The effect of self-regulated programming learning on undergraduate students’ academic performance and motivation

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of self-regulated programming learning on undergraduate students’ academic performance and motivation compared to traditional methods. Design/methodology/approach This study was conducted with an explanatory sequential mixed method. Participants consist of 31 undergraduate students studying in the department of computer and instructional technologies education. The students were separated into two groups as experimental (n = 15) and control (n = 16) in the robotic programming course. Academic performance tests, programming motivation scale and interview form were used as data collection tools. After collecting quantitative data, interviews were conducted with the students regarding their academic performance and motivation. Findings The results indicated that the self-regulated programming learning process can contribute positively to students’ academic performance and motivation compared to traditional methods. Students stated that self-regulated learning strategies can positively affect their academic performance and motivation. Originality/value In this study, a self-regulated learning support system was designed to encourage students to use self-regulated learning strategies. This study has the potential to contribute to the gap in the literature, especially as a study of adapting the phased model of self-regulated learning to programming teaching. Instructors can use the self-regulating programming learning framework by adapting it to different disciplines.

PurposeUndergraduate students often find it difficult to organize their learning activities and manage their learning. Also, teachers need dynamic pedagogical frameworks and learning technologies for supporting learners to advance their academic performance. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of an ePortfolio intervention on self-regulated learning (SRL cognitive, affective, behavioral and contextual processes) and academic achievement.Design/methodology/approachFor the purposes of this study, an ePortfolio was designed and implemented based on SRL. The ePortfolio-based self-regulated learning approach (ePSRL) system encompasses the merits of a social networking platform and the functionalities of a learning management system. The participants were 123 university students (38 females and 85 males) at a computer science department. Students were randomly divided into two groups, the experimental and the control group.FindingsThe results of the study indicate that there is a significant increase of the means across SRL processes between the perceptions in the experimental and the control group. The implementation of the ePSRL approach as a learning module for undergraduate students could enable learners to manage their learning processes, transform their behavior into measurable learning outcomes and foster their academic performance.Originality/valueThis paper considers the importance of SRL and ePortfolios. Also, highlights the need of providing technology enhanced training courses and interventions to undergraduate students for supporting them to thrive during their academic studies. Thus, it proposes a set of educational affordances and practical guidelines that can be used by practitioners, instructional designers and educators in higher education as well as in vocational education and training institutions.

This study examines the relationship between self-regulated learning strategies and students' academic performance in English courses. The research method is descriptive-correlational. The statistical population includes all students of Azad University, Gorgan branch in the period 2020-2021. convenience sampling based on the Morgan table is used to select 384 people. The data collection tool is Zimmerman and Martinez-Pons Self-Regulated Learning Interview Schedule (1998), and for academic performance, the average grade in English course in two semesters was taken into account. Pearson correlation analyzes the data. The results show a significant relationship between self-regulated learning strategies and the academic performance of English course students. The Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) strategies can be the best. It can be achieved by a sub-goal that will be more important in the younger generation. This paper proposes the process of developing factors (attributes) which are related to the development of learning styles through self-regulated strategies. The objectives of this paper are (1) to study the perception and attitude toward the attributes of students with self-regulated learning of the students in higher education, and (2) to find the level of acceptance towards the factor of SRL using applied statistics and machine learning technology. The results show that two tools have proved the respondents and the factors of SRL in the accepted level. Besides, the results found that Thai higher education students still focus on formal learning, which conflicts with the behavior and us-age of Internet and telephone in the classroom. In future work, the author is committed to develop and apply a self-regulated learning strategy model with a combination of collaborative learning strategies of blended learning. Also, it supports undergraduate students in analyzing the factors and studying the behavior patterns of learners in suitable modern learning.

A sociedade atual, do conhecimento e da informação, requer do ensino superior novas dinâmicas mediadas pelas tecnologias, constituindo-se, nesse contexto, a Educação a Distância como modalidade de ensino privilegiada. Tornam-se relevantes a análise e a compreensão das formas de aquisição de conhecimento nessa modalidade por parte dos alunos, sendo o estudo da variável autorregulação da aprendizagem priorizada dada a sua importância para o sucesso acadêmico dos mesmos. O presente trabalho, após pesquisa guiada pelos atuais e credíveis repositórios português e brasileiro, RCAAP e CAPES, analisou artigos, dissertações de mestrado e teses de doutorado no âmbito da autorregulação da aprendizagem na Educação a Distância publicados no Brasil e em Portugal no período de 2010 a 2015. Os resultados encontrados apontam para quatro abordagens principais: o portfólio, como instrumento com imenso potencial da aprendizagem autorregulada; as estratégias de aprendizagem como extremamente importantes nos processos de autorregulação; estudos centrados no tutor e na forma como estes podem promover a autorregulação nos alunos; e, por último, as TIC, ou seja, as aplicações hipermédia como apoio à aprendizagem autorregulada. It is relevant to the analysis and understanding of the ways of acquiring knowledge by the students and the study of self-regulation variable prioritized learning given its importance for academic success thereof. This study analyzed articles, dissertations and theses PhD under the Self-Regulation of Learning in Distance Education published in Brazil and Portugal in the period 2010 to 2015 in RCAAP's and CAPES's databases. The results point to four main approaches: the portfolio as a tool with great potential of self-regulated learning; learning strategies as extremely important in the self-regulation processes; studies centered tutor and how these may promote self-regulation in students; and, finally, ICT, so hypermedia applications like self-regulating support for learning. Further studies are needed on this topic including the expansion of search platforms to a broader result.Keywords: Self regulation, E-learning, Distance education.

