An aerobic, Gram-stain negative, pale, rod-shaped, nitrogen-fixing bacterial strain, DDT-3T, was isolated from dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane-contaminated soil in Liyang, PR China. Strain DDT-3T grew at temperatures ranging from 20 to 40 °C (optimum 30–37 °C) and a pH of between 5.0 and 10.0 (optimum pH 7.0–8.0). The G+C content of the total DNA was 70.1 mol%. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain DDT-3T showed the highest similarity to that of Pseudoxanthobacter soli CC4T (99.6 %), followed by Kaistia dalseonensis B6-8T (93.3 %), Kaistia soli 5YN9-8T (93.0 %) and Amorphus orientalis YIM D10T (93.0 %). Strain DDT-3T showed less than 92.6 % similarity with other species of the family Xanthobacteraceae . The major cellular fatty acids of strain DDT-3T were C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c (42.6 %), C16 : 0 (33.2 %) and C18 : 1ω7c (10.0 %). The only respiratory quinone was ubiquinone Q-10. The characteristic diamino acid of the peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major polar lipids were glycolipid, lipid, phosphatidylcholine, aminolipid, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol. The polyamine profile consisted of major amounts of putrescine (92.9 %) and minor amounts of spermidine (5.0 %) and spermine (2.1 %). These chemotaxonomic data support the affiliation of strain DDT-3T with the genus Pseudoxanthobacter . The DNA–DNA hybridization value between strain DDT-3T and strain CC4T was 47.8 % (reciprocal 44.3 %). DNA–DNA hybridization data as well as the biochemical and physiological characteristics strongly supported the genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of strain DDT-3T and strain CC4T. Strain DDT-3T, therefore, represents a novel species of the genus Pseudoxanthobacter , for which the name Pseudoxanthobacter liyangensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DDT-3T ( = KACC 16601T = CCTCC AB 2013167T).

An aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, bacterium, designated CLL3-39T was isolated from seashore sediment collected at a Tamarix chinensis forest in the Marine Ecology Special Reserve of Changyi, Shandong Province, PR China. Cells of strain CLL3-39T were olive-shaped and no flagellum was observed. Strain CLL3-39T grew optimally at 33 °C, pH 7.5 and salinity (sea salts) of 40 g l−1. The main fatty acids in the cell membrane of strain CLL3-39T comprised anteiso-C15 : 0 (22.3 %), iso-C15 : 0 (14.0 %), C16 : 0 (9.2 %) and summed feature 8 (contains C18 : 1  ω7c/C18 : 1  ω6c. 26. 7 %). The main polar lipids of CLL3-39T were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylcholine. The respiratory quinone was Q10. The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain CLL3-39T was 69.6 mol%. The average nucleotide identity between CLL3-39T and Pseudoroseicyclus aestuarii DB-4T was 74.7 % and the in silico DNA–DNA hybridization value was 20.1 %. Phylogenetically, strain CLL3-39T belonged to the genus Pseudoroseicyclus , branching with only one type strain P. aestuarii DB-4T with 96.3 % 16S rRNA gene similarity, followed by Limimaricola cinnabarinus LL-001T (95.2 %). Based on its phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, we propose strain CLL3-39T (=MCCC 1A14815T =KCTC 72665T) as a representative of a novel species in the genus Pseudoroseicyclus , for which the name Pseudoroseicyclus tamaricis sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-stain-positive, facultatively anaerobic, non-motile, endospore-forming and rod-shaped bacterium, occurring singly or in pairs, designated TB2019T, was isolated from environmental monitoring samples of corridor air collected at the Tianjin Institute for Drug Control, Tianjin Province (PR China). The isolate was able to grow at 15–40 °C (optimum growth at 37 °C), pH 6.0–8.0 (pH 7.0) and in the presence of 0–2% (w/v) NaCl (0% NaCl). Comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that TB2019T was most closely related to Paenibacillus typhae CGMCC 1.11012T (98.63%), Paenibacillus albidus Q4-3T (98.19%), Paenibacillus borealis DSM 13188T (97.55%), Paenibacillus helianthi P26ET (97.33%) and Paenibacillus odorifer DSM 15391T (97.19%). The digital DNA–DNA hybridization and the average nucleotide identity values between TB2019T and the five type strains mentioned above ranged from 20.7 to 25.0% and 75.2 to 81.3%, respectively, and the genomic DNA G+C content was 49.52 mol%. The diagnostic cell-wall sugar was ribose, and the diagnostic amino acid was meso-diaminopimelic acid. The polar lipids of TB2019T included diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, three unidentified aminophospholipids and one unidentified phospholipid. MK-7 was the predominant menaquinone, and anteiso-C15:0 (30.6%) was the major fatty acid. Based on the polyphasic taxonomic data, strain TB2019T represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus , for which the name Paenibacillus tianjinensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TB2019T (=CICC 25065T=JCM 34610T).

