Exploitation of X-ray circular polarized beams to study forbidden Bragg reflections and new information that could be obtained in these experiments are discussed. It is shown that the intensities of such reflections can be different for the right- and left-circular polarizations (i.e. exhibiting circular dichroism) even for the dipole–dipole resonant transitions involved in the scattering process. This difference can be observed only in crystals having no center of inversion. Here, this approach is used to study helicity-dependent resonant diffraction in copper metaborate CuB2O4 single crystal, which is non-centrosymmetric but achiral. Nonetheless, a strong circular dichroism has been observed for hh0 forbidden reflections in the vicinity of the Cu K-edge. This effect is shown to originate from dipolar transitions in Cu atoms occupying the 8(d) Wyckoff position only.

We found, by circular dichroism and Raman spectroscopy measurements, that the secondary structure of the native ovalbumin and of its heat-stable form, called S-ovalbumin, is a probe of the structural differences between the two proteins. Small angle X-ray scattering and circular dichroism measurements performed on the two proteins under denaturing conditions, with different concentrations of guanidine hydrochloride, show the changes of the tertiary and secondary structure and a different pathway in the unfolding process. These experimental data confirm that the conversion of native ovalbumin into S-ovalbumin is irreversible and reveal that the response of the two proteins to the same chemical environment is different

ABSTRACTMagnetic x-ray circular dichroism in x-ray absorption has been used to investigate the ternary multilayer system, Fe Co Pt. Samples were prepared by planar magnetron sputter deposition and carefully characterized, using a variety of techniques such as grazing-incidence and high-angle x-ray scattering, Auger depth profiling and cross-section transmission electron microscopy. As previously reported, the Fe9.5Å Pt9.5Å exhibits a large dichroism in the Fe 2p absorption. Interestingly while the Co9.5Å Pt9.5Å has no measurable dichroism, the Fe4.7Å Co4.7Å Pt9.5Å sample has a dichroism at both the Fe 2p and Co 2p absorption edges. These and other results will be compared to slab calculation predictions. Possible explanations will be discussed.
