Effects of context on the entrepreneurial intent of female students from the United Arab Emirates

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the extent to which contextual factors outlined in the theory of planned behavior (TPB) affect entrepreneurial intent (EI) of female students in the United Arab Emirates. Design/methodology/approach This paper presents a hierarchical regression analysis utilizing data from a university in the UAE. Findings The study indicates that prior and current family business exposure to entrepreneurship does not affect the EI of female students from the UAE. However, the family affects EI via the family norms. More exposure to business classes and the subjective norms from the university are not significant predictors of EI, and perceived behavioral control is the strongest contextual predictor of EI. Research limitations/implications The study was limited to the UAE and to a small sample of female students from a single university; therefore, the findings should be interpreted with caution. Practical implications The study points to opportunities within the university environment to design more robust curricula that offer female students opportunities to boost their confidence in the ability to start up and manage a business. Originality/value The paper is the first of its kind to apply the TPB to the context of female students from the UAE.

Abstract Many researchers have studied gender differences in the entrepreneurial intention of students by analyzing the influence of several intrinsic and extrinsic factors on the antecedents of entrepreneurial intention. Fewer researchers have analyzed the influence of the university’s environment and support system on the precursors of the entrepreneurial intention of students in general and of female students in particular. This study aims to fill that gap by analyzing the influence of the university’s environment and support system on the precursors of entrepreneurial intention of female students at a university in Atlantic Canada. Findings of this study confirm that two precursors of entrepreneurial intention—i.e., attitude toward behavior and perceived behavioral control—mediate the effects of the university’s environment and support system on the entrepreneurial intention of female students. They also confirm that the university’s environment and support system comprises three distinct but interrelated dimensions, namely entrepreneurship training, start-up support, and entrepreneurial milieu. Results of this study also suggest that the university’s environment and support system has a positive relation with the perceived behavioral control of female students. However, findings of this study also suggest that the university’s environment and support system has a positive but negligible influence on the attitude toward the behavior of the same students. The outcomes of this study will help the university assess the efficacy of its innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives in promoting entrepreneurial activities. By understanding its entrepreneurial efficacy, the institution will be better equipped to raise the perceptions of venture feasibility and desirability, thus increasing students’ perceptions of opportunity.

Purpose – This study aims to integrate consumer-based brand equity for a tourism destination (CBBETD) and the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to examine the relationship between branding and customers’ attitudes toward banking services. Design/methodology/approach – A ten-minute pen and paper questionnaire was distributed to customers of Iran’s Melli Bank in Isfahan as the biggest national bank in Iran through a multistage cluster-sampling approach. Data were collected from 364 customers and analyzed by hierarchical regression approach. Findings – Branding constructs including brand image, brand awareness, perceived quality and brand loyalty have a significant relationship with attitude constructs including affective attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control and behavioral intention. Originality/value – This paper provides a practical framework derived from the CBBETD model and applies it in the context of banking services. The role and impact of its dimensions on customers’ attitudes has been demonstrated.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine how the satisfaction with economic and non-economic goals achievement is related to the overall satisfaction with the business of the CEO-owner, and whether family involvement moderates this relationship. Design/methodology/approach Based on a survey among 323 CEO-owners of family and non-family businesses operating in the Czech Republic, the authors employ the OLS hierarchical regression analysis and test the moderating effects of family involvement on the relationship between the satisfaction with different goals attainment and the overall satisfaction with the business. Findings The main finding is that family and non-family CEO-owner’s satisfaction does not differ significantly when economic goals (profit maximisation, sales growth, increase in market share or firm value) and firm-oriented non-economic goals (satisfaction of employees, corporate reputation) are being achieved; both classes of goals increase the overall satisfaction with the firm and the family involvement does not strengthen this relationship. However, when it comes to external non-economic goals related to the society or environment, there is a significant and positive moderating effect of family involvement. Originality/value The study contributes to the family business literature. First, to date, most of the studies focused on family business goals have been qualitative, thus not allowing for generalisation of findings. Second, there is a lack of evidence on the ways in which family firms integrate their financial and non-financial goals. Third, the authors contribute to the literature on the determinants of personal satisfaction with the business for CEOs, which has been the focus on a relatively scarce number of studies.

