This article presents a monocular-based navigation approach for unmanned aerial vehicle safe and continuous inspection along one side of transmission lines. To this end, a navigation model based on the transmission tower and the transmission-line vanishing point was proposed, and the following three key issues were addressed. First, a deep-learning-based object detection and a fast and smooth tracking algorithm based on the kernelized correlation filter were combined to locate transmission tower timely and reliably. Second, the vanishing point of transmission lines was computed and optimized to provide unmanned aerial vehicle with a robust and precise flight direction. Third, to keep a stable safe distance from transmission lines, the transmission lines were first rectified by optimizing a homography matrix to eliminate the parallel distortion, and then their interval variation was estimated for reflecting the spatial distance variation. Finally, the real distance from transmission tower was measured by the triangulation across multiple views. The proposed navigation approach and the designed UAV platform were tested in a field environment, which achieved an encouraging result. To the best of authors’ knowledge, this article marks the first time that a safe and continuous navigation approach along one side of transmission lines is put forward and implemented.

In the UHV AC transmission lines will be rapid development momentum of main frame China grid, inspection of UHV transmission line for the realization of unmanned aircraft utility, this article makes an analysis for the structure characteristics and defects of the UHV transmission line , finds out the defect characteristics, and summarizes the characteristics of the UAV and inspection instrument. According to the characteristic of UHV defect, we display its properties of unmanned aerial vehicles and inspection instrument, construct the application mode of four kinds of unmanned aerial vehicle inspection, and have a description for each model.

As the biggest country in power consumption and generation, China owns the largest scale of transmission line worldwide. The application of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in inspection has been carried out for many years in China because of its strong adaptability and safety compared to the traditional manual way. For the further development of UAV application technology in transmission line inspection, China has accumulated rich experiences and greatly improved line inspection efficiency and formed a relatively complete UAV transmission line inspection standardization system including operation safety management, an equipment configuration method, and functional quality requirements. However, there still exist some obstacles that need to be tackled due to the fact that China’s UAV transmission line inspection standardization and its international promotion have not been thoroughly and comprehensively studied at present. Based on an in-depth analysis of China’s current UAV transmission line inspection standardization system, this study employs SWOT-PEST analysis to insightfully investigate international promotion opportunities/challenges under the current situation, upon which several constructive suggestions are proposed from four aspects of politics, economy, society, and technology. The ultimate purpose is to design feasible schemes to boost the international promotion of China’s UAV transmission line inspection standardization and further development of international UAV inspection technology.

The Greek islands of Crete and Rhodes are equipped with isolated transmission systems that fall under the jurisdiction of the Islands Network Operation Department of HEDNO S. A., which carries out their operation and maintenance on behalf of PPC S.A. After 2016, the Transmission Line Operation and Maintenance Subsection of the Department, started to incorporate new approaches to improve the routine work of the subsection. These approaches include Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (drone) inspections, GIS/GPS software/applications and project management/issue tracking tools such as Mantis Bug Tracker (or MantisBT. This paper provides a brief review of the maintenance practices in combination with the properties and peculiarities of the specific systems, and further investigates the MantisBT records from 2016 to 2020, in order to provide a view of the routine work of transmission line maintenance through the case studies of Crete and Rhodes. It should be noted that the majority of these issues are related to the Cretan transmission system and thus, this paper also aims to provide a screenshot of the situation before the interconnection of the isolated Cretan Transmission System to the mainland system, expected to initiate in 2021.
