PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between engaging leadership and open conflict norms in teams, with work engagement. A mediating role of basic needs satisfaction between these relations is proposed based on self-determination theory.Design/methodology/approachStructural equation modeling was used with 133 employees who rated their leader, their team and their own basic need satisfaction and engagement to analyze the direct and indirect effects simultaneously.FindingsThe analysis confirmed that both engaging leadership and open conflict norms had an indirect effect on work engagement through basic needs satisfaction. Furthermore, engaging leadership was positively related with open conflict norms.Research limitations/implicationsThe current study adds to the validation of engaging leadership as it confirms that engaging leaders strengthen work engagement through basic need satisfaction. Furthermore, it shows that not only the leader is important, but the team can impact their well-being through the creation of other social resources as open conflict norms.Originality/valueThis paper provides evidence that not only leaders are important to increase work engagement through basic needs satisfaction but also other social resources, such as conflict management. This offers a brand new perspective and opportunities on how to increase work engagement using social resources as conflict management.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to report a study in which central propositions from the job demands-resources (JD-R) theory and self-determination theory (SDT) are used to examine the antecedents of performance during practical internships. The central hypothesis of this study was that job resources foster performance through basic need satisfaction and work engagement (sequential mediation).Design/methodology/approachAn empirical multi-source study among Dutch interns and their supervisors in various occupational sectors. The interns reported their level of resources, basic needs satisfaction and work engagement, whereas supervisors rated interns’ task performance (n=1,188 unique supervisor–intern dyads).FindingsThis study integrates insights of the JD-R theory – by examining the relations between job resources, work engagement and performance – with a central premise of the SDT – which maintains that basic need satisfaction is the fundamental process through which employees’ optimal functioning can be understood. The outcomes of the path analyses revealed that satisfaction of needs indeed accounted for the relationship between job resources and work engagement as supposed in the SDT (Deci and Ryan, 2000). Further, the sequential mediated relation between job resources and performance through basic need satisfaction and work engagement corroborates the JD-R theory (Bakker and Demerouti, 2014).Originality/valueAs far as the authors know, this is the first study that examined the sequential mediation from job resources to performance via basic need satisfaction and work engagement, among a large sample of intern–supervisor dyads, including the objective performance rating of their (internship) supervisors.

Based on a study of 132 elementary school students in grade IV-VI found that there is significant parental structure effect on basic need satisfaction (R2 = 0,277, F = 49,704, and ρ = 0,000). Parental structure also has a significant influence on the three components of basic need satisfaction, namely need for autonomy (ρ = 0,000, F = 22,495), need for competence (ρ = 0,000, F = 45,106) and need for relatedness (ρ = 0,000, F = 21,091). Suggestions for research that will conduct further research are expected to undertake research on the influence of parental structures on basic need satisfaction using a wider coverage of respondents. In addition, the researcher proposes to the school to make a psychoeducation program with material related to the role of parental structures on the basic needs of satisfaction.

The link between basic psychological needs satisfaction of employees and their engagement in other administrative organizations is relatively established. However, there is a paucity of research findings regarding this link in the educational organizations in general, and vocational education in particular. This research, therefore, determined the relations between work-related basic need satisfaction (WBNS), work engagement, and work motivation in aspects of vocational education. The participants were 299 business and technical education lecturers of the vocational education programme in Nigeria universities. The research utilized three scales, which were embedded in a questionnaire for data collection. The face and construct validity of the scales were established. Data analyses were performed with correlation, and regression of paths by applying 2000 re-samples bias-corrected (BC) bootstrapping method. The result revealed a significant positive WBNS-motivation, WBNS-engagement, and motivation-engagement relations. However, work motivation could not mediate the link in the research model. PurposeHow to foster voice behavior has always been a hot topic in organizational research; however, the mechanism through which performing decent work affects employee voice behavior remains to be fully understood. To address this deficiency, the current study investigates how basic need satisfaction may relate to perceived decent work and voice behavior and the moderating role of gender. Our research draws upon self-determination theory and social information processing theory.Design/methodology/approachThe theoretical model was tested using two-wave investigation data collected from a sample of 349 employees and 85 supervisors in Southwest China.FindingsDecent work perception was positively related to voice behavior, and this relationship was partially mediated by basic need satisfaction. In addition, the relationship between decent work perception and basic need satisfaction as well as the indirect effect of decent work perception on voice behavior via basic need satisfaction was stronger for men than for women.Originality/valueThis study highlights the pivotal roles of basic need satisfaction and gender in the consequences of decent work perception in the workplace. The authors provide new insights into the relationship between decent work perception and voice behavior and inspire scholars to elucidate other explanatory mechanisms in this link.

