Purpose This paper aims to study the effect of isosceles triangle micro concave texture with different parameters on the performance of oil seal to obtain a reasonable combination of parameters. Design/methodology/approach Based on the theory of elastohydrodynamic lubrication, a numerical model is established by coupling the texture parameters of isosceles triangle with concave lip with the two-dimensional average Reynolds equation considering surface roughness. Findings The results show that there is an optimal combination of parameters to improve the performance of the oil seal. When hp = 5µm-6.5 µm, a = 110°−130°, O = 1.4, C = 1.6 mm-2.2 mm, the oil seal with isosceles triangle micro concave texture can show good lubrication characteristics, friction characteristics and sealing ability. Originality/value The model provides a new idea for the design of new oil seal products and provides a theoretical support for the application of surface texture technology in the sealing field in the future.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the elastohydrodynamic lubrication point contact problem with bio-based oil as lubricants for an isothermal case. The simulation of the problem is analyzed on smooth and rough asperity. Design/methodology/approach The modified Reynolds equation is discretized using finite difference and multigrid method with full approximation scheme (FAS), applied for its solution with varying load and speed. Findings This paper traces out the comparison of minimum and central film thickness with the standard formulation of Hamrock and Dowson. The effect of longitudinal roughness on surfaces is investigated by means of numerical simulations. Originality/value The results obtained are comparable with the standard results, and are shown by graphs and tables. Bio-based products bring out an alternative source of lubricant to reduce energy crises.

Purpose This paper proposes the lubrication characteristics of the worn slipper in the slipper–swashplate pair. The mathematical analysis of lubrication characteristics of slipper with the measured surface roughness distribution is introduced. Based on the results from the test rig, it carries out the result compassion in different operating conditions. Design/methodology/approach This paper introduces the measured surface roughness distribution of new and used slippers and generates the oil film thickness distribution with it. An average flow Reynolds equation of the pressure distribution is introduced too. The experimental results are carried out on a novel adjustable oil film thickness test rig. Findings The surface roughness of the worn slipper enlarges the reacting force and torque only if the oil film thickness is small. When the ratio of oil film thickness to the root mean square of surface roughness is much smaller than 3, the influence of it on torque is obvious. Originality/value Different surface roughness of worn slipper proposed in this paper has an influence on the lubrication characteristics. As the slipper is worn after a period of use, the changed lubrication characteristics should be considered in the slipper design.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate how exclusivity and rarity (natural versus virtual) influence consumers' perceptions of luxury. Further, it examines whether exclusivity and rarity can function as distinct marketing strategies in today's luxury market environment.Design/methodology/approachOnline questionnaires were administered by adapting developed scales from prior research. Research stimuli were chosen from three luxury categories including bags, wine and cruise. Confirmatory factor analysis and multiple regressions were used to test the hypotheses.FindingsThe results confirmed that exclusivity, natural rarity and virtual rarity were perceived as relatively distinct constructs among our sample. Findings also highlighted that perceived natural rarity (PNR) has consistently emerged as a positive and significant contributor to consumers' perceptions of luxury across all three luxury categories. The influence of perceived exclusivity (PE) on perceptions of luxury has also shown to be significant for two product categories (luxury bag and luxury wine), whereas perceived virtual rarity (PVR) did not show any significant effects across all three categories.Practical implicationsThe results indicate that consumers perceive natural rarity, virtual rarity and exclusivity as relatively distinctive marketing strategies. This suggests that luxury businesses can adopt each strategy independently to achieve desired marketing outcomes.Originality/valueThis study offers theoretical support for the proposition that exclusivity and rarity may have different functions in luxury marketing implementations. It provides empirical evidence showing the distinctiveness of perceived exclusivity and perceived rarity, which have not be done in previous research.

Purpose This paper aims to provide a reliable and efficient numerical piston–cylinder design method and assess the effect of clearance on the piston-cylinder lubrication. Design/methodology/approach Numerical analyses of lubrication characteristics were performed for the piston–cylinder interface. The axial piston was numerically modeled, and the film pressure was calculated using the unsteady two-dimensional Reynolds equation. The behavior of the piston was analyzed by calculating the eccentricity satisfying the force and moment balance. Findings The secondary motion of the piston included numerically simulated several cycles until the piston behavior converged, and contact with the inner wall of the cylinder and friction region was estimated. Results showed that the piston–cylinder clearance affected the contact force, length of the contact region and leakage flow rate. Originality/value This result improves the understanding of the piston–cylinder lubrication and suggests considerations in terms of lubrication in clearance design.

Purpose This study aims to examine the magneto-elastohydrodynamic effect on finite-width slider-bearings lubrication using a non-Newtonian lubricant. Design/methodology/approach Based on the magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) theory and Stokes micro-continuum mechanics, the modified two-dimensional Reynolds equation including bearing deformation was derived. Findings It is found that the bearing deformation diminishes the load-capacity and increases the friction coefficient in comparison with the rigid case. However, the non-Newtonian effect increases load-capacity but decreases the friction coefficient. Moreover, the use of a transverse magnetic field increases both the friction coefficient and load capacity. Originality/value This study combines for the first time MHD and elastic deformation effects on finite-width slider-bearings using a non-Newtonian lubricant.

