Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between intellectual capital (IC) performance (value-added intellectual coefficient (VAIC)) and company characteristics with IC disclosure (ICD) in Malaysian listed companies. Design/methodology/approach – Sample of the study is 68 biggest Malaysian companies listed in Malaysian Stock Exchange based on market capitalization in year 2006. The paper follows the classification of ICD by Huang et al. (2007), with three broad IC categories in 45 items. Content analysis was used to collect the IC information from the annual reports. Regression analysis was conducted for VAIC and its components. Log linear analysis was also conducted to cater the possible misspecification in the model. Findings – Results of the study show that VAIC is negatively related to ICD. Further classification of VAIC shows that intellectual capital efficiency and human capital efficiency are negatively related to ICD whilst structural capital efficiency is not related to ICD. Company size and leverage are found to be positively related to ICD. Research limitations/implications – Negative association between VAIC and ICD suggests that companies reduce ICD for competitive advantage reason which supports the proprietary cost theory. The findings of the study may provide some evidence to regulators to enhance the reporting practices of IC for the benefits of users of financial reporting in making relevant decisions. The focus should be given on the reporting of human capital items. Originality/value – This is the first paper to use IC framework by Huang et al. (2007). Consistency of findings with other studies using different IC framework can be compared for the choice of IC framework in future studies.

PurposeThe prime intention of this study is to examine the influence of intellectual capital (IC) on the financial performance of Indian companies listed on Standard and Poor Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitive Index (BSE SENSEX).Design/methodology/approachThe study employs the data of 30 most significant and most prominent companies of India listed on BSE SENSEX for 10 years from 2009–2010 to 2018–2019. Value Added Intellectual Coefficient (VAICTM) methodology developed by Pulic (2000) was employed for measuring the efficiency of the IC.FindingsThe efficiency of IC is substantially and positively associated with the financial performance of the Indian companies as measured by return on assets (ROA), market-to-book (MB) ratio and return on equity (ROE). Amongst the three dimensions of VAIC, capital employed efficiency (CEE) was the most vital element in contributing to the firm financial performance, followed by human capital efficiency (HCE). Structural capital efficiency (SCE) only helps in enhancing the ROA of Indian firms.Research limitations/implicationsThe study results are only restricted to the 30 companies of India listed on S&P BSE SENSEX Index. Thus generalization of the result needs especial caution.Originality/valueThe study fills the void in the current literature of IC and business performance and extends the understanding of their relationship by providing empirical evidence.

Intellectual capital (IC) has gained recognition in enhancing the firms’ value and gain competitive advantage in the developed world. Thus, it is imperative for all stakeholders to have an understanding of its impact on firms’ profitability. The present study aims to analyse the impact of intellectual capital on firms’ profitability of Indian pharmaceutical companies listed in National Stock Exchange (NSE-500) for the time period of 10 years (i.e. 2009–2018). The paper has used modified version of Pulic’s Value Added Intellectual Coefficient, i.e., M-VAIC as a proxy to measure intellectual capital and firms’ profitability as represented by ROA, ROE and EBITDA. In line to analyse the effectiveness, a balanced panel data regression technique has been used. The results of the paper indicate a significant relationship between intellectual capital and firms’ profitability. Also, it is found that human capital, relational capital and physical capital have a significant role in increasing the profitability of the firm. The analysis would help the administration and management of pharmaceutical companies in the composition and organization of intellectual capital, stakeholders in the decisions related to investment and financial specialist for enhancing intellectual capital efficiency and value creation for the firm. Human capital is found to be having a positively significant impact on firms’ profitability; their inclusion and management are suggested for the companies.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to empirically examine the effect of intangible resources, i.e. intellectual capital (IC) on financial performance of 64 Islamic financial institutions (IFIs) operating in 18 different countries for the period 2007-2011, while controlling for firm-specific variables, namely, bank size, level of risk, listing status, and firm complexity. Design/methodology/approach The required data to calculate different constituents of IC are derived from Bankscope database. Value Added Intellectual Coefficient (VAIC) methodology devised by Pulic is used to determine the impact of IC on financial performance of IFIs. Findings Results indicate a significant positive relationship between VAIC and accounting performance based on return on assets (ROA). The results further indicate a significant positive relationship between accounting performance and capital employed efficiency (CEE) and human capital efficiency (HCE), but no significant relationship with regards to structural capital efficiency. Overall, the results suggest that value creation capability of IFIs is highly influenced by HCE and CEE. Research limitations/implications The main limitation of the present study lies in its methodological tool, the VAIC methodology, which has been criticized by some researchers as not really measuring IC. Despite the inherent limitation of the VAIC methodology which relies on secondary data published in annual reports, it is still considered by some researchers as one of the best available tool to measure firms’ IC in the absence of access to detailed internal information on IC. Practical implications The findings may serve as a useful input for Islamic bankers in managing their investments in IC within their institutions. Originality/value The main contribution of this paper is to use a previously little-studied area, Islamic banking and finance, to identify the effect of intellectual capital on performance.


