Chinese manufacturing industry development strategy from the financial perspective

Purpose – Based on literature review, the purpose of this paper is to design a comprehensive evaluation system for pharmaceutical industry from the financial perspective, and then analyses the development strategy of Chinese pharmaceutical industry according to the data of listed companies. Design/methodology/approach – This paper analyses the development strategy of Chinese pharmaceutical industry through building the grey dominance evaluation model including absolute degree of grey incidence model and relative degree of grey incidence model. Findings – Through the analysis of the grey dominance evaluation model, the authors find that four factors including total assets turnover, quick ratio, inventory turnover and current ratio can be grouped into first grade assessment indicator when evaluating the performance of Chinese pharmaceutical industry. These four indexes contain the concept of operational efficiency which shows that operation capability is the key to support the development of Chinese pharmaceutical industry, needing to be highly valued when organizations making business policy. When it comes to velocity of development, the contribution of R & D intensity is relatively small, which shows innovation ability of China’s pharmaceutical industry is still weak. Innovation is the lifeblood of enterprise development, needing to be improved to promote enterprise’s core competitiveness in the future development. Originality/value – This paper selects Y1-Y7 as the performance evaluation system of pharmaceutical manufacturing enterprises, while X1-X15 as performance evaluation index system from the financial perspective, which indicated that the evaluation system is scientific and practical. The empirical result shows that the operation capability makes the largest contribution to the performance of China’s pharmaceutical industry, while R & D ability and the enterprise core competitive ability are weak.

Purpose Performance measurement, especially at the enterprise level, requires intense consideration of experts and managers in organizations from both theoretical and practical aspects. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the overall organizational performance by developing a performance evaluation model, based on integrating two methodologies of balanced scorecard (BSC) – a multiple perspective plan for performance assessment – and analytic hierarchy process (AHP) – a structured technique for organizing and analyzing complex decisions. Design/methodology/approach The method was conducted in Isfahan Telecommunications Company (ITC), in 2013. In total, 27 managers of ITC were invited to participate. First, according to overall firm goals, key performance indicators (KPIs) were established with respect to four perspectives of BSC framework. Then pairwise comparisons were done, through standard AHP questionnaires, to determine the preference weights of each indicator and perspective and give precedence to them. Findings Organizational performance can be measured by the proposed model in a telecommunications industry. According to the adopted method, company KPIs, relative importance of BSC perspectives and performance evaluation of functional areas were identified. Practical implications This study provides guidance regarding strategies for improving organizational performance beyond the financial perspective. Originality/value Previous studies illustrate various applications of joint BSC and AHP. However, this study applies the integrated framework throughout an organization in a new application field and shows not only company’s features but also telecommunications industry features.

Using the balanced scorecard theory, the paper designs R&D team performance evaluation index, around finance, customer, learning and growth and internal operations of four dimensions. Then, the paper builds index weights method and comprehensive evaluation model based on AHP and fuzzy evaluation principle, taking GY group as an example. This research is to provide methodological support for R&D team management of new energy.

Purpose – Explains why performance evaluation designed for manufacturers is inappropriate for information technology organizations. Design/methodology/approach – Underlines the distinctiveness of the information technology workforce and provides the basis for an effective performance- evaluation system designed for these workers. Findings – Highlights the roles of consensus and transparency in setting and modifying evaluation criteria. Practical implications – Urges the need for a fair and open rewards and recognition system to run in parallel with reformed performance evaluation. Social implications – Provides a way of updating performance evaluation systems to take account of the move from manufacturing to information technology-based jobs in many developed and developing societies. Originality/value – Reveals how best to recognize, reward and assess the performance of information technology workers.

Purpose This study aims to establish a rigorous model that can pragmatically evaluate the facilities management (FM) performance of hospitals. Design/methodology/approach Among the applicable performance indicators that were identified from extant literature, a focus group study shortlisted ten key performance indicators (KPIs) in four categories (safety, physical, financial and environmental) and verified their practicality. Using the analytic network process (ANP) method to process the focus group’s responses yielded importance weightings for the KPIs and developed the intended evaluation model. This model was then validated by a case study. Findings From the empirical data collected, two types of FM performance data and two scenarios of KPI scores were identified. To process these data and scores, a robust calculation method was devised and then proved useful in obtaining an overall score for holistic hospital FM performance. The case study confirmed the appropriateness and validity of the model developed. Research limitations/implications Through illustrating how the ANP method could be applied to develop an FM performance evaluation model, the study contributes knowledge to the multi-criteria decision-making domain. Despite the geographical limitation of the model established (i.e. centered around a group of hospitals investigated in Hong Kong), the study can serve as a reference for developing performance evaluation models for other buildings or infrastructures globally. Practical implications The model constitutes a practical tool for evaluating the FM performance of hospitals. Using this model on a regular basis will enable performance benchmarking and hence, continuous improvement of FM services. Originality/value The ANP model established is the first of its kind tailored for evaluation of hospital FM performance.