PurposeAt present, the adoption of cryptocurrency investment has brought consideration to the globe. The present paper attempts to investigate the intention to adopt cryptocurrency (IACR) among the potential investors of Pakistan.Design/methodology/approachThe theory of planned behavior (TPB) is applied to underpin the conceptual framework. The study uses a quantitative approach. The study collects cross-sectional data through an online survey questionnaire. In the last, the authors utilized 334 samples for outcomes.FindingsFindings of the SEM reveal a significant positive effect of attitude, subjective norms (SNs), perceived behavioral control (PBC) and trust on IACR.Practical implicationsThe outcomes of an investigation would develop further intention and trust towards cryptocurrency adoption. The results would support developing favorable policies regarding the reduction of the ban on cryptocurrency in Pakistan to make easier transactions of the investors further. Possibly, it brings several opportunities in all segments of society in making the digital transaction modes through cryptocurrency. Finally, the findings would further validate the TPB in the context of cryptocurrency.Originality/valueThe study provides a better understanding of cryptocurrency and investors IACR. The empirical evidence further develops the other individuals' intentions towards cryptocurrency usage.

Purpose Through the application of the theory of planned behavior (TPB), this study aims to explore the main determinants of higher education students’ pro-environmental behavior. Design/methodology/approach An online survey was conducted among the students of a public higher education institution (HEI) in Portugal, from March to May of 2020. The data were analyzed with the structural equation modeling technique, considering environmental attitude, knowledge, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control as exogenous latent variables, and pro-environmental intention and behavior as endogenous latent variables. Findings The results show that the students’ environmental attitude and knowledge have no significant impact on their pro-environmental intention, while the students’ subjective norm and perceived behavioral control have a positive impact on their pro-environmental intention. The results also reveal that the students’ perceived behavioral control and pro-environmental intention have a strong and positive impact on their pro-environmental behavior. Research limitations/implications This study focuses on the students from a single public HEI, in accounting and administration area, and deepens environmental behavior in relation to resources’ consumption. Practical implications This study provides findings that can be useful for HEIs to be more effective in their policies, strategies and practices to improve students’ environmental behavior. Originality/value The paper contributes to the literature by exploring the main determinants of higher education students’ pro-environmental behavior in a Portuguese HEI and extending the TPB considering the additional variable environmental knowledge.

 Background: The incessant promotion of fast food make a perception that fast food is a trend among teenager.  Fast food consumption habits that have high calorie but low nutrients will causes nutritional problems in adolescents. Objectives: The purpose of this study aimed to determine effect of nutritional education based on theory of planned behavior to change knowledge, attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, intention, and limited fast food consumption among female students in Sidoarjo. Methods: This study was interventional quasi-experimental research. 32 female students (each 16 female students for interventional group and 16 female students for control group), were selected by simple random sampling. The education was provided based on theory of planned behavior in four sessions. The researcher-made questionnaire based on theory of planned behavior used for data collection.The questionnaire was completed by the students twice, before and three weeks after the implementation of nutritional education. Data were analyze using descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney, and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks. Result: The results of this study show nutrition education based on theory of planned behavior influence knowledge (p<0.001), attitude (p<0.001), subjective norms (p=0.002), perceived behavioral control (p<0.001),intention (p<0.001), but doesn’t influence limited fast food consumption (p=0.570). Conclusion: Nutritional education based on the theory of planned behavior influence knowledge, attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and intention, but not effect to limited fast food consumption. So, nutrition education designed based on TPB effective to be implementation of health promotion.ABSTRAK Latarbelakang: Gencarnya promosi fast food  menimbulkan persepsi bahwa makanan cepat saji merupakan tren dikalangan remaja. Kebiasaan konsumsi makanan cepat saji yang mempunyai tinggi kalori namun rendah zat gizi menimbulkan masalah gizi lebih dan defisiensi zat gizi mikro pada remaja.Tujuan: Tujuan penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui pengaruh pendidikan gizi berbasis Theory of Planned Behavior terhadap perubahan pengetahuan, sikap, norma subyektif, perceived behavioral control, intensi, dan konsumsi membatasi fast food pada siswi di SMA Negeri 2 Sidoarjo.  Metode: Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dengan metode quasy experimental pada 32 siswi (16 siswi kelompok kontrol dan 16 siswi kelompok perlakuan) dipilih menggunakan simple random sampling. Pendidikan gizi berbasis TPB dilakukan selama 4 sesi yiatu sesi sikap, norma subyektif, PBC, dan intensi. Kuesioner penelitian yang digunakan untuk meneliti berbasis TPB. Penilaian dilakukan dua kali, yaitu sebelum dan 3 minggu setelah edukasi. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif, uji Mann Whitney dan Wilcoxon Signed Ranks.Hasil: Berdasarkan hasil penelitian bahwa pendidikan gizi berbasis theory of planned behavior mempengaruhi pengetahuan (p<0,001), sikap (p<0,001), norma subyektif (p<0,002),  perceived behavioral control (p<0,001), dan intensi (p<0,001) tetapi tidak mempengaruhi perilaku siswi untuk membatasi fast food (p=0,570).Kesimpulan: Pendidikan gizi berbasis TPB dapat mempengaruhi sikap, norma subyektif, PBC, dan intensi tetapi tidak merubah perilaku membatasi fast food. Dengan demikian maka diperlukan pendidikan gizi yang berkelanjutan agar dapat merubah suatu perilaku pembatasan fast food.


