Small publishing houses in Argentina. Their dynamism and limitations within the publishing industry

The goal of this article is to analyze the market insertion that small Argentine publishing houses underwent between the late twentieth century and 2015. We take into account the sector’s evolution in the country, the worldwide concentration of the publishing market, and the business strategies these firms adopted, from a historical standpoint. Sources are institutional and periodical publications, oral sources obtained through interviews with key actors, statistical sources, repository information, and secondary literature. Some comparisons with other Latin American countries are also presented. The conclusions highlight elements such as the publishing houses´accumulated historical experience, business strategies, speed of adaptation to digital and multimedia formats, production focused on specific areas or topics, and the leveraging of a minimal and flexible structure, many times in unfavorable circumstances, as key factors that allow a correct understanding of the complexities of the business of publishing for small and medium enterprises in Argentina.

The Latin American Publishing Circuit in the 21st Century: Following the Trajectory of César Aira

This essay poses a question about the identity of Latin American literature in the 21st century. In the 1960s and 1970s, the Latin America Boom received recognition both locally and internationally, becoming the dominant means of defining Latin American literature up to the present. This essay explores new ways to understand this notion of Latin America in the literary scene. The case of the Argentine writer César Aira is relevant for analyzing alternative publishing circuits that connect various points of the region. These publishing houses foster a defiant way of establishing the value of literature.

O conto português no século XXI: apontamentos sobre Teatro Vertical de Manuel Alberto Vieira / The Portuguese short-story in the 21st century: notes on Manuel Alberto Vieira’s Teatro Vertical

Resumo: A ficção portuguesa no século XXI parece inclinar-se maioritariamente para as distintas formas que autoriza o romance na pós-modernidade. Por razões de vária ordem, que vão desde a nossa tradição literária à criação de um mercado editorial que fomenta este género, os escritores surgidos após a passagem do milénio e publicados nas grandes casas editoriais portuguesas têm recorrido pouco ao conto. Em contrapartida, o trabalho realizado por editoras independentes tem trazido a lume outros possíveis caminhos para a ficção portuguesa que não desaguam no universo de tendências dominantes do mercado cada vez mais global (carácter mais universal da intriga, inclinação para mobilidade constante das personagens e dos espaços, alusões de natureza livresca, recusa a referências locais ou regionais, etc.). Neste sentido, este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar o contributo de Teatro Vertical, livro de contos de Manuel Alberto Vieira, que em sentido quase oposto às tendências dominantes, permite repensar a potencialidade do conto como género na atualidade, ao mesmo tempo que reconfigura um dos elementos mais problematizados da nossa sociedade: a família. Após uma breve contextualização da subalternização do género na nossa tradição literária, procura analisar-se a estrutura narrativa destes contos – partindo das reflexões de Ricardo Piglia sobre as formas breves –, assim como estudar o modo em que um dos temas dominantes, a família, é evidenciado nas suas complexas mutações através das estruturas mais simples, próprias do conto.Palavras-chave: Manuel Alberto Vieira; conto; narrativa; família; crueldade. Abstract: Portuguese fiction in the 21st century seems to lean mostly towards the different forms that authorize the novel in postmodernity. For various reasons, ranging from our literary tradition to the creation of an editorial market that fosters this genre, writers who emerged after the passing of the millennium and published in the major Portuguese publishing houses have made little use of the short-story. On the other hand, the work carried out by independent publishers has brought to light other paths for Portuguese fiction that do not lead to the universe of dominant trends in the increasingly global market (a more universal character of intrigue, inclination towards constant mobility of characters and spaces, allusions of a bookish nature, refusal of local or regional references, etc.). In this sense, this work intends to analyze the contribution of Teatro Vertical, a short story book by Manuel Alberto Vieira, which, in an almost opposite sense to the dominant trends, allows us to rethink the potential of the literary short-story as a genre today, while reconfiguring one of the elements most problematized in our society: the family. To this end, this work, after a brief contextualization of the subordination of gender in our literary tradition, seeks to analyze the narrative structure of these short-stories - based on Ricardo Piglia’s reflections on short forms - as well as studying the way in which one of the dominant themes, the family, is evidenced in its complex mutations through the simplest structures, typical of the short-story.Keywords: Manuel Alberto Vieira; short story; narrative; family; cruelty.

Image of Soviet and Russian logic in the West. Latter Half of the XXth Century

The article attempts to overview Western scientific knowledge of research in mathematical logic and its history in the USSR and Russia in the first half of the 20th century. We claim that Western scholars followed and were generally aware of the main works of their Soviet and Russian colleagues on mathematical logic and its history. It was possible, firstly, due to the fact that a number of Western scientists knew the Russian language, and, secondly, because Soviet and Russian logicians published their works in English (sometimes in German) in the original journals of mathematical logic or Soviet publishing houses (mainly Mir Publishers) translated Soviet authors into English. Thus, the names of A.G. Dragalin, Yu.L. Ershov, A.S. Karpenko, A.N. Kolmogorov, Z.A. Kuzicheva, Yu.I. Manin, S.Yu. Maslov, F.A. Medvedev, G.E. Mints, V.N. Salii, V.A. Smirnov, A.A. Stolyar, N.I. Styazhkin, V.A. Uspensky, I.M. Yaglom, S.A. Yanovskaya, A.P. Yushkevich, A.A. Zinov’ev were quite known to their Western counterparts. With the dawn of perestroika, contacts of Soviet / Russian logicians expanded significantly. Nevertheless, the analysis of Western works on mathematical logic and the history of logic suggests that by the end of the 20th century the interest of Western scientists in the works of their Russian colleagues had noticeably waned.

