The serotypes and molecular clones of penicillin-nonsusceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae (PNSP) responsible for invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) and discharging ears in metropolitan New South Wales were characterized to form a baseline prior to introduction of the heptavalent conjugate pneumococcal vaccine in Australia. Pneumococci isolated between 1 July 2000 and 30 June 2003 in Sydney from children <15 years were tested for antibiotic susceptibilities and serotyped. Penicillin-nonsusceptible pneumococci were typed by multilocus sequence typing and BOX PCR. During this period, 97 (13.9 %) of 698 pneumococci from IPD that were serotyped were penicillin-nonsusceptible. Of 607 pneumococci from discharging ears, 157 (26.1 %) were penicillin-nonsusceptible. Serotype 14 was the predominant serotype responsible for IPD and serotype 19F predominated from discharging ears. The heptavalent vaccine serotypes accounted for 613 (87.8 %) of all invasive isolates and 420 (69.8 %) of all isolates from discharging ears. Representatives of the major international clones were present among the PNSP. The majority of serotypes and clones that showed penicillin-nonsusceptibility are present within the vaccine. Serotype switching was also noted to have occurred prior to introduction of the vaccine. This study provides a characterization of the pneumococcal serotypes associated with IPD and discharging ears that will be useful for detecting potential selective effects of the vaccine. This surveillance should be continued, as it will be important to monitor the frequency and distribution of serotypes in the post-vaccine era.

This paper describes in brief the findings of a research project undertaken by the Institute for Sustainable Futures (ISF) at the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia. The research was commissioned by and undertaken on behalf of the New South Wales (NSW) Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (DECCW). The aim of the project was to investigate current practices of environmental and sustainability education and engagement within local government in NSW. The research was commissioned by DECCW as the preliminary phase of a larger project that the department is planning to undertake, commencing in 2010.

AbstractWorld Youth Day 2008 was held in Sydney, Australia in July 2008. New South Wales (NSW) Health, the government health provider in Australia's most populous state, worked with partner agencies to provide medical services via on-site medical units at key event venues.A post-event review of medical records from the on-site medical units indicated 465 patient presentations, comprised largely of infectious respiratory symptoms and general health concerns of a primary care nature. This year the Journal of Philosophy in Schools kicked off with a special issue, volume 5 number 1, comprising seven invited articles that addressed the foundational question of why philosophy should be taught in schools. Deftly guest edited by Michael Hand from the University of Birmingham, the papers make a cumulative and convincing argument for why philosophy should be taught across the pre-tertiary educational curriculum. The issue makes a strong argument that may be used to defend and propagate the philosophy in schools movement. We hope it will be used pragmatically, politically, and persuasively by our readers to raise awareness and further the cause of teaching philosophy to young people and extending philosophy beyond the Academy.This issue honours one person who has dedicated his career to furthering this cause. Philip Cam is an international authority on philosophy in schools who has been a pioneer in introducing philosophy and ethics into schools in Australia. Phil completed his MA in Philosophy at the University of Adelaide and his DPhil at the University of Oxford. He is Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Humanities and Languages at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, where he has been for over 30 years. In the various positions Phil has held at UNSW, in the Philosophy in Schools Association for NSW, and for the Federation of Australasian Philosophy in Schools Associations (FAPSA), he has worked hard, inspired and taught many, and contributed much to the shape of philosophy in schools across Australasia. This year, a little bird informed the JPS that Phil was retiring and turning 70, even while he continues to be productive, publishing, presenting and assisting with philosophy in schools projects and events. The opportunity thus presented itself to publish a collection of papers critically engaged with Cam’s work. Two further articles are included in this issue.
