Purpose The purpose of this paper is to assess the motivations behind the merger of Heinz and Kraft. This merger, finalized on July 2nd, was one of the largest mergers to take place in 2015. Warren Buffet via Berkshire Hathaway and the Brazilian, Jorge Paulo Lemann, orchestrated the deal, at the headquarters of 3G Capital. What were the motivations and objectives of this merger? A few months after the deal, what measures have been introduced? Design/methodology/approach This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context. Findings It remains to be seen if the Berkshire Hathaway – 3G Capital partnership will continue and manage to achieve their predicted 1.5 billion dollars in cost reduction by the end of 2017. Such predictions should be taken with a grain of salt, given the fact that even though Heinz has improved its profitability, it is not yet on a path towards growth. In addition, it is worth asking whether customer demands for healthier products will permit Kraft to develop its sales, in particular outside of the USA. In any case, cost reduction will not be sufficient. Practical implications The paper provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world’s leading organizations. Originality/value The briefing saves busy executives and researchers hours of reading time by selecting only the very best, most pertinent information and presenting it in a condensed and easy-to-digest format.

Purpose This paper aims to review the latest management developments across the globe and pinpoint practical implications from cutting-edge research and case studies. Design/methodology/approach This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context. Findings Recent decades have witnessed growing concerns about obesity and serious medical conditions. These issues are especially prominent in the USA. One significant consequence is a stronger commitment toward improving health in the workplace. It is widely accepted that positive correlation exists between employee well-being and productivity. The reverse is also true though. Chronic disease among the workforce invariably affects the organization’s ability to compete with its rivals. An inevitable rise in healthcare costs further heightens the negative fallout. Practical implications The paper provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world’s leading organizations. Originality/value The briefing saves busy executives and researchers hours of reading time by selecting only the very best, most pertinent, information and presenting it in a condensed and easy-to-digest format.

Findings This research paper concentrates on the advertised job profiles of lean management professionals in the USA, UK and Germany, with the aim of providing a framework of commonly required competencies. Comparing results between the three countries reveals both similarities and differences in skill preferences, for example US-based companies are far more focused on project administration, and German companies place low priority on leadership skills. Design/methodology/approach This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context. Findings For many young managers and strategists, few of them will realize just how mighty Japan and its firms were in the 1990s. As the world’s second biggest economy, it saw many of its firms lead their industries in both size and innovation – Toyota and Sony being just two examples – so that they genuinely threatened to overtake the USA and its preeminence. Indeed, when Toyota finally overtook General Motors as the world’s biggest car manufacturer, the effect was felt through Detroit and beyond. Further stories about the similar rise in the price of Tokyo real estate became legendary as well – for example that the well-heeled district of Ginza in central Tokyo was worth more than the whole of California. Practical Implications The paper provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world’s leading organizations. Findings Who has been the biggest sports star to emerge from China in the past century? For many countries, this would be a tough question, given the sheer variety of sports played and number of talents to grace the international stage. From Australia? Rod Laver, Don Bradman and David Campese would all be in with a shout. For France? Zinedine Zidane or Michel Platine were both huge. For the USA? Well, where do you start – Michael Jordan, Joe Montana or Babe Ruth were all massive stars for its three major sports. From China? Well that is actually a straightforward one – Yao Ming was a huge international sports star (in more ways than one). And what all these people had in common was that they were hugely marketable assets for their sponsors. Design/methodology/approach This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context. Findings Recent decades have witnessed substantial growth in the number of female workers in the USA. At the mid-point of the twentieth century, 33.9 per cent of women participated in the labor force. Records confirm that this figure had risen to 57.7 per cent by 2012. A similar picture prevails where education is concerned. Take graduate degrees, for example. Women presently account for well over one-third of all the MBAs awarded in the USA. Back in the 1970s, this figure was just 5 per cent. On the basis of such trends, one might reasonably expect to see a considerable number of females leading business organizations. Not so. Practical implications The paper provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world’s leading organizations. Findings – The business fraternity rightly acknowledges the importance of Generation Y consumers. Also referred to as Millennials, this group consists of around 83 million members in the USA alone and is the largest since the Baby Boomers. Successfully segmenting such a vast consumer cohort is clearly a daunting task for any marketer. Generation Y consumers are somewhat unique compared to preceding segments. Findings – After all the dust has settled from the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, one fact that will be “chewed on” (with apologies to certain Italian defenders), is that the team with the most visiting fans during the festival of football was not neighbors Uruguay, nor was it football-crazy countries such as Columbia or Argentina who are close by. It was actually the USA, whose team progressed well and, if viewing figures are anything to go by, may have finally “got” soccerball, or whatever they call it these days. Design/methodology/approach This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context. Findings The problem with developing a reputation of being something of an oracle in the business world is that all of a sudden, everyone expects you to pull off the trick of interpreting the future on a daily basis. Like a freak show circus act or one-hit wonder pop singer, people expect you to perform when they see you, and they expect you to perform the thing that made you famous, even if it is the one thing in the world you don’t want to do. And when you fail to deliver on these heightened expectations, you are dismissed as a one trick pony, however good that trick is in the first place.
