A light-orange, aerobic bacterium, strain UST040201-001T, that degrades casein, gelatin and Tween 20, was isolated in February 2004 from a sand-filtered seawater sample from Port Shelter, Hong Kong SAR, China. The strain possessed menaquinone-6 and its 16S rRNA gene sequence shared only 90.1 % similarity with that of Brumimicrobium glaciale IC156T. Phylogenetic analysis showed that UST040201-001T formed a distinct lineage within the family Cryomorphaceae. Its ecophysiological and biochemical characteristics suggest that this strain represents a novel genus and species within the phylum Bacteroidetes. The name Lishizhenia caseinilytica gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Lishizhenia caseinilytica is UST040201-001T (=NRRL B-41434T=JCM 13821T).

A thermophilic, alkaliphilic and catalase-positive bacterium, designated strain HA6T, was isolated from a hot spring in China. The strain was aerobic and chemo-organotrophic and grew optimally at 60 °C, pH 8.5 and 1.5 % (w/v) NaCl. The cells were Gram-positive rods, forming single terminal endospores. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 45.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain HA6T formed a distinct lineage within the family Bacillaceae and was most closely related to Bacillus horti K13T and Bacillus smithii DSM 4216T, with sequence similarities of 91.8 and 93.1 %, respectively. On the basis of its physiological and molecular properties, strain HA6T should be placed in a novel genus and species, for which the name Caldalkalibacillus thermarum gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Caldalkalibacillus thermarum is strain HA6T (=CGMCC 1.4242T=JCM 13486T).

Abstract A Gram-negative, non-motile bacterium КММ 3653T was isolated from a sediment sample from the Sea of Japan seashore, Russia. On the basis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis the strain КММ 3653T was positioned within the family Rhodobacteraceae (class Alphaproteobacteria) forming a distinct lineage with the highest gene sequence similarities to the members of the genera Pacificibacter (95.2-94.7%) and Nioella (95.1-94.5%), respectively. According to the phylogenomic tree based on 400 conserved protein sequences, strain КММ 3653T was placed in the cluster comprising Vannielia litorea, Nioella nitratireducens, Litoreibacter albidus and Pseudoruegeria aquimaris as a separate lineage adjacent to Vannielia litorea KCTC 32083T. The average nucleotide identity values between strain КММ 3653T and Vannielia litorea KCTC 32083T, Nioella nitratireducens KCTC 32417T, Litoreibacter albidus KMM 3851T, and Pseudoruegeria aquimaris CECT 7680T were 71.1, 70.3, 69.6, and 71.0%, respectively. Strain КММ 3653T contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and C18:1ω7c as the major fatty acid followed by C16:0. The polar lipids were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified phospholipid, two unidentified aminolipids, and five unidentified lipids. The DNA G+C content of 61.8 % was calculated from the genome sequence. Based on the phylogenetic evidence and distinctive phenotypic characteristics, strain КММ 3653T is proposed to be classified as a novel genus and species Laetantesicola maris gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain of Laetantesicola maris gen. nov., sp. nov. is КММ 3653T (=KCTC 82575T).

A marine bacterium, strain Pol012T, was isolated from the Mediterranean sponge Axinella polypoides and subsequently characterized as belonging to subphylum 1 of the phylum ‘Verrucomicrobia’. Strain Pol012T was non-motile, Gram-negative, coccoid or rod-shaped and red in colour. The menaquinones MK-8 and MK-9 were detected. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 50.9 mol%. Growth was possible at temperatures between 8 and 30 °C and at pH values between 6.8 and 8.2. The closest cultured relative of strain Pol012T was Akkermansia muciniphila (83 % sequence similarity), while the closest environmental 16S rRNA gene sequence was the marine clone Arctic96BD-2 (95 % sequence similarity). Strain Pol012T is the first marine pure-culture representative of ‘Verrucomicrobia’ subphylum 1 and represents a novel genus and species, for which the name Rubritalea marina gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Pol012T (=DSM 177716T=CIP 108984T).

Strain 7SM30T , an aerobic marine, Gram-negative, heterotrophic and yellow- to orange-pigmented bacterium isolated from seawater from Castellón, Spain, was characterized using a polyphasic approach. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that the isolate represented a novel lineage within the family Flavobacteriaceae. The most closely related genera were Pseudozobellia, Zobellia and Kriegella. Cells of strain 7SM30T were non-motile rods that required sea salts for growth, used a wide variety of carbohydrates as sole carbon and energy sources and, unlike species of the genera Pseudozobellia and Zobellia, did not possess flexirubin-type pigment or hydrolyse agar. Strain 7SM30T contained MK6 as the sole respiratory quinone. Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) was the only identifiable polar lipid, although other lipids were also detected. The predominant cellular fatty acids were saturated C15 and monounsaturated C15. The DNA G+C content was around 40 mol%. On the basis of extensive phenotypic and phylogenetic comparative analysis, it is concluded that the new strain represents a novel genus and species, for which the name Euzebyella saccharophila gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain of the type species is 7SM30T (=CECT 7477T=KCTC 22655T).