Purpose The aim of the present paper is to study the combined influence of textured surface and micropolar lubricant behaviour on the performance of two-lobe hole-entry hybrid journal bearing system. The bearing performance parameters of the textured circular/two-lobe hole-entry hybrid journal bearing system have been computed against the constant vertical external load supported by the bearing. Design/methodology/approach In this work, Eringen’s micropolar fluid theory has been used to derive the governing Reynolds equation. The consequent solution of the governing Reynolds equation has been obtained by using finite element method (FEM) numerical technique. Findings The present study indicates that the use of the textured surface, two-lobe profile of bearing and micropolar lubricant, significantly enhances the bearing performance as compared to non-textured circular journal bearing. Originality/value The present study concerning the influence of surface texturing on the behaviour of the two-lobe hole-entry hybrid journal bearing lubricated with micropolar lubricant is original. The theoretically simulated results of the present study will be useful to design an efficient journal bearing system.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the behavior of a single ridge passing through elastohydrodynamic lubrication of point contacts problem for different ridge shapes and sizes, including flat-top, triangular and cosine wave pattern to get an optimal ridge profile. Design/methodology/approach The time-dependent Reynolds’ equation is solved using Newton–Raphson technique. Several shapes of surface feature are simulated and the film thickness and pressure distribution are obtained at every time step by simultaneous solution of the Reynolds’ equation and film thickness equation, including elastic deformation. Film thickness and pressure distribution are chosen to be the criteria in the comparisons. Findings The geometrical characteristics of the ridge play an important role in the formation of lubricant film thickness profile and the pressure distribution through the contact zone. To minimize wear, friction and fatigue life, an optimal ridge profile should have smooth shape with small ridge size. Obtained results are compared with other published numerical results and show a good agreement. Originality/value The study evaluates the performance of different surface features of a single ridge with different shapes and sizes passing through elastohydrodynamic of point contact problem in relation to film thickness and pressure profile.

Purpose This paper aims to propose a method for finding the maximum rotational speed of an inclined turntable at which the stability of the bearing oil film is maintained. Design/methodology/approach The finite difference method was used to solve the Reynolds equation. Variation of bearing capacity of a tilted hydrostatic turret over time was determined. The combined effect of tilt and rotational speed of the turret on the oil film stability was also analyzed. Findings When the turntable is operated at low speeds with only small angle of tilt, stability of the oil film is maintained. At lower rotational speeds, a smaller angle of tilt improves the bearing capacity and ensures stability of the oil film. Whereas, higher rotational speeds can have a considerable influence on the bearing capacity. Originality/value The results demonstrate that the inclination or tilt of the turntable significantly affects the stability of the oil film.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze journal thrust bearings geometries, used in household refrigerators, using a modified version of the Reynolds equation which includes the inertial terms. Design/methodology/approach – The Reynolds equation was solved through the finite volume method, thus providing the pressure field in the lubricant film and, consequently, the load and the power used by the bearing. Such parameters depend on bearing geometry, which was optimized through the method of Lagrange multipliers, to support a given load and use the lowest power possible. The optimized geometries included the Rayleigh pad with 4, 8 and 16 steps, and a milled geometry with 4 steps. Findings – For the Rayleigh pad, the number of steps was varied and a decrease in the power consumed with the increase in the number of steps was observed. The milled pad performance was better than that Rayleigh pad with 4 steps and comparable to the pad with 8 steps. Originality/value – The manufacture of pads, with a high number of steps, is complicated and, then, a milled pad with 4 steps was proposed in this paper. The use of milled pads is a technological innovation worthy of a more thorough investigation, considering its facility of manufacture when compared to the Rayleigh pad.

Purpose This paper aims to explore pure squeeze elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) motion of circular contacts with micropolar lubricants under constant load. The proposed model can reasonably calculate the pressure distributions, film thicknesses and normal squeeze velocities during the pure squeeze process. Design/methodology/approach The transient modified Reynolds equation is derived in polar coordinates using micropolar fluids theory. The finite difference method and the Gauss–Seidel iteration method are used to solve the transient modified Reynolds equation, the elasticity deformation equation, load balance equation and lubricant rheology equations simultaneously. Findings The simulation results reveal that the effect of the micropolar lubricant is equivalent to enhancing the lubricant viscosity. As the film thickness is enlarged, the central pressure and film thickness for micropolar lubricants are larger than those of Newtonian fluids under the same load in the elastic deformation stage. The greater the coupling parameter (N), the greater the maximum central pressure. However, the smaller the characteristic length (L), the greater the maximum central pressure. The time needed to achieve maximum central pressure increases with increasing N and L. Originality/value A numerical method for general applications was developed to investigate the effects of the micropolar lubricants at pure squeeze EHL motion of circular contacts under constant load.