PurposeThere is often a lack of accurate performance evaluation in Public–Private Partnership (PPP) projects. It is a challenging issue to effectively use Building Information Modeling (BIM) for PPP project performance evaluation. The objective of this study is to develop a PPP project performance evaluation model based on Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) and an enhanced matter-element method to more precisely evaluate PPP project performance.Design/methodology/approachThe performance evaluation of PPP projects in the construction and operation period was explored. The PPP project performance evaluation indicator system was first established based on a literature review and PPP project practice. Then, the evaluation indicator information was expressed through IFC mapping and extension. After that, an IFC-based PPP project performance evaluation model was developed, and a case study was provided to validate the use of the proposed performance evaluation model.FindingsThe results of the case study show that the proposed approach can accurately and efficiently evaluate PPP projects, and it could favorably contribute to performance evaluation in PPP projects.Research limitations/implicationsThis study only concerns the performance evaluation of one type of PPP project. Further research is required to study different types of PPP projects; the model needs to be more efficient and intelligent.Originality/valueThe performance evaluation of PPP projects utilizing IFC extension and the enhanced matter-element method provides guidance for the government and private parties to accurately and efficiently evaluate PPP project performance.

PurposeMost industries have become increasingly competitive nowadays, and a good supply chain relationship is essential for a company to survive and to acquire reasonable profit. Therefore, supplier selection is very important. The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel model for evaluating the performance of suppliers.Design/methodology/approachA supplier performance evaluation model based on analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and data envelopment analysis (DEA) is constructed. DEA is applied first to evaluate quantitative factors, and the results are transformed into pairwise comparison values for AHP analysis. Qualitative factors are also evaluated through AHP analysis, and a final ranking of suppliers can be obtained by combining the quantitative and qualitative results.FindingsThe proposed model can be applied to evaluate and select the most appropriate integrated circuit packaging company for outsourcing. With the incorporation of experts' opinions and the consideration of qualitative and quantitative factors, the model can provide a both subjective and objective supplier performance ranking.Practical implicationsThe proposed model can be tailored and applied to supplier evaluation and selection in other industries.Originality/valueAlthough many models are available for supplier evaluation, this paper considers both the subjective and objective performance characteristics simultaneously in the evaluation process.

Purpose This study aims to test, analyze, review and describe the problem of “How effective strategies for cooperatives development in East Java.” Design/methodology/approach The sample of this study was all cooperative employees in East Java province. The study focuses on the quantitative and qualitative approaches, sampling techniques with purposive sampling on employees of all cooperative districts/cities in East Java. A quantitative approach that is an inferential statistical analysis using the analytic hierarchical process (AHP) method was applied with a diagram/hierarchy. Findings The results of this study is the quality of work life criteria, which have an overall weight of 35%, play an important role in experts’ choice of employee performance measurement indicator selection. The development strategy goal for this study is as follows: work behavior (first place), work result (second place) and personal characteristics (third place). Originality/value This paper uses the AHP tool to identify strategies for cooperatives in East Java, which are rarely used in previous research, as well as the location of the research (cooperatives in Malang, Indonesia) that has not been studied in depth in other studies.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to exhibit performance evaluation research science and technology (S&T) policy in strengthening economic growth of Chongqing. Chongqing is the only one municipality in western China, and its S&T development absolutely will affect other fields to carry on in the whole nation. This research will offer a framework of S&T policy performance evaluation for the strategic management of S&T policy in Chongqing. Design/methodology/approach – This paper uses data envelopment analysis (DEA) and grey relational analysis (GRA) to measure up S&T policy performance evaluation in Chongqing based on data from 2007 to 2012. Findings – The key finding is that only S&T policy DEA value in 2008 is invalid, and four input factors and six output factors strongly relate to S&T efficiency. Practical implications – Policy makers should focus on S&T policy performance and evaluate it with the scientific method to stimulate S&T's healthy development. Originality/value – The paper gives an insight into the perspectives of input–output of S&T efficiency in Chongqing and forms an evaluation system which will benefit policy formulation and implement in the future.

With the rapid acceleration of global competition the need has arisen for a more systematic performance evaluation system. This research develops a two-stage performance evaluation system to help maximize performance evaluation success. The performance evaluation is an important approach for enterprises to give incentives and restraint to their operators. It is also an important channel for enterprise stakeholders to obtain performance information. This study analyzes the current evaluation system for the Taiwan LED industry. This research measures the performance of ten LED companies in Taiwan for the period 2003–2009. The proposed method is practical and useful. The evaluation model indicates that proposed method is more reasonable and easier to grasp than other methods. As a result, it is easier to popularize this evaluation method in enterprises. The proposed method presents a complete assessment model that helps managers identify items for improvement, while simultaneously promoting cost and time efficiencies in the LED industry.

Due to usability features, practical applications, and its lack of intrusiveness, face recognition technology, based on information, derived from individuals' facial features, has been attracting considerable attention recently. Reported recognition rates of commercialized face recognition systems cannot be admitted as official recognition rates, as they are based on assumptions that are beneficial to the specific system and face database. Therefore, performance evaluation methods and tools are necessary to objectively measure the accuracy and performance of any face recognition system. In this paper, we propose and formalize a performance evaluation model for the biometric recognition system, implementing an evaluation tool for face recognition systems based on the proposed model. Furthermore, we performed evaluations objectively by providing guidelines for the design and implementation of a performance evaluation system, formalizing the performance test process.
