PurposeThe steady two-dimensional laminar boundary layer flow, heat and mass transfer over a flat plate with convective surface heat flux was considered. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations were transformed into a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations and then solved numerically by Runge–Kutta method with the most efficient shooting technique. Then, the effect of variable viscosity and variable thermal conductivity on the fluid flow with thermal radiation effects and viscous dissipation was studied. Velocity, temperature and concentration profiles respectively were plotted for various values of pertinent parameters. It was found that the momentum slip acts as a boost for enhancement of the velocity profile in the boundary layer region, whereas temperature and concentration profiles decelerate with the momentum slip.Design/methodology/approachNumerical Solution is applied to find the solution of the boundary value problem.FindingsVelocity, heat transfer analysis is done with comparing earlier results for some standard cases.Originality/value100

Purpose This paper aims to investigate laminar boundary layer flow and heat transfer from a warm laminar Casson liquid to a melting sheet moving parallel to a melting stream. The governing equations, i.e. continuity, momentum and heat transfer, are coupled non-linear partial differential equations. These equations are reduced to non-linear ordinary differential equations by means of similarity transformations, converted into first-order differential equations, and are solved numerically using the Runge–Kutta–Felhberg method with an efficient shooting technique. The velocity and temperature profiles are plotted for various values of the governing parameters, such as the moving parameter, Prandlt number, melting parameter and Casson parameter. It is found that the problem admits multiple solutions. The results of this study are validated by comparing them with the earlier published studies’ results. Thus, a good agreement is obtained. Design/methodology/approach This study carries out numerical solution of melting heat transfer analysis. Findings The findings of this study show the analysis of flow and melting heat transfer characteristics. Research limitations/implications In this study, analysis of dual solution is carried out. Originality/value In this paper, the melting heat transfer analysis on Blasius flow of a Casson fluid is taken into consideration. To the best of the author’s knowledge, no investigations have been reported on this topic.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to consider axisymmetric mixed convection flow of water over a sphere with variable viscosity and Prandtl number and an applied magnetic field. Design/methodology/approach The non-similar solutions have been obtained from the origin of the streamwise co-ordinate to the point of zero skin friction using quasilinearization technique with an implicit finite-difference scheme. Findings The effect of M is not notable on the temperature and heat transfer coefficient when λ is large. The skin friction coefficient and velocity profile are enhance with the increase of MHD parameter M when λ is small. Viscous dissipation has no significant on the skin friction coefficient under MHD effect. For M=1, the movement of the slot or slot suction or slot injection do not cause any effect on flow separation. The slot suction and the movement of the slot in downstream direction delay the point of zero skin friction for M=0. Originality/value The present results are original and new for water boundary-layer flow over sphere in mixed convection flow with MHD effect and non-uniform mass transfer. So this study would be useful in analysing the skin friction and heat transfer coefficient on sphere of mixed convection flow of water boundary layer with MHD effect.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to numerically solve the problem of an unsteady squeezing three-dimensional flow and heat transfer of a nanofluid in rotating vertical channel of stretching left plane. The fluid is assumed to be Newtonian, incompressible and electrically conducting embedded with nanoparticles. Effect of internal heat generation/ absorption is also considered in energy equation. Four different types of nanoparticles are considered, namely, copper (Cu), alumina (Al2O3), silver (Ag) and titanium oxide (TiO2) with the base fluid as water. Maxwell-Garnetts and Brinkman models are, respectively, employed to calculate the effective thermal conductivity and viscosity of the nanofluid. Design/methodology/approach – Using suitable similarity transformations, the governing partial differential equations are transformed into set of ordinary differential equations. Resultant equations have been solved numerically using Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg fourth fifth order method for different values of the governing parameters. Effects of pertinent parameters on normal, axial and tangential components of velocity and temperature distributions are presented through graphs and discussed in detail. Further, effects of nanoparticle volume fraction, squeezing parameter, suction/injection parameter and heat source/sink parameter on skin friction and local Nusselt number profiles for different nanoparticles are presented in tables and analyzed. Findings – Squeezing effect enhances the temperature field and consequently reduces the heat transfer rate. Large values of mixed convection parameter showed a significant effect on velocity components. Also, in many heat transfer applications, nanofluids are potentially useful because of their novel properties. They exhibit high-thermal conductivity compared to the base fluids. Further, squeezing and rotation effects are desirable in control the heat transfer. Originality/value – Three-dimensional mixed convection flows over in rotating vertical channel filled with nanofluid are very rare in the literature. Mixed convection squeezing three-dimensional flow in a rotating channel filled with nanofluid is first time investigated.