A novel Gram-stain-negative, horseshoe-shaped, non-motile bacterium, designated strain M12-11BT, was isolated from a marine sediment sample collected at a depth of 200 m from Kongsfjorden, Svalbard. The colony colour was orangish red due to the presence of carotenoids. Fatty acids were dominated by branched and unsaturated fatty acids (90.8 %), with a high abundance of iso-C15 : 0 (14.9 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (11.4 %), iso-C15 : 1 G (13.1 %), C15 : 1ω6c (5.4 %), C17 : 1ω6c (6.7 %), summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c; 9.3 %) and summed feature 9 (10-methyl C16 : 0 and/or iso-C17 : 1ω9c; 5.9 %). Strain M12-11BT contained MK-7 as the major respiratory quinone. The polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminolipid and three unidentified lipids. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, the type strains of Cyclobacterium amurskyense , Cyclobacterium marinum and Cyclobacterium lianum were most closely related to M12-11BT with sequence similarities of 98.2, 96.8 and 93.3 %, respectively. Other members of the family Cyclobacteriaceae had sequence similarities of <92.0 %. However, DNA–DNA hybridization with Cyclobacterium amurskyense KCTC 12363T and Cyclobacterium marinum DSM 745T showed relatedness values of only 24.5 and 32.5 % with respect to strain M12-11BT. Based on the results of DNA–DNA hybridization experiments and phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data, it appears that strain M12-11BT represents a novel species of the genus Cyclobacterium , for which the name Cyclobacterium qasimii sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is M12-11BT ( = KCTC 23011T = NBRC 106168T) and it has a DNA G+C content of 40.5 mol%.

A bacterial strain, designated YZGR15T, was isolated from the root of an annual halophyte Suaeda aralocaspica, collected from the southern edge of the Gurbantunggut desert, north-west PR China. Cells of the isolate were Gram-stain-positive, facultatively anaerobic, irregular rods. Growth occurred at 4–42 °C (optimum, 30–37 °C), at pH 6.0–9.0 (optimum, pH 7.0–7.5) and in the presence of 0–9 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 2–5 %). Phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain YZGR15T showed the highest sequence similarity to Sanguibacter keddieii (98.27 %), Sanguibacter antarcticus (98.20 %) and Sanguibacter inulinus (98.06 %). Results of genome analyses of strain YZGR15T indicated that the genome size was 3.16 Mb, with a genomic DNA G+C content of 71.9 mol%. Average nucleotide identity and digital DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain YZGR15Tand three type strains were in the range of 76.5–77.8 % and 20.0–22.2 %, respectively. Analysis of the cellular component of strain YZGR15T revealed that the primary fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0, C14 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 and the polar lipids included diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, three unidentified phospholipids and two unidentified glycolipids. The cell-wall characteristic amino acids were glutamic acid, alanine and an unknown amino acid. The whole-cell sugars for the strain were mannose, ribose, rhamnose, glucose and an unidentified sugar. The predominant respiratory quinone was MK-9(H4). Based on the results of genomic, phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic analyses, strain YZGR15T represents a novel species of the genus Sanguibacter , for which the name Sanguibacter suaedae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YZGR15T (=CGMCC 1.18691T=KCTC 49659T)