With the eminence of the era of knowledge-based economies, the concept of intellectual capital (IC) is of vital importance for organisations to survive in these vigorous environments. As one of the knowledge intensive sectors, there is no exception to banking institutions in enhancing their intellectual capital efficiency to the forefront especially for Islamic banks (IBs) that have to compete with the firmlyestablished conventional banks. Accordingly, this study intends to measure the relationship between intellectual capital efficiency and banks’ performance. In total, 59 Islamic banks are selected and their audited annual reports are compiled from the banks’ websites respectively from year 2006-2017. Value-added intellectual coefficient (VAIC) are applied in measuring IC efficiency. The findings provide empirical evidences of positive relationship between IC efficiency and banks performance, nonetheless, when decomposes into human capital efficiency (HCE), structural capital efficiency (SCE) and capital employed efficiency (CEE), only human capital efficiency shows significant positive relationship with performance of the banks while the other two components show significant negative linkage with bank performance. Furthermore, due to criticisms towards VAIC method, this study using modified value-added intellectual capital coefficient (MVAIC) and found that MVAIC has significant positive relationship with bank performance while relational capital as additional variable in MVAIC regression model has no significant effect with bank performance. This study provides better insights on the importance of utilisation of IC by banking institutions particularly for Islamic banks.

The objective of this study are to analyze the impact of intellectual capital (HumanCapital, Structure Capital and Physical Capital) on company’s financial performance Return on Assets (ROA) dan Return On Equity (ROE). This research used banking company data that listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) 2011-2012. The model that used to measure intellectual capital was Pulic model agregatly-using Value Added Intellectual Coefficient (VAIC™) or separately-using Human Capital Efficiency (HCE), Structure Capital Efficiency (SCE), and Physical Capital/ Capital Employed Efficiency (CEE). The result show: (1) Human Capital Efficiency (HCE) not significant  impact on ROA, (2) Human Capital Efficiency (HCE) not significant impact on ROE, (3) Structure Capital Efficiency (SCE) not significant impact on ROA, (4) Structure Capital Efficiency (SCE) negative impact on ROE (5) Physical Capital/Capital Employed Efficiency (CEE) has a positive significant impact on ROA, (6) Physical Capital/Capital Employed Efficiency (CEE) has a positive significant impact on ROE

This paper aims at examining the effect of the Value Added by Intellectual Capital (VAIC) in terms of its three components: capital employed efficiency, human capital efficiency, and structure capital efficiency on the financial performance of commercial banks listed on the Amman Stock Exchange for the period 2010–2018.Value Added of Intellectual Capital (VAIC) model was used to measure the intellectual capital while Tobin’s Q ratio was used as an indicator of bank financial performance. The study has used parametric techniques like multiple linear regression and correlation coefficient, and other statistical methods to investigate its hypothesis. It was found that only human capital efficiency and capital employed efficiency had impacts on the banks’ financial performance. These results emphasize the importance of using the VAIC model to evaluate the financial performance of these banks, as well as encourage banks to make further investments in intellectual capital’s components, and concentrate on human resources to build up their knowledge, skills and capabilities, because of their greatest role in value creation.

Since the financial sector reforms took place in the last two decades, Banks in Tanzania have continued to play the major role in reshaping the economy of the nation. With the emergence of knowledge based economy many firm have changed their way of doing business instead of relying more on physical capital they have shifted to intellectual capital. This is no exception for the banks operating in developing counties Tanzania included. Many studies have been done in the area of intellectual capital and its contribution to the value of the firm. This study sets out to extend the evidence by investigating the intellectual capital of banks operating in Tanzania for the period of four years from 2010 to 2013. Annual reports, especially the profit and loss accounts and balance sheets of the selected banks have been used to obtain the data. The study uses Value Added Intellectual Capital model (VAICTM) in determining intellectual capital and its three major components like Human Capital Efficiency (HCE) Structural capital efficiency (SCE) and Capital Employed Efficiency (CEE). The results revealed that Intellectual capital has a positive relationship with financial performance of banks operating in Tanzania and also when the VAICTM was divided into its three components it was discovered that the financial performance is positively related to Human capital efficiency and Capital employed efficiency but is negatively related to Structural capital efficiency.