PurposeThis paper aims to discuss about the two-dimensional numerical simulations of fluid flow and heat transfer through high thermal conductivity metal foams filled in a vertical channel using the commercial software ANSYS FLUENT.Design/methodology/approachThe Darcy Extended Forchheirmer model is considered for the metal foam region to evaluate the flow characteristics and the local thermal non-equilibrium heat transfer model is considered for the heat transfer analysis; thus the resulting problem becomes conjugate heat transfer.FindingsResults obtained based on the present simulations are validated with the experimental results available in literature and the agreement was found to be good. Parametric studies reveal that the Nusselt number increases in the presence of porous medium with increasing thickness but the effect because of the change in thermal conductivity was found to be insignificant. The results of heat transfer for the metal foams filled in the vertical channel are compared with the clear channel in terms of Colburn j factor and performance factor.Practical implicationsThis paper serves as the current relevance in electronic cooling so as to open up more parametric and optimization studies to develop new class of materials for the enhancement of heat transfer.Originality/valueThe novelty of the present study is to quantify the effect of metal foam thermal conductivity and thickness on the performance of heat transfer and hydrodynamics of the vertical channel for an inlet velocity range of 0.03-3 m/s.

This article presents a numerical study to investigate boundary-layer heat transfer fluid associated with a moving flat body in cooperation of variable plate and streaming-free velocity along the boundary surface in the laminar flow. The thermal conductivity is supposed to vary linearly with temperature. Similarity transformations are applied to render the governing partial differential equations for mass, momentum and energy into a system of ordinary differential equations to reveal the possible existence of dual solutions. MATLAB package has been used to solve the boundary value problem numerically. We present the effects of various parameters such as velocity ratio, thermal conductivity and variable viscosity on velocity and temperature distribution. The analysis of the results concerning Skin friction and Nusselt number near the wall is also presented. It is focused on the detection and description of the dual solutions. The study reveals that the undertaken problem admits dual solutions in particular range of values of different physical parameters. It can be seen that for the first branch solution, the fluid velocity decreases near the sheet, but it increases far away from the sheet for velocity ratio parameter, whereas the opposite effect is induced for second branch solution. Skin friction coefficient and rate of heat transfer increase due to increase in thermal conductivity parameter.

The MHD flow and heat transfer from water functionalized CNTs over a static/moving wedge are studied numerically. Thermal conductivity and viscosity of both single and multiple wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) within a base fluid (water) of similar volume are investigated to determine the impact of these properties on thermofluid performance. The governing partial differential equations are converted into nonlinear, ordinary, and coupled differential equations and are solved using an implicit finite difference method with quasi-linearization techniques. The effects of volume fraction of CNTs and magnetic and wedge parameters are investigated and presented graphically. The numerical results are compared with the published data and are found to be in good agreement. It is shown that the magnetic field reduces boundary layer thickness and increases skin friction and Nusselt numbers. Due to higher density and thermal conductivity, SWCNTs offer higher skin friction and Nusselt numbers.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate two-dimensional viscous incompressible magnetohydrodynamic boundary layer flow and heat transfer of an electrically conducting fluid over a continuous moving flat surface considering the viscous dissipation and Joule heating.Design/methodology/approachSuitable similarity variables are introduced to reduce the governing nonlinear boundary layer partial differential equations to ordinary differential equations. A numerical solution of the resulting two-point boundary value problem is carried out by using the finite element method with the help of Gauss elimination technique.FindingsA comparison of obtained results is made with the previous work under the limiting cases. Behavior of flow and thermal fields against various governing parameters like mass transfer parameter, moving flat surface parameter, magnetic parameter, Prandtl number and Eckert number are analyzed and demonstrated graphically. Moreover, shear stress and heat flux at the moving surface for various values of the physical parameters are presented numerically in tabular form and discussed in detail.Originality/valueThe work is relatively original, as very little work has been reported on magnetohydrodynamic flow and heat transfer over a continuous moving flat surface. Viscous dissipation and Joule heating are neglected in most of the previous studies. The numerical method applied to solve governing equations is finite element method which is new and efficient.

In this article unsteady three dimensional MHD boundary layer flow and heat transfer analysis with constant temperature (CT) and constant heat flux (CH) in a porous medium is considered. The boundary layer flow is governed by a bidirectional stretching sheet. Similarity transformations are used to transform the governing non-linear partial differential equations to ordinary differential equations. Analytical solutions are constructed using homotopy analysis method (HAM). Convergence analysis is also presented through tabular data. The quantities of interest are the velocity, temperature, skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number. The obtained results are validated by comparisons with previously published work in special cases. The results of this parametric study are shown graphically and the physical aspects of the problem are discussed.
