A static frequency converter start-up control strategy for pumped-storage power unit is presented. And rotor position detecting without position sensor is realized according to voltage and magnetism equations of ideal synchronous motor mathematics model. The mechanism and implementation method of initial rotor position determination and rotor position estimation under low frequency without position sensor are expounded and validated by simulations. Based on the mentioned control strategy, first set of a static frequency converter start-up device in China for large-scale pumped-storage unit is developed, which is applied to start-up control test in the 90 MW generator/motor of Panjiakou Pumped-storage Power Plant. Test results show that rotor position detecting, pulse commutation, natural commutation, and unit synchronous procedure control of static start-up are all proved. The outcomes have been applied in running equipment, which proves the feasibility of mentioned method.

The increasing penetration of variable renewable energies (VRE) in the European electricity mix requires flexible energy storage systems (ESS), such as pumped storage hydropower (PSH). Disused mining voids from deep closed mines may be used as subsurface reservoirs of underground pumped-storage hydropower (UPSH) plants. Unlike conventional PSH plants, the air pressure in UPSH plants is variable and it differs from the atmospheric conditions. In this paper, the hydraulic transient process of an UPSH plant operating in pumping mode was investigated and a preliminary thermodynamic analysis of the closed surge tank was carried out. Analytical and CFD three-dimensional numerical simulations based on the volume of fluid (VOF) model with two-phase flow have been performed for analyzing the transient process. In the transient simulation, air and water are considered as ideal gas and compressible liquid, respectively. Different guide vanes closing schemes have been simulated. The obtained results show that the dimensioning of underground reservoir, surge tank, and air ducts is essential for ensuring the hydraulic performance and optimizing the operation of UPSH plants. The static pressure in the air duct, surge tank and lower reservoir reaches −1.6, 112.8 and −4 kPa, respectively, while a heat flux of −80 W was obtained through the surge tank walls.

Compared with conventional hydropower units, the pumped storage unit has the characteristics of diverse working conditions and frequent switching. Therefore, the stability and regulation quality of the primary frequency modulation transition process of the regulating system is very important. Due to the “S” characteristics of the pumped storage unit (PSU), the pumped storage unit regulating system has a strong nonlinearity, and the conventional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller cannot provide high-quality control under low water head conditions. In this paper, the nonlinear PSU model with an elastic water hammer effect is studied, and the fuzzy fractional-order PID (FFOPID) controller is designed to improve the stability of the system. The membership function and the control parameters of the fractional-order PID are optimized based on the multi-objective gravitational search algorithm (MOGSA). The experimental results show that the optimized design of the FFOPID controller has better control quality than the traditional PID controller, the fractional-order PID (FOPID) controller, and the fuzzy PID controller (FPID) when the system is disturbed by the rotating speed under low water head.