This study examined the relationship between attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control with the intention to provide halal maintenance to the family among Muslim fathers in Malaysia. The participants comprised of 353 Muslim fathers. The data were collected via a self-administered questionnaire. Findings from the study showed that there was a positive relationship between attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control with the father’s intention to provide halal maintenance for the family. In addition, the subjective norm is proven to be the most significant predictor of the intention to provide halal maintenance for the family.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is: to explain the relative influence of attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control on purchase intention of the 2010 FIFA World Cup sponsored products; and to compare the purchase intention of American and Korean spectators toward sponsoring products of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The structural equation modeling (SEM) revealed that subjective norm and perceived behavioral control were predictors of purchase intention. Further, multiple group analysis revealed that the path coefficient between subjective norm and purchase intention for the two groups was significantly different. Design/methodology/approach – A self-administered questionnaire was developed to measure the four constructs of the theory of planned behavior (TBP) as well as demographic information. Upon completion of the psychometric properties test of the TPB, a SEM was conducted to examine the proposed hypotheses. The same fit indices as with the measurement model were adopted to evaluate the model fit. Finally, a multi-group analysis was conducted to examine if the proposed relationships are different based on nationality (American vs Korean samples). A comparison of χ2 value between unconstrained and constrained models was employed to assess whether the two groups are statistically different. Findings – SEM revealed that subjective norm and perceived behavioral control were predictors of purchase intention. In this study, a multi-group analysis was conducted to examine if the proposed relationships in our model are different based on nationality. As a result, we found that two groups (i.e. American vs Korean) exhibited notable differences in subjective norms in determining purchase intentions of the 2010 FIFA World Cup sponsored products. Originality/value – Sponsors for mega sporting events, like the FIFA World Cup, must develop global marketing plans that appeal to worldwide audiences. Sport marketers, therefore, need cross-cultural marketing analysis on equivalence and bias so that they better understand how spectators from different cultures behave after consuming the same event. Thus, application of the TPB in cross-cultural studies aimed at understanding consumer intention after spectating the FIFA World Cup would provide marketers with valuable information for the formation of global marketing strategies.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the formation of social entrepreneurial intentions (SEIs) in postgraduate students in the South-East European region. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative approach (self-administered online questionnaire) is used to gather data. The total number of the questionnaires that were collected and analyzed through SPSS statistical suite was 115 from which 111 were valid. Findings From the proposed five hypotheses set in the literature, only the personality trait theory was totally rejected because it failed to predict social and commercial entrepreneurial intentions (EIs). The remaining hypotheses were found to be valid. The study’s key finding is that the chosen theory (Ajzen’s theory of planned behavior (TPB)), is able to predict both kinds of intentions. An alarming key finding is that tensions in mission focus seem to be present in the early shaped intentions of potential social entrepreneurs. Research limitations/implications Research findings impose that major educational and policy efforts are needed to promote the theme of social entrepreneurship (SE). The results indicate that most of the postgraduates have not yet fully understood the mindset of SE as they were confused about the synergy of the goals (inherent in their social vs profit intentions). Originality/value This research contributes in three major ways to the literature. First, it shows that SEIs seem to be shaped similarly to EIs; determined mostly by two of the motivational factors of the TPB (personal attitude and perceived behavioral control). Second, it shows which factors seem to affect both constructs and third, it adds to the literature by showing that tensions in mission focus are evident early on in the intentions’ formation process, underlying the necessity of immediate educational and legislative precautions.
