This book explores the curious relationship between Albatross Press—a British-funded publisher of English-language books with Jewish ties—and the Third Reich of Adolf Hitler. Albatross began printing its books in Germany in May 1932, barely a year before Hitler came to power. It made its name not in the trade of mild classics but in edgy, modern British and American books. From its titles to its packaging, Albatross projected a cosmopolitan ethos at odds with German nationalism. This book tells the story of survival against the odds, of what happened when a resolutely cosmopolitan, multinational publishing house became entwined with the most destructively nationalistic culture of modern times. It asks how Albatross was allowed to print and sell its books within the nationalistic climate of Nazi Germany, became the largest purveyor of English-language paperbacks in 1930s Europe and then vanished with so little trace.

Due to the popularity of the Internet and portable readers, the digital publishing market was highly developing. A study from Displayban showed that digital publishing had a market value of 13 billion U.S. dollars and had increased 68 percent of production value compared to that in 2010 globally. Meanwhile, the production value of e-book readers had a market share of 80 percent to the whole digital publishing market. However, reading and manipulating a traditional printed book and an e-book were tremendously different. The design and layout of an e-book definitely affected the readability. Therefore, how to increase e-book readability was a topical concern in digital publishing industry. A content analysis and an in-depth interview methods were adopted in the study. The content analysis aimed to analyze the best-selling car e-magazine, Car News, regarding to its readability. The in-depth interview was to consult the chief editor of the publishing house to understand readability strategies and rules applied in its e-book products. Finally, after the reliability test of encoders passed, and the results from e-book content analysis and in-depth interview were comprehensively compared in every aspects of readability. The conclusions were that the traditional rigorous book layout design principles, such as indent, column, paragraph style, typography, etc. should be applied onto e-books to provide a better readability. Meanwhile, too many interactive or multimedia objects can reduce readability. Although, editors and experts from digital publishing industry were all agree with this, but most of current e-books indeed had too many interactive or multimedia objects. Nevertheless, multimedia and interaction objects were the most important features of e-books in spite of less readability. In short, based on the study and trade off the readability of e-books, publishing companies should not import multimedia and interactive objects deliberately. On the contrary, based on the book content, multimedia or interactive objects could be applied with a proper consideration to achieve their characteristics and strengths. By doing this, subjects of e-book could be emphasized and readability can be remained as well.

When James Baldwin in No Name in the Street discusses the case of Tony Maynard, who had been imprisoned in Hamburg in 1967, he emphasizes that his efforts to aid his unjustly imprisoned friend were greatly supported by his German publishing house Rowohlt and, in particular, by his then-editor Fritz Raddatz (1931–2015). While the passages on Maynard remain the only instance in Baldwin’s published writings in which Raddatz—praised as a courageous “anti-Nazi German” and a kindred ally who “knows what it means to be beaten in prison”—is mentioned directly, the relation between Baldwin and Raddatz has left traces that cover over fifty years. The African-American writer and Rowohlt’s chief editor got to know each other around 1963, when Baldwin was first published in Germany. They exchanged letters between 1965 and 1984, and many of Raddatz’s critical writings from different periods—the first piece from 1965, the last from 2014—focus of Baldwin’s books. They also collaborated on various projects—among them a long interview and Baldwin’s review of Roots—which were all published in the German weekly newspaper Die Zeit, where Raddatz served as head of the literary and arts sections from 1977 to 1985. Drawing on published and unpublished writings of both men, this article provides a discussion of the most significant facets of this under-explored relationship and its literary achievements. Thereby, it sheds new light on two central questions of recent Baldwin scholarship: first, the circumstances of production and formation crucial to Baldwin’s writings of the 1970s and 1980s, and secondly, Baldwin’s international activities, his transcultural reception and influence.

Investigating the emergence of Hindi publishing in colonial Lucknow, long a stronghold of Urdu and Persian literary culture, Shobna Nijhawan offers a detailed study of literary activities emerging out of the publishing house Gaṅgā Pustak Mālā in the first half of the twentieth century. Closely associated with it was the Hindi monthly Sudhā, a literary, socio-political, and illustrated periodical, in which Hindi writings were promoted and developed for the education and entertainment of the reader. In charting the literary networks established by Dularelal Bhargava, the proprietor of Gaṅgā Pustak Mālā and chief editor of Sudhā, this volume sheds light on his role in the development of Hindi language and literature, creation of canonical literature, and commercialization and nationalization of books and periodicals in the north Indian Hindi public sphere. Using vernacular primary sources and drawing on scholarship on periodicals and publishing houses as well as editor-publishers that has emerged over the past two decades, Nijhawan shows how one publishing house singlehandedly impacted the role of Hindi in the public sphere.

IN BEIJING, on 4 November 2003, L. G. Alexander – for many years the world's foremost author of English language teaching materials – was formally commemorated. A bronze statue was raised in his honour in the grounds of the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP), the publishing house of the Beijing Foreign Studies University and one of China's largest schoolbook publishers. The statue was jointly sponsored by FLTRP and Pearson Education Asia.

The objective of this study is explore the use game-based intervention as a tool in understanding its contributions to the level of English Language proficiency among B40 secondary school students in Klang Valley (n=104). Results was tested using correlational study in SPSS. The level of English proficiency improvement of students was measured according to The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Results indicate that more than 50% (54) shows a significant result in improvement with moderate-string correlation and statistically significant. This allows the curation of appropriate strategies and responses to address application development in English language learning if necessary. The aim of the research is to analyze English language scientific articles that have been published in the scientific journal entitled Annals PAAAE from 2009 to 2018 by using tools of text mining and text analysis, measuring how the frequency of key terms has changed, and to conclude the probable change of research focus of authors based on it. The subjects of the research are 393 English language articles that have been issued in the volumes of Annals PAAAE (Polish title is Roczniki Naukowe SERiA) from 2009 to 2018 (from Vol. 11 to Vol. 20), which are ready to download in pdf format on the website of the publishing house. Text mining and text analysis were conducted using own self-adapted routines of samples written in the R language programme. At the hierarchic cluster analysis, the Ward D method was used, and the association of frequency of terms was measured using Pearson’s correlation. It was found that the weight of research concerning the context of the product-production-market has increased, but there was low usage of the term “competitiveness”. What was of key significance was that in the case of clustering articles by author nationality, the role of the origin of the author has decreased as a determinant factor, which could suggest the uniformity of terminology as well as similarity of research topics and the researcher’s interests, which can initialize cooperation and common research. The growth of the number of articles elaborated on by international teams is also a projection of this tendency.

The English language is the medium of instruction and knowledge deliverance in Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). This study looks into whether or not English writing skills affect the students’ performance in answering Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in the final examination of Molecular Biology (BIO615). The samples comprised BSc (Hons) Biology students from two consecutive semesters in two of UiTM campuses (UiTM Shah Alam and UiTM Jengka). Mean percentage between students answering the December 2015 and June 2016 final examinations in the respective campus was obtained and correlated with marks obtained in English for Academic Writing course (ELC550). The results demonstrated a weak correlation between students’ achievement in ELC550 and their ability in answering HOTS questions in BIO615 final examination in UiTM Shah Alam. In contrast, in UiTM Jengka, the moderate correlation was shown in Semester Sept-Jan 2015. The results of this study are hoped to assist biology educators in crafting appropriate and effective teaching approaches, especially in teaching complicated subjects as well as in strengthening English language proficiency.    Keywords: Higher Order Thinking Skills; Molecular Biology; English Proficiency; Bloom’s Taxonomy.    eISSN: 2398-4287 © 2020.
