PurposeFor large projects, project segmentation and planning the size of contract packages in construction bids is a complex and critical issue. Due to the nature of construction projects, which frequently have large budgets, long durations and many activities with complex procedures, project segmentation involves complicated decision-making. To fill this gap, this study aims to develop an integrated model for planning project segmentation.Design/methodology/approachThe proposed model integrates a simulation and multiple attribute decision-making method. The simulation is used to evaluate the bidding outcome of various project segmentations. The owner can then determine the bid-price behavior of contractors in response to varying work package sizes. The multiple attribute decision-making method is used to select the optimal segmentation solution from the simulated scenarios.FindingsThe proposed model is applied to a large road preservation project in Indonesia and incorporates bid participants and market conditions. The model provides seven scenarios for segmentation. The range of scenarios captures increasing competitiveness in the construction with the average bid price becoming gradually more beneficial for the owner. The model also utilizes a multiple attribute decision-making method to select the optimum scenario for the owner.Originality/valueThis study presents an applicable model for project segmentation that is useful for both project owners and contractors. By utilizing the proposed model, a project owner can segment a large project into smaller contract packages to create improved project pricing.

We investigate the multiple attribute decision making problems for evaluating the urban tourism management efficiency with uncertain linguistic information. We utilize the uncertain linguistic weighted averaging (ULWA) operator to aggregate the uncertain linguistic information corresponding to each alternative and get the overall value of the alternatives and, then rank the alternatives and select the most desirable one(s). Finally, a numerical example for evaluating the urban tourism management efficiency with uncertain linguistic information is used to illustrate the proposed model.

Purpose Corporate social responsibility has gradually become an essential enterprise responsibility under stakeholders’ expectations. Employee care strategies involve both qualitative and quantitative factors and are receiving special attention with the advent of the information age. In previous studies, a company’s policy of employee care may not fit with the needs of the employees. Consequently, the purpose of this paper is to investigate enterprises’ employee care from the employee’s perspective by adopting a hybrid multiple attribute decision making (MADM) model. Design/methodology/approach This study is based on 159 interviews with senior employees and/or department managers using a survey questionnaire. This study uses the MADM model to conduct the analysis. First, this research study used Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) to construct an influential network relations map of the 4 dimensions and 13 criteria of employee care. Second, this study uses DEMATEL-based Analytic Network Process to conduct a weight analysis for each dimension and criterion. Third, this study uses VIKOR to calculate employees’ level of satisfaction as well as the gap from the “aspired level.” Findings The results of the study revealed the critical factors influencing employee care and proposed a systematic plan to be used as a reference for improvement. The improvement sequence revealed the following order: Equal employment opportunities→Good industrial relations and benefits→Responsibility to train and educate employees→Occupational health and safety. The empirical results showed there was still 35 percent room for improvement in the enterprises’ implementation policy of employee care. Originality/value The implementation of employee care has become an important issue for corporations since it helps to sustain and to increase an enterprise’s competitiveness in the business environment. However, the extant literature on employee care comes from enterprises’ perspectives instead of from employees’ perspectives. This research investigates the key factors of employee care and successfully shows MADM to be an effective model for the planning and implementation of corporate social responsibilities’ employee care from the perspective of employees.

PurposeSelecting a suitable contract to outsource construction projects is an ongoing concern for project managers and organizational directors. This study aims to propose a comprehensive model to manage the risks of outsourced construction project contracts.Design/methodology/approachTo employ the proposed model, firstly, the types of contracts and risks in the organization should be identified, then, to prioritize the contracts, the identified risks are considered as criteria. After receiving the experts' opinions, the best–worst method (BWM) integrated with grey relation analysis (GRA) method was used to prioritize the contracts. BWM and GRA are multi-criteria decision-making methods with different approaches and applications. In the current study, BWM has been employed to calculate the weights of criteria because it has better performance than other methods such as the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). After calculating the weights of criteria, the GRA method has been utilized for ranking the alternatives.FindingsAccording to the results obtained from the case study, the cost plus award fee contract is the most suitable alternative for outsourcing construction projects. The proposed methodology can be practically applied through different types of the projects such as construction or “engineering, procurement and construction”.Originality/valueTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a conceptual model has been proposed to select an appropriate contract for construction projects. Also, for the first time, the BWM integrated with GRA method has been used to prioritize project contracts based on the potential risks. The proposed model can contribute to project managers for selecting a suitable contract with the least risk in construction projects.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the multiple attribute decision making problems with triangular intuitionistic fuzzy information. Some operational laws of triangular intuitionistic fuzzy sets, score functions of triangular intuitionistic fuzzy sets are introduced. Based on these operational laws, some Einstein aggregation operators, including triangular intuitionistic fuzzy Einstein weighted averaging (TIFEWA) operator, triangular intuitionistic fuzzy Einstein ordered weighted averaging (TIFEOWA) operator and triangular intuitionistic fuzzy Einstein hybrid aggregation (TIFEHA) operator, are proposed. An approach to multiple attribute decision making with triangular intuitionistic fuzzy information is developed based on the TIFEWA operator. Finally, an illustrative example for evaluating the construction projects quality with triangular intuitionistic fuzzy information is given to verify the developed approach.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to consider compromise solutions of multiple attribute decision-making methods (TOPSIS, VIKOR, and similarity-based approach) in order to evaluate and rank mutual funds and to compare the capabilities of different approaches based on the different traditional indices of mutual funds assessment. In addition, a new algorithm for ranking mutual funds was proposed subsequently. Design/methodology/approach In this research, three groups of indices including general, risk-modified performance evaluation, and risk-modified performance evaluation indices using semivariance were used in the mutual funds assessment, which led to the comparison between selected mutual funds, using three mentioned methods and three different groups of criteria. The results of this comparison were compiled and synthesized with linear assignment method. At the end, an algorithm for decision making and investing in mutual funds for professional and unprofessional investors was proposed. Findings Using different methods and different criteria proved that the results of similarity-based approach as a MADM technique have the ability to rank and evaluate mutual funds regardless of the criteria used compared to TOPSIS and VIKOR. Furthermore, the authors propose the algorithm of this research as a new model of mutual funds evaluation which considers a wide range of variables with respect to amateur and professional points of view. Originality/value The originality of this paper is threefold: first, different criteria were considered to make the evaluation more comprehensive. Second, four different approaches were used to make the results more authentic. Third, a holistic algorithm with its implication was proposed.

