AbstractThe dual laser-produced plasma technique for the study of ionic absorption spectra has been developed by the use of two Q-switched ruby lasers to enable independent generation of the absorbing and back-lighting plasmas. Optical pulse handling is used in the coupling cicuits to enable reproducible pulse delays from 250 nsec. to 10 msec, to be achieved. At delay times > 700 nsec. spectra of essentially pure neutral species are observed. The technique is valuable, not only for obtaining the neutral spectra of highly refractory and/or corrosive materials but also for studying behaviour of ionic species as a function of time. Typical spectra are shown in Fig. 1.

Binaurally asynchronous delayed auditory feedback (DAF) was compared with synchronous DAF in 80 normal subjects. Asynchronous DAF (0.10 sec difference) did not yield results different from those obtained under synchronous DAF with a 0.20 sec delay interval, an interval characteristically resulting in maximum disruptions in speech.

Abstract Diffusing wave spectroscopy (DWS) in the backscattering geometry was employed to observe the evolution of the intensity correlation function during the acidification of skimmed milk by gluconic-δ-lactone (GDL). At the stage when the formation of casein particle gel is largely complete the correlation function at shorter decay times reveals the local structural arrest of the casein micelles, whereas at longer delay times it illustrates the hindered slow motion of casein micelle aggregates. We use the principles of the approach suggested by Mason, Gang and Weitz, linking the optically measured mean square displacement, <Δr2(t)>, of the microscopic particles in a dense colloid to its viscoelastic properties, to provide an estimate of the frequency dependent viscoelastic modulus of the acidified milk gel (AMG). We compare the viscoelastic moduli measured by the conventional mechanical rheometry with the optically measured ones. The results of the two different experimental methods are found to be in reasonable agreement.

This paper describes how one can reduce the memory access time with pre-emphasis (PE) pulses even in non-volatile random-access memory. Optimum PE pulse widths and resultant minimum word-line (WL) delay times are investigated as a function of column address. The impact of the process variation in the time constant of WL, the cell current, and the resistance of deciding path on optimum PE pulses are discussed. Optimum PE pulse widths and resultant minimum WL delay times are modeled with fitting curves as a function of column address of the accessed memory cell, which provides designers with the ability to set the optimum timing for WL and BL (bit-line) operations, reducing average memory access time.

Delayed discharges due to electrical breakdown are observed in modulated pulsed pow er magnetron sputtering (MPPMS) plasma of titanium. The delayed discharge, which is remarkable with decreasing argon gas pressure, transforms the discharge current waveform from a standard modulated pulsed discharge current waveform to a comb-like discharge current waveform consisting of several pulses with high power. In addition, the delay times, consisting of statistical times and formative times in the delayed MPPMS discharges, are experimentally measured with the help of Laue plot analysis. The pressure dependence of delay times observed indicates that the delayed discharge behavior matches the breakdown characteristics well. In the present study, the delayed discharge dynamics of the comb-like discharge current waveform, which can be the origin of deep oscillation magnetron sputtering, are investigated based on measurement of the delay times and the characteristics of discharge current waveforms.

AbstractEmploying Eggleton's stellar evolution code and assuming optically thick winds, we systematically studied the He star donor channel of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), in which a carbon-oxygen white dwarf (WD) accretes material from a He main-sequence star or a He subgiant to increase its mass to the Chandrasekhar mass. We mapped out the initial parameters for producing SNe Ia in the orbital period–secondary mass plane for various WD masses from this channel. Based on a detailed binary population synthesis approach, we find that this channel can produce SNe Ia with short delay times (~100 Myr) implied by recent observations. We derived many properties of the surviving companions of this channel after SN explosion, which can be tested by future observations. We also find that the surviving companions from the SN explosion scenario have a high spatial velocity (>400 km/s), which could be an alternative origin for hypervelocity stars (HVSs), especially for HVSs such as US 708.