Relationship satisfaction may be considered as a general assessment based on the emotional experience in marital relationships. The results of theoretical analysis show that the main and direct reason of negative emotions in relationships is frustration of psychological needs. Satisfaction of these needs in spouses’ life is connected with individual differences in attachment and love. Based on these ideas we suggested hypothesis that connection of attachment style with relationship satisfaction is explained by frustration of basic psychological needs of people with insecure attachment style. To check this hypothesis we tested 68 couples, 30 of them were married and 38 cohabited. Relationship satisfaction measured using RAS by Hendrick highly correlated with basic needs satisfaction (measured using Need satisfaction scale by La Guardia) and attachment style (measured using the Russian version of ECR by Sabel'nikova and Kashirskii). The results of structural equation modeling led to the conclusion that negative association of anxious attachment with relationship satisfaction was totally explained by frustration of basic needs (first of all, need for relatedness) while the negative effect of avoidant attachment was accounted for frustration partially. Also it was shown that people with avoidant attachment experience more frustration of need for autonomy in marital relationships. The present study investigated the transcontextual process of motivation in sport injury prevention. We examined whether general causality orientation, perceived autonomy support from coaches (PAS), self-determined motivation (SD-Mtv), and basic need satisfaction in a sport context predicted SD-Mtv, beliefs, and adherence with respect to sport injury prevention. Elite athletes (N = 533) completed self-report measures of the predictors (Week 1) and the dependent variables (Week 2). Variance-based structural equation modeling supported hypotheses: SD-Mtv in a sport context was significantly predicted by PAS and basic need satisfaction and was positively associated with SD-Mtv for sport injury prevention when controlling for general causality orientation. SD-Mtv for sport injury prevention was a significant predictor of adherence to injury-preventive behaviors and beliefs regarding safety in sport. In conclusion, the transcontextual mechanism of motivation may explain the process by which distal motivational factors in sport direct the formation of proximal motivation, beliefs, and behaviors of sport injury prevention.

Background: The aim was to examine the mediating role of basic psychological needs and job satisfaction in the relationship between the gender effect on health problems and psychological well-being for health professionals in Europe in 2015. Methods: Two multiple partial mediation analyses were conducted in order to test the partial mediation of both basic needs and job satisfaction, with gender as the independent variable and health problems or well-being, respectively, as the dependent variables, with a sample of health professionals. Results: Women reported lower psychological well-being and more health problems than men. The total effect of gender on both well-being and health problems was found to be significant. Regarding multiple mediation analyses: (a) the effect of gender on well-being was fully mediated by global basic need satisfaction and job satisfaction, such that gender did not present a significant direct effect and (b) the effect of gender on health problems was partially mediated by global basic need satisfaction and job satisfaction, such that the direct effect remained significant. Conclusions: The fulfillment of basic needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, as postulated within self-determination theory, was hypothesized to play a mediating role in the relationship between gender and well-being. Since significant gender differences in basic need satisfaction were observed, such a mediator should be controlled in order to achieve a significant relationship between gender and well-being when basic needs comes into play. The current study adds to the research emphasizing the need for satisfaction as a promising mechanism underlying for female health professionals’ well-being.