A facultatively alkaliphilic actinomycete strain, designated EGI 80088T, was isolated from a saline-alkali soil sample from Xinjiang province, north-west China, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic characterization. Strain EGI 80088T formed fragmented aerial hyphae and short spore chains, and rod-like spores aggregated at maturity. Whole-cell hydrolysates of the isolate contained ll-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid, and glucosamine, mannose, galactose, glucose and rhamnose as the marker sugars. The major fatty acids identified (>5 %) were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 4 (iso-C17 : 1I/anteiso-C17 : 1B), iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4). The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain EGI 80088T was 70.6 mol%. EGI 80088T showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to its closest phylogenetic neighbour Haloactinopolyspora alba YIM 93246T (98.5 %). The DNA–DNA relatedness value of the strain EGI 80088T and H. alba YIM 93246T was 59.3±5.2 %. On the basis of morphological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic characteristics and DNA–DNA hybridization data, strain EGI 80088T represents a novel species of the genus Haloactinopolyspora , for which the name Haloactinopolyspora alkaliphila sp. nov. (type strain EGI 80088T = BCRC 16946T = JCM 19128T) is proposed. The description of the genus Haloactinopolyspora has also been emended.

A novel Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped, brick red-pigmented bacterium, designated R-22-1 c-1T, was isolated from water from Baiyang Lake, Hebei Province, PR China. The strain was able to grow at 20–30 °C (optimum, 30 °C) and pH 6–7 (optimum, pH 6) in Reasoner’s 2A medium. 16S rRNA gene sequence and phylogenetic analyses of R-22-1 c-1T revealed closest relationships to Rufibacter immobilis MCC P1T (97.8 %), Rufibacter sediminis H-1T (97.9 %) and Rufibacter glacialis MDT1-10-3T (97.0 %), with other species of the genus Rufibacter showing less than 97.0 % sequence similarity. The predominant polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminophospholipids and three unidentified lipids. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, C15 : 1  ω6c, C17 : 1  ω6c, anteiso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1  ω7c and/or C16 : 1  ω6c) and summed feature 4 (iso-C17 : 1I and/or anteiso-C17 : 1B). The respiratory quinone was MK-7. The draft genome of R-22-1 c-1T was 5.6 Mbp in size, with a G+C content of 50.2 mol%. The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA–DNA hybridization relatedness values between strain R-22-1 c-1T and related type strains were R. immobilis MCC P1T (77.2 and 21.8 %), R. sediminis H-1T (81.6 and 21.4 %) and R. tibetensis 1351T (78.5 and 22.9 %). Based on these phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic results, strain R-22-1 c-1T represents a novel species in the genus Rufibacter , for which the name Rufibacter latericius sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is R-22-1 c-1T (=CGMCC 1.13570T=KCTC 62781T).

Daqu is a fermentation starter used in the production of Chinese liquors. A thermophilic bacterium, designated strain H-18T, was isolated from a high-temperature Daqu sample collected from the manufacturing process of a sesame-flavoured liquor in Shandong province, China. It was investigated in a taxonomic study using a polyphasic approach. Strain H-18T formed white aerial mycelium and greyish-yellow substrate mycelium, bearing single endospores on aerial and substrate hyphae or on unbranched short sporophores. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0. The predominant menaquinone was MK-7. These chemotaxonomic properties are similar to those of members of the genus Thermoactinomyces . The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 49.1 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons indicated that strain H-18T was most closely related to Thermoactinomyces vulgaris KCTC 9076T (96.42 % similarity), Thermoactinomyces intermedius KCTC 9646T (96.06 %), Laceyella putida KCTC 3666T (96.32 %) and Laceyella sacchari KCTC 9790T (95.55 %). Strain H-18T showed low DNA–DNA relatedness (40.8, 33.4, 20.0 and 14.4 %) with the above strains. Based on morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, DNA–DNA hybridization data and physiological properties, strain H-18T represents a novel species of the genus Thermoactinomyces , for which the name Thermoactinomyces daqus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is H-18T ( = DSM 45914T = CICC 10681T).

