain represents a novel species, for which we propose the name Streptosporangium sandarakinum sp. nov., with the type strain GW-12028T ( = LMG 27062T  = DSM 45763T).

A Gram-reaction-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile, red-pigmented bacterium, designated strain GSR3061T, was isolated from a water sample of the Mangyung estuary enclosed by the Saemangeum Embankment in JEOLlabuk-do of South Korea, and characterized using a polyphasic approach. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of strain GSR3061T indicated that the isolate belonged to the phylum Bacteroidetes and exhibited similarity levels of 94.7 % to Rufibacter tibetensis NRRL B-51285T, 92.4 % to Adhaeribacter terreus KACC 14257T and 91.9 % to Pontibacter korlensis KACC 15371T. Growth was observed at 15–40 °C and pH 6.5–9.5. The major cellular fatty acids of the novel strain were summed feature 4 (comprising iso-C17 : 1 I and/or anteiso-C17 : 1 B), iso-C15 : 0, C17 : 1ω6c and iso-C16 : 1 H. Flexirubin-type pigments were absent. The DNA G+C content of strain GSR3061T was 44.9 mol% and the major quinone was MK-7. The polar lipid profile consisted mainly of phosphatidylethanolamine; three unidentified lipids, two unknown aminolipids, two unknown phospholipids, an unknown aminophospholipid and an unknown glycolipid were also present. On the basis of the evidence presented, it is concluded that strain GSR3061T represents a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Nibribacter koreensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Nibribacter koreensis is GSR3061T ( = KACC 16450T = JCM 17917T).

A novel actinomycete, designated strain NEAU-FHS4T, was isolated from the root of black false hellebore (Veratrum nigrum L.). Strain NEAU-FHS4T formed single spores with smooth surfaces on substrate mycelium. The novel strain contained meso-diaminopimelic as amino acid of the peptidoglycan and xylose and glucose as whole-cell sugars. The predominant menaquinones were MK-10(H6) and MK-10(H8). Mycolic acids were not detected. The diagnostic phospholipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C16 : 0, C18 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. Phenotypic and chemotaxonomic analysis showed that the novel isolate had characteristics typical of members of the genus Plantactinospora . 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis also indicated that strain NEAU-FHS4T belonged to the genus Plantactinospora , with highest sequence similarities to Plantactinospora mayteni YIM 61359T (98.88 %) and Plantactinospora endophytica YIM 68255T (98.85 %). The results of DNA–DNA hybridization and physiological and biochemical tests allowed genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of the novel strain from the most closely related strains. Based on morphological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain NEAU-FHS4T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Plantactinospora , for which the name Plantactinospora veratri sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NEAU-FHS4T ( = CGMCC 4.7143T = DSM 46718T).

A Gram-stain-negative, short rod-shaped, non-flagellated, yellow bacterium, designated strain 5GHs7-2T, was isolated from a greenhouse soil sample in South Korea. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of strain 5GHs7-2T indicated that the isolate belonged to the family Chitinophagaceae , and exhibited the highest sequence similarities with members of the genera Terrimonas (89.2–92.6 %), Sediminibacterium (90.8–91.4 %) and Chitinophaga (89.2–91.7 %), Filimonas lacunae YT21T (91.7 %), members of the genus Segetibacter (90.2–91.6 %), Parasegetibacter luojiensis RHYL-37T (90.9 %) and Flavihumibacter petaseus T41T (91.2 %). Flexirubin-type pigments were present. The major cellular fatty acids of the novel strain were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 1 G. The polar lipid profile consisted of a large amount of phosphatidylethanolamine, and moderate and small amounts of several unknown aminolipids and lipids. The only respiratory quinone of strain 5GHs7-2T was MK-7, and the DNA G+C content was 47.6 mol%. On the basis of the evidence presented, it is concluded that strain 5GHs7-2T represents a novel species of a new genus in the family Chitinophagaceae , for which the name Parafilimonas terrae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is 5GHs7-2T ( = KACC 17343T = DSM 28286T).

A Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, yellow–orange-pigmented, motile, short rod-shaped, catalase-positive, oxidase-negative bacterium, strain MYL-8T, was isolated from wastewater of the Jin Tai Chemical Factory in Hefei, China. Strain MYL-8T grew optimally at 30 °C, in the absence of NaCl and at pH 7. Menaquinone 6 (MK-6) was the sole respiratory quinone and the major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH). The polar lipid profile was composed predominantly of unidentified polar lipids and aminolipids. Minor amounts of phosphatidylethanolamine and unidentified phospholipids were also detectable. The DNA G+C content of strain MYL-8T was 43.5 mol%. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain MYL-8T showed the highest similarity to that of Fluviicola taffensis RW 262T (97.03 %), followed by Wandonia haliotis Haldis-1-1T (92.05 %), Lishizhenia caseinilytica UST040201-001T (91.43 %) and Lishizhenia tianjinensis JCM 15141T (90.61 %). DNA–DNA relatedness between strain MYL-8T and F. taffensis RW 262T was 21.35±0.90 %. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, genomic and phylogenetic data, strain MYL-8T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Fluviicola , for which the name Fluviicola hefeinensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MYL-8T ( = KACC 16597T = CCTCC AB 2013168T).

A taxonomic study of a Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, non-motile, non-spore-forming, catalase-negative bacterium, strain YK43T, isolated from spent mushroom substrates stored in Nagano, Japan was performed. Growth was detected at 15–45 °C, pH 5.0–8.5, and 0–10 % (w/v) NaCl. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain YK43T was 43.6 mol%. The predominant fatty acids were C16 : 0, C18 : 1 ω9c and summed feature 8. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the type strains of Lactobacillus acidipiscis (sequence similarity, 97.6 %) and Lactobacillus pobuzihii (97.4 %) were most closely related to YK43T. The average nucleotide identities were 74.1 % between strain YK43T and L. acidipiscis DSM 15836T and 74.0 % between YK43T and L. pobuzihii E100301T. Based on a multilocus sequence analysis, comparative genomic analysis and a range of phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, strain YK43T represents a novel species of the genus Lactobacillus , for which the name Lactobacillus salitolerans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YK43T (=JCM 31331T = DSM 103433T).

Three pink-pigmented, aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped and facultatively methylotrophic strains were isolated from the phyllosphere of Trifolium repens and Cerastium holosteoides. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis support the affiliation of all strains to the genus Methylobacterium . The closest relatives of strains C34T and T5 were Methylobacterium gnaphalii 23eT (98.0 and 98.5 % sequence similarity, respectively) and Methylobacterium organophilum JCM 2833T (97.0 and 97.2 %, respectively). Strain TA73T showed the highest sequence similarities to Methylobacterium marchantiae JT1T and Methylobacterium bullatum F3.2T (both 97.9 %), followed by Methylobacterium phyllosphaerae CBMB27T and Methylobacterium brachiatum DSM 19569T (both 97.8 %), Methylobacterium cerastii C15T and Methylobacterium radiotolerans JCM 2831T (both 97.7 %). The major components in the fatty acid profiles were C18 : 1ω7c, C16 : 0 and one unknown fatty acid for strain TA73T and C18 : 1ω7c, C16 : 1ω7c/iso-C15 : 0 2-OH, C18 : 0 and C16 : 0 for strains C34T and T5. Physiological and biochemical analysis, including DNA–DNA hybridization, revealed clear differences between the investigated strains and their closest phylogenetic neighbours. DNA–DNA hybridization studies also showed high similarities between strains C34T and T5 (59.6–100 %). Therefore, the isolates represent two novel species within the genus Methylobacterium , for which the names Methylobacterium trifolii sp. nov. (type strain TA73T = LMG 25778T = CCM 7786T) and Methylobacterium thuringiense sp. nov. (type strain C34T = LMG 25777T = CCM 7787T) are proposed.

A new strain of the genus Kribbella , PIP 118T, was isolated from the leaf of an Australian native apricot tree (Pittosporum angustifolium), or Gumbi Gumbi in the indigenous language. This strain is an aerobic actinobacterium consisting of hyphae that fragment into short to elongated rod-like elements. Phylogenetic evaluation based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis placed this isolate as a member of the family Nocardioidaceae and most closely related to Kribbella antibiotica YIM 31530T (98.6 %) and Kribbella koreensis LM 161T (98.4 %). Chemotaxonomic data including cell wall components, major menaquinone and major fatty acids confirmed the affiliation of strain PIP 118T to the genus Kribbella . The results of the phylogenetic analysis, including physiological and biochemical studies in combination with DNA–DNA hybridization, allowed the genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of strain PIP 118T and members of the most closely related species with validly published names. The name proposed for the new species is Kribbella endophytica sp. nov. The type strain is PIP 118T ( = DSM 23718T = NRRL B-24812T).