Evidenze, miti e prassi didattiche: il caso dell’insegnamento della lettura nella scuola italiana

This paper aims to take stock of the acquisitions achieved by evidence-based research on teaching to read, to compare them with the teaching practices, as they emerge from the school textbooks proposed by the publishing houses in Italy. Moving from the importance recently assumed by scientific research on effective teaching and the need to avoid risks and misunderstandings that can be generated for its use in practice, the evidence acquired about the teaching of reading and writing is presented, recalling the need to focus on the grapheme-phoneme correspondence to be acquired by children in a progressive, systematic and explicit way. It is then pointed out that the textbooks in use propose approaches in clear contrast with this finding. The second part focuses on the experimental researches conducted in Italy in recent years, congruent with the framework previously indicated, which achieve better effectiveness and high motivation in all pupils. Particular attention is paid to the national research conducted recently by the Association S.Ap.I.E.

Impact of recycling sustainability on organizational performance

This is empirical research focusing on the impact of recycling sustainability on Organizational performance in Nigeria. To achieve the objective of this study, a sample of 10 publishing houses in four major cities in Delta State was adopted, and these cities include Asaba, Warri, Sapele, and Oghara. Given that Nigeria is the regional publishing powerhouse in West Africa with newspaper publications selling in the whole region, likewise, textbook publishers in Nigeria dominate the regional market. The industry contributes about 10% of the GDP and is one of the fastest-growing in the manufacturing sector. Unfortunately, Nigeria does not produce most of the raw materials for publishing. All paper materials used in Nigeria are imported, and the costs are rising with the reliability of the sources dwindling. In addition, the publishing industry in Nigeria is faced with a high rate of waste and returns. The study focused on the impact of adopting recycling sustainability as a possible solution to the dwindling raw materials, increasing costs, and high rate of returns. It used a stratified random sampling approach and a descriptive research design.

COMMUNICATION MANAGEMENT IN PROMOTING KNOWLEDGE AND CREATIVITY IN FOSTERING INNOVATIONS IN THE CREATIVE ORGANIZATIONS

The topic of innovation is extremely important because it relates to the ability of organizations, urban regions and even states to remain competitive in today’s rapidly changing world. The problem for modern organizations is how to increase the scale and efficiency of innovation in modern organizations. One of the most striking modern trends that helps to generate innovation is the involvement of the organization’s stakeholders in the processes of value co-creation, encouraging their processes of collective cooperation, knowledge sharing and creative expression. Changing value creation processes are becoming a critical factor in creating innovation. Value creation has always been an essential foundation of any organization’s activities, but the targeted involvement of stakeholders in value creation is a relatively new phenomenon. The article presents a study, the aim of which is to investigate how and in what forms creative organizations – publishing houses – use the adaptability of their managed communication channels to encourage stakeholder involvement in value co-creation processes in innovation. Stakeholder involvement in the development of new ideas and projects, networking, collaboration, knowledge sharing, various non-formal learning opportunities, creation of discussion and feedback platforms as important drivers of stakeholder engagement are particularly important in fostering value-added processes in innovation.

Reproducibility and research integrity in applied linguistics

This preprint contains the text of a submission of written evidence to the UK Parliament, House of Commons Science and Technology Committee inquiry on reproducibility and research integrity (submitted: 24 September 2021. Viewable on the parliament website). In our review of the breadth of the reproducibility crisis within applied linguistics, we emphasise the necessity for full disclosure of data and code as well as full provision of experimental materials and protocols. We also highlight the critical role research funders have in supporting the field-specific open digital infrastructures which are needed to support research reproducibility. Finally, we call for a concerted effort to reduce the power of the large publishing houses and support society-led publishing efforts, and non-profit publication platforms.

Database of digital media publications on maternal (family) capital in Russia in 2006–2019

The database contains data from publications of digital Russian-language media registered in the Russian Federation on the topic of maternity capital published in the period from May 10, 2006 to June 30, 2019. The database includes general data on publications on maternity capital in .csv formats (UTF-8 encoding). Full texts of publications are presented in .xml format. A specialized request was generated for the aggregator of publications of Russian-language digital mass media public.ru. In total, the database consists of 457,888 publications of 7,665 publishing houses from 1,251 settlements located in 85 regions of Russia. The database includes information about the date and type of publication, publisher, place of publication (municipality), texts about maternity capital, and numbers of unique positive, negative, and neutral words and phrases according to the RuSentiLex2017 dictionary, as well as full texts of publications.

The Suppression of English Bards and Scotch Reviewers: An Unpublished Letter from Lord Holland to Samuel Rogers

This article faithfully reproduces a letter from Lord Holland to Samuel Rogers, including deletions, hyphenated words, underlines, and paragraphs, to evidence how Samuel Rogers interceded in the suppression of a fifth edition of Byron’s English Bards and Scotch Reviewers. Rogers’s knowledge of the publishing market, its publishing houses and successful authors, made him one of the most formidable and important of Byron’s acquaintances and contemporaries in the 1810s. This article demonstrates the important role of Rogers as an individual whose political negotiations and literary advice impacted the literary landscape of the Romantic period. The decision to suppress the fifth edition of English Bards also shows how Byron navigated literary and political opinion, as well as the role of sociability in the production and genetics of literary text. Professional authorship in the Romantic period was performed within this context of social networks.