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming, aerobic bacterial strain, designated M327T, was isolated from the weathered surfaces of rock (mica schist) from Susong, Anhui Province, PR China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain M327T belonged to the genus Paenibacillus and was related most closely to Paenibacillus terrigena A35T (98.6 % similarity) and Paenibacillus selenitireducens ES3-24T (98.3 %). Strain M327T contained meso-diaminopimelic acid in the cell wall and MK-7 as the major menaquinone. The main fatty acids of strain M327T were anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The polar lipid profile contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, three unknown aminophospholipids and an unknown lipid. The total DNA G+C content of strain M327T was 48.6 mol%. Based on the low level of DNA–DNA relatedness (ranging from 26.6 to 33.1 %) to these type strains of species of the genus Paenibacillus and unique phenotypic characteristics, it is suggested that strain M327T represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus , for which the name Paenibacillus susongensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is M327T ( = CCTCC AB 2014058T = LMG 28236T = JCM 19951T).

Two novel Gram-stain-positive, irregular rod-shaped actinomycetes, S-1144T and 4053, were isolated from leaves of Lamiophlomis rotata on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, PR China. Cells were aerobic, catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. Colonies on Reasoner’s 2A agar were light yellow, circular, shiny, smooth and convex after 2 days of incubation. The isolates grew optimally at 25 °C, pH 7.5 and with 0 % (w/v) NaCl. The results of polyphasic analyses indicated that strain S-1144T belonged to the genus Nocardioides and its close phylogenetic neighbours (16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) were Nocardioides litoris DSM 103718T (98.4 %), Nocardioides rubriscoriae DSM 23986T (98.2%) and Nocardioides plantarum DSM 11054T (97.8 %). The genome of strain S-1144T showed less than 70 % digital DNA–DNA hybridization and < 95–96 % average nucleotide identity values to the above reference strains. The DNA G+C content of strain S-1144T was 73.5 mol%. MK-8(H4) was the predominant respiratory quinone (96.0 %) and llLL-2,6-diaminopimelic acid was the diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. The polar lipid profile of strain S-1144T consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, three unidentified phospholipids, one unidentified glycolipid and one unidentified lipid. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1  ω8c, C17 : 0 and C18 : 1  ω9c. On the basis of obtained data, strain S-1144T represented a novel species of the genus Nocardioides , for which the name Nocardioides dongxiaopingii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S-1144T (=CGMCC 4.7568T=JCM 33469T).

The taxonomic position of a novel aerobic, Gram-positive actinobacteria, designated strain RB5T, was determined using a polyphasic approach. The strain, isolated from the gut of the fungus-farming termite Macrotermes natalensis, showed morphological, physiological and chemotaxonomic properties typical of the genus Streptomyces . Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the closest phylogenetic neighbour of RB5T was Streptomyces polyrhachis DSM 42102T (98.87 %). DNA–DNA hybridization experiments between strain RB5T and S. polyrhachis DSM 42102T resulted in a value of 27.4 % (26.8 %). The cell wall of strain RB5T contained ll-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic amino acid. Mycolic acids and diagnostic sugars in whole-cell hydrolysates were not detected. The strain produced the following major phospholipids: diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol-mannoside and phosphatidylserine. The menaquinone profile showed hexa- and octahydrogenated menaquinones containing nine isoprene units [MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H8)]. The strain exhibited a fatty acid profile containing the following major fatty acids: 12-methyltridecanoic acid (iso-C14 : 0) 12-methyltetradecanoic acid (anteiso-C15 : 0), 13-methyltetradecanoic acid (iso-C15 : 0) and 14-methylpentadecanoic acid (iso-C16 : 0). Here, we propose a novel species of the genus Streptomyces – Streptomyces smaragdinus with the type strain RB5T (=VKM Ac-2839T=NRRL B65539T).