Fermatean fuzzy set (FFS) is a more efficient, flexible, and generalized model to deal with uncertainty, as compared to intuitionistic and Pythagorean fuzzy models. This research article presents a novel multiple-attribute decision-making (MADM) technique based on FFS. Aggregation operators (AOs), for example, Dombi, Einstein, and Hamacher, are frequently being used in the MADM process and are considered useful tools for evaluating the given alternatives. Among these, one of the most effective is the Hamacher operator. The salient feature of this operator is that it reduces the impact of negative information and provides more accurate results. Motivated by the primary characteristics of the Hamacher operator, we apply Hamacher interactive aggregation operators based on FFSs to determine the best alternative. Using Hamacher’s norm operations, we introduce some new geometric operators, namely, Fermatean fuzzy Hamacher interactive weighted geometric (FFHIWG) operator, Fermatean fuzzy Hamacher interactive ordered weighted geometric (FFHIOWG) operator, and Fermatean fuzzy Hamacher interactive hybrid weighted geometric (FFHIHWG) operator. Some important results and properties of the proposed AOs are discussed, and to achieve the optimal alternative, the proposed MADM technique is carried out in a real-life application of the medical field. An algorithm of the proposed technique is also developed. The significance of the proposed method is that Fermatean fuzzy Hamacher interactive geometric (FFHIG) operators deal with the relationship among belongingness degree (BD) and nonbelongingness degree (NBD) of the objects, which perform a crucial role in decision-making (DM). At last, to show the exactness and validity of the proposed work, a comparative analysis of the proposed model and the existing models is presented.

While the approach to multiple-attribute decision-making (MADM) is widely used in a variety of fields, including models with fuzzy sets and corresponding extensions, it cannot solve target-oriented decision problems with both selective and targeted alternatives. Therefore, this study provides the first description of a target-oriented MADM problem and proposes a novel decision framework. An attribute value function for target orientation is defined by integrating range and frequency values derived under cumulative prospect theory and range-frequency theory. A Choquet integral with discrete fuzzy measures is then used to integrate attribute values and determine comprehensive values for selective alternatives. In this determination of comprehensive values, a parameter estimation model is also established, with its input assumed to be the pairwise comparison judgment matrix with probabilistic linguistic preference relation. This model as well as its transformation aims at determining the parameters of both the attribute value function and fuzzy measures. Finally, the process of target-oriented MADM is summarized, and an illustrative example is provided to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed techniques.

In this paper, the authors propose an interval linguistic distribution model for multiple attribute decision making (MADM) problems with incomplete linguistic information, in which they use intervals as evaluators' confidence levels indicating their belief degrees that a linguistic term fits an evaluation. By introducing the extent of ignoring information into this model, it can deal with incomplete linguistic assessments and then allow evaluators to avoid the dilemma that they have to supply complete assessments when not available. In addition, the uncertain subjective judgments on attributes of alternatives are represented as distributions on the linguistic term set used as an instrument for assessment in this model. This feature can be regarded as a measure for evaluators to handle uncertain information. The aggregation operators and expected utilities are also introduced for the purpose of aggregation and ranking problems of interval linguistic distributions. Finally, an example is used to illuminate the proposed model.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to rank products by combining sentiment analysis (SA) and multiple attribute decision-making (MADM). Design/methodology/approach This research constructs intuitionistic fuzzy (IF)-based sentiment word framework and corresponding computation rules, which aim to calculate the sentiment score of each sentiment phase. Based on intuitionistic fuzzy weighted averaging operator, the authors aggregate the overall performance of each feature for different products. Then, the MADM method can be used, TODIM (an acronym in Portuguese of interactive and multi-criteria decision making) in this paper, to rank product through online reviews. Findings The results of the research show the superiority and applicability of proposed method in ranking products with online reviews. Originality/value This paper proposes IF-based sentiment word framework and corresponding computation rules, which is a novel idea to express both the sentiment orientations (positive, negative and neutral) and emotional intensities. In addition, this research makes full use of knowledge from both experts and online reviewers. Further, attention degree of each feature is considered in the process of calculating weight of different features, which is rarely seen in current studies. This paper makes full use of SA, fuzzy control theory and MADM theory to handle vague information (online comments) and rank alternative products, which can promote future perspectives and developments.