Purpose This study aims to examine the factors affecting intellectual capital disclosure (ICD), especially in the agriculture and mining sectors in Indonesia and Thailand. Additionally, this study discusses the difference in ICD levels between Indonesia and Thailand. Design/methodology/approach The sample used is companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange and Stock Exchange of Thailand from 2013 to 2017. The method used is a content analysis of 380 annual reports (150 from Thailand and 230 from Indonesia). This study uses a panel regression model. Variables tested are firm size, market shares, minority shareholders, profitability, leverage and the focus on ICD components such as human capital disclosure, structural capital disclosure and relational capital disclosure. Findings IC disclosures in financial statements are generally oriented to past events and focus more on the human capital component. Overall, ICDs in Thailand are more qualified than in Indonesia. The findings support the stakeholder and legitimacy theories. It was found that the greater the company’s resources, the higher the quality of disclosure of all intellectual capital (IC) components. Conversely, when associated with the position in the market, companies reduce the disclosures. As the company has gained the government’s legitimacy, management’s passion for revealing more about its ICD is diminishing. Research limitations/implications This study focuses on the agriculture and mining sectors in Indonesia and Thailand. The annual report is the primary medium to observe IC in qualitative and quantitative ways, yet firms would use other means to disclose their IC. This study deploys the content analysis method, in which the determination of scores is based on the researchers’ judgment. Originality/value This study contributes to the ICD-related literature by focusing on the agriculture and mining industries and multinational scopes. The ICD valuation is extended to the quality of disclosures, in which numerical and monetary figures also support the disclosures. This study also examined minority shareholders’ role in ICD quality, which is infrequent in ICD literature.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to establish the relationship between intellectual capital (IC) and employees' productivity (EP) in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.Design/methodology/approachThe value-added intellectual coefficient (VAIC) is used to measure IC performance in 198 firms listed in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain from 2012 to 2014. The pooled-corrected estimation technique is used to estimate a panel regression model with EP as the dependent variable. Firm size and sectors are controlled for in the regression analysis. The independent variable (IC) has been measured using human capital efficiency (HCE), structural capital efficiency and capital employed efficiency (CEE) in order to measure the value of IC.FindingsBased on the VAIC, the authors found that the values of IC investments are mostly generated from investments in human capital. The results of the panel-corrected ordinary least square indicate that VAIC and its individual components are positive and significantly related to variations in employees' productivity. HCE contributed the highest and CEE contributed lowest VAIC.Originality/valueThe originality of this paper is to show the importance of investment in the human capital as a key contributor of firm's performance. Hence, this study encourages firm's leaders and management in the GCC to invest and focus their management/leadership styles on human capital to achieve their goals. To the best of the knowledge of the coauthors, this is the first study which empirically examines the relationship between IC and EP in the GCC region.

PurposeThe question of whether intellectual capital (IC) is beneficial to firm performance is debatable because of the diverse effects of IC and its components on firm performance. Building on the concept of pay–performance relation, this study aims to provide new insights into how changes in IC affect changes in firm performance.Design/methodology/approachData envelopment analysis is employed to measure firm performance, and value-added intellectual coefficient (VAIC™) is selected to evaluate the IC and its components, namely human capital efficiency (HCE), structural capital efficiency (SCE), and capital employed efficiency (CEE). Ordinary least squares regression is applied to study the relationship between changes in IC and changes in firm performance using 6,408 firm-year observations of electronics companies listed in Taiwan from 2006 to 2017.FindingsEmpirical results suggest that IC efficiency and CEE significantly and negatively affect firm performance, thereby suggesting a contradictory common sense with the resource-based view on the beneficial effects of IC. However, changes in IC efficiency and HCE are significantly and positively related to changes in firm performance, including changes in firm efficiency and sales growth.Practical implicationsThis study suggests that managers should continuously pay attention to adjusting their IC, especially human capital (HC) for better decisions that help grow firm performance. Moreover, investors can grasp how sensitive firm performance is to IC.Originality/valueThis study argues the relationship between IC and firm performance in the same vein as a pay-for-performance link, suggesting that future studies should account for increases or decreases in IC.