Increased numbers of minorities in the allied health disciplines are sought for a number of reasons. One approach to increasing minority graduates in allied health sciences is to ensure that minority applicants have the learning behaviors necessary to succeed in the academic setting. In this study, we sought to determine if self-regulated learning, assessed via a self-report inventory, was significantly related to Grade Point Average (GPA) in undergraduate students enrolled in a historically black college or university (HBCU). The Self Regulated Learning Inventory V. 5 (SRLI V.5) was distributed to undergraduate HBCU students enrolled in allied health majors. The inventory was completed by 134 undergraduate students who provided the data for the study. Results indicated that the SRLI was not significantly correlated with academic success (based on student GPA). Further investigation revealed that different methods used in calculating GPA and the inclusion of transfer students likely decreased the statistical power of the association between academic performance and self-regulation.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the linkage of case-based instruction with the enhancement of self-regulated learning of employees. Specific objectives are to review and describe: some characteristics of adult learning, features and functions of self-regulated learning (SRL) and the instructional approach, case-based learning (CBL), followed by a synthesis of the information in the form of a detailed, CBL approach for practitioner use. Design/methodology/approach The approach used in this work is represented in the following phases. First, conduct a literature review of each of these areas: characteristics of adult learners, details of SRL and its components, accompanied by the expression of linkages among the concepts and CBL. This includes exploration of metacognition, as it relates to the self-regulation of learning. Also reviewed was CBL, including theory background. Literature reviews were aided by databases: Education Research Complete, Psych Info and ScienceDirect. The second substantive phase was to synthesize the information obtained in the reviews and analysis and create a detailed design presentation for using CBL with trainees. Findings The findings of the analysis and synthesis of information enable the expression of a complete, detailed approach to the application of CBL for practitioner use. A review of practices in CBL augmented with examination of important theories of situated cognition and constructivism assist in building a rationale as to how case-based instruction may improve individual and team/group self-regulation of learning. Practical implications Presented in the paper is a complete model of case-based instruction for practitioner use and refinement. Originality/value Case-based instruction has not been directly linked to the self-regulation of learning. This paper makes a contribution to the literature of CBL as well as to situational cognition.

Purpose Teaching management information systems (MIS) fundamental course remains a challenging task to date, encountering several continuing complaints from students as well as instructors, as per several studies. Several reasons are reported, some of which are related to little embrace of more innovative non-traditional techniques, and limited literature guidance on selection and effective use of appropriate strategies to various settings. Toward instructional innovation, this paper proposes and tests a pedagogical instrument. By introducing this tool, the ultimate objective is to minimize the confusion that students usually encounter during this course and to empower the instructors in the delivery of its interdisciplinary knowledge. Design/methodology/approach A triangulation of four methods is being employed: conceptual development, experimentation for 12 years, assessment in light of the self-regulated learning theory, and empirical analysis. For the latter method, an open-ended questionnaire as well as group interviewing were carried out. Findings The proposed instrument (need-function instrument [NFI]) was found to be in support of self-regulated learning to a promising extent in terms of its four core aspects. The participants were more inclined to accept as well as appreciate the instrument than report drawbacks. Yet, there are few complaints for the inability to distinguish between two introduced terms, ‘Information Problem’ and ‘Operations Problem’. Therefore, a future effort is deemed necessary to explore this aspect. Research limitations/implications The results are based on a single case of educational institution which is not enough to generalize for other educational environments. Future research is necessary for testing in a variety of settings in terms of type of classroom, number of students enrolled, type of institution (public or private), etc. Practical implications Whereas the instrument is anticipated to render improvements in the students’ understanding of MIS content and to alleviate the task of the course leader in delivering the course, there are possible practical implications that should be paid careful attention to. They were analyzed in terms of four dimensions: the Instructor, the Student, the Classroom and Time. Originality/value The paper introduces a new pedagogical instrument/tool for teaching the MIS fundamental course.

STEM education in Vietnam is prioritized, yet effective learning may be difficult for students attending transnational universities. The purpose of this study is to examine the self-regulated learning experiences of STEM undergraduate students attending a collaborative transnational university in Vietnam. Challenges included English language instruction and STEM-specific terminology. Despite barriers to their learning, students describe strategies for navigating their learning process. Strategies included extensive rereading of the material, using Google to look up new terms/ideas or to translate words, asking instructors for translation, and reviewing online resources. Implications for practice include instructors providing more detailed feedback and guidance and leveraging technology use for learning.