An aerobic, Gram-negative, non-motile, yellow-pigmented bacterium, strain KMM 3046T, was isolated from a deep-sea brittle star from the Fiji Sea and was subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic analysis. Strain KMM 3046T grew at 5–32 °C and in the presence of 1–12 % (w/v) NaCl. It contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and 3-OH i16 : 0, 3-OH i17 : 0 and 3-OH a17 : 0 as the major fatty acids. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain KMM 3046T forms a distinct evolutionary lineage within the family Flavobacteriaceae (phylum Bacteroidetes), displaying 92.3–91.9 % sequence similarity with respect to Salegentibacter species. On the basis of the phenotypic and phylogenetic data, strain KMM 3046T represents a novel genus and species of the family Flavobacteriaceae, for which the name Marixanthomonas ophiurae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Marixanthomonas ophiurae is KMM 3046T (=NRIC 0684T=JCM 14121T).

ABSTRACT A new Ruminococcaceae bacterium, strain HV4-5-B5C, participating in the anaerobic digestion of grass, was isolated from a mesophilic two-stage laboratory-scale leach bed biogas system. The draft annotated genome sequence presented in this study and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated the affiliation of HV4-5-B5C with the family Ruminococcaceae outside recently described genera.

A hydrogenogenic, carboxydotrophic marine bacterium, strain KKC1T, was isolated from a sediment core sample taken from a submerged marine caldera. Cells were non-motile, Gram-stain-negative, 1.0–3.0 µm straight rods, often observed with round endospores. Strain KKC1T grew at 55–68 °C, pH 5.2–9.2 and 0.8–14 % (w/v) salinity. Optimum growth occurred at 65 °C, pH 7.0–7.5 and 2.46 % salinity with a doubling time of 3.7 h. The isolate grew chemolithotrophically, producing H2 from carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation with reduction of various electron acceptors, e.g. sulfite, thiosulfate, fumarate, ferric iron and AQDS (9,10-anthraquinone 2,6-disulfonate). KKC1T grew heterotrophically on pyruvate, lactate, fumarate, glucose, fructose and mannose with thiosulfate as an electron acceptor. When grown mixotrophically on CO and pyruvate, C16 : 0 constituted almost half of the total cellular fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 50.6 mol%. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of KKC1T was most closely related to those of members of the genus Moorella with similarity ranging from 91 to 89 %. Based on physiological and phylogenetic novelty, we propose the isolate as a representative of a new genus and novel species with the name Calderihabitans maritimus gen. nov., sp. nov.; the type strain of the type species is KKC1T ( = DSM 26464T = NBRC 109353T).

A Gram-negative, aerobic, saffron-coloured marine bacterium, designated HST1-43T, was isolated from beach sediment on the coast in Jeju, Korea, and its taxonomic status was established in a polyphasic study. 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses revealed that the isolate belonged to the family Flavobacteriaceae. The closest phylogenetic neighbours of strain HST1-43T were members of the genera Algibacter, Gaetbulibacter and Yeosuana, with levels of sequence similarity in the range 96.3–96.5 %. The isolate was non-motile and required sea salts or natural seawater for growth. The optimum temperature and pH ranges for growth were 25–30 °C and pH 6.1–8.1, respectively. MK-6 was the major menaquinone. The dominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, C18 : 0, C16 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The DNA G+C content was 36.2±0.4 mol%. On the basis of phylogenetic distance and phenotypic characteristics, the isolate is considered to represent a novel genus and species in the family Flavobacteriaceae, for which the name Tamlana crocina gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HST1-43T (=KCTC 12721T=JCM 14021T).

Strain Jip14T, a Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped, non-motile bacterium, was isolated from dried rice straw and characterized in order to determine its taxonomic position. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain Jip14T belongs to the family Sphingobacteriaceae, and the highest degree of sequence similarity was determined to be to Pedobacter saltans DSM 12145T (88.5 %), Pedobacter africanus DSM 12126T (87.6 %), Pedobacter heparinus DSM 2366T (87.1 %) and Pedobacter caeni LMG 22862T (86.9 %). Chemotaxonomic data revealed that strain Jip14T possesses menaquinone MK-7 and the predominant fatty acids C15 : 0 iso, C16 : 0, C16 : 0 10-methyl, C17 : 0 iso 3-OH and summed feature 3 (C15 : 0 iso 2-OH/C16 : 1 ω7c). The results of physiological and biochemical tests clearly demonstrated that strain Jip14T represents a distinct species. Based on these data, Jip14T should be classified within a novel genus and species, for which the name Parapedobacter koreensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Parapedobacter koreensis is Jip14T (=KCTC 12643T=LMG 23493T).

A Gram-reaction-positive, rod-shaped, non-motile, non-spore-forming bacterium (strain BX5-10T) was isolated from the soil of a ginseng field on Baekdu Mountain in Jilin district, China. The taxonomic position of this bacterium was determined in an investigation based on a polyphasic approach. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain BX5-10T was shown to belong to the family Nocardioidaceae and to be most closely related to Nocardioides plantarum NCIMB 12834T (96.5 % sequence similarity), Nocardioides dokdonensis KCTC 19309T (96.2 %) and Nocardioides fonticola NAA-13T (95.1 %). Strain BX5-10T was characterized chemotaxonomically as having ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid in its cell-wall peptidoglycan, MK-8(H4) as the predominant menaquinone and C18 : 1ω9c, C16 : 0 and C17 : 1ω8c as its major fatty acids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 70.3 mol%. The novel strain could be differentiated genotypically and phenotypically from all recognized species of the genus Nocardioides. Based on the results of the phylogenetic analyses and the genotypic and phenotypic data, a novel species, Nocardioides ginsengagri sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is BX5-10T ( = KCTC 19467T = DSM 21362T).
