Intensive manual labor enterprises in the developed world face challenges competing with products imported from countries where manufacturing costs are low. This reduces the volume of domestic production and leads to rapid loss of knowledge and experience in production processes. This study focuses on the Israeli footwear industry as a case study. Qualitative methodologies were applied, including in-depth interviews and field observations. A literature review on previous research, and contemporary trends was conducted. The field research examines challenges along the value chain in small factories. It finds that mass production paradigms impose a decentralized process between designers and manufacturers and therefore do not leverage local potential into a sustainable competitive advantage for small factories. The proposed solution is a digital and technological platform for small manufacturing plants. The platform mediates and designs the connections between production, technology, and design and enables the creation of a joint R&D system.

Foundries in manufacturing plants are characterized by hazardous working conditions. The paper makes an assessment of industrial health hazards, identifies groups of diseases dominant among the examined individuals. It is clear that gastrointestinal diseases make the largest percentage. The effect of destabilizing industrial factors that lead to the intestinal biome restructuring, help reduce the dominant microorganism’s group and increase opportunistic flora has been determined. The severity of this indicator correlates with professional working experience. Along with the fecal matter bacterial flora of the examined people, the protozoa that belong to the parasitic group (blastocysts, lamblia, amoeba) were identified, and Blastocystis spp. has the largest proportion. The biological properties of blastocysts were studied exemplified by anticarnosine activity (AcrA), which allows them to colonize the intestinal mucous membranes and helps displace obligate symbiotes against the decrease in the overall resistance of the macroorganism. The data obtained make it possible to forecast human health state under the conditions of anthropogenic-disturbed territories and plan measures to improve and protect workers’ health.

Nine strains of yeasts capable of decomposing oil were isolated in order to directly treat wastewater from oil manufacturing plants with no pretreatment. The oil decomposing ability of these yeast strains was evaluated in terms of lipase activity and β-oxidation activity. Since the mixture of the isolated yeasts was superior to any single strain in the oil removal rate, a pilot plant utilizing the mixed strains was operated at the soybean oil factory. Following a one year pilot plant operation, it was found that 10,000 mgℓ−1 of hexane extracts in the raw wastewater could be reduced by yeast treatment to a concentration of about 100 mgℓ−1. This concentration was further treated by the activated sludge process to 2 mgℓ−1. The dominant yeasts in the pilot plant were found to form mycelial or pseudomycelial pellets and have low fermenting ability.

The overexploitation of groundwater in China has raised concern, as it has caused a series of environmental and ecological problems. However, far too little attention has been paid to the relationship between groundwater use and the spatial distribution of water users, especially that of manufacturing factories. In this study, a factory scatter index (FSI) was constructed to represent the spatial dispersion degree of manufacturing factories in China. It was found that counties and border areas between neighboring provinces registered the highest FSI increases. Further non-spatial and spatial regression models using 205 provincial-level secondary river basins in China from 2016 showed that the scattered distribution of manufacturing plants played a key role in groundwater withdrawal in China, especially in areas with a fragile ecological environment. The scattered distribution of manufacturing plants raises the cost of tap water transmission, makes monitoring and supervision more difficult, and increases the possibility of surface water pollution, thereby intensifying groundwater withdrawal. A reasonable spatial adjustment of manufacturing industry through planning and management can reduce groundwater withdrawal and realize the protection of groundwater. Our study may provide a basis for water-demand management through spatial adjustment in areas with high water scarcity and a fragile ecological environment.

The COVID-19 incidence in 61 manufacturing plants in Europe (EU), North America (NA) and Latin-America (LATAM) was compared with the incidence observed in the countries where the plants are located in order to evaluate the application of an innovative model for COVID-19 risk management. Firstly, a network of local and global teams was created, including an external university occupational physician team for scientific support. In July 2020, global prevention guidelines for the homogenous management of the pandemic were applied, replacing different site or regional procedures. A tool for COVID-19 monitoring was implemented to investigate the relationship between the incidence rates inside and outside the plants. In the period of May–November 2020, 565 confirmed cases (EU 330, NA 141, LATAM 94) were observed among 20,646 workers with different jobs and tasks, and in the last two months 85% EU and 70% NA cases were recorded. Only in 10% of cases was a possible internal origin of the contagion not excluded. In the EU and NA, unlike LATAM, the COVID-19 incidence rates inside the sites punctually followed the rising trend outside. In conclusion, the model, combining a global approach with the local application of the measures, maintains the sustainability in the manufacturing industry.
