Since the expression "Building Information Modeling" (BIM) was initially presented in the Engineering and Construction AEC industry in the most recent decade; it has changed numerous parts of the design, construction, and operation of a building. BIM is a middleware connector that represents the advancement and utilization of PC. BIM has various frameworks which have been conducted by the pioneers in the BIM industry to enhance the BIM process. There is a study of the reflection of those frameworks on the Egyptian AEC industry to overcome the threats that prevent Egypt from applying BIM technology more broadly. In addition, a comparison is conducted between the successful countries which implemented BIM in their projects and managed to enhance their adoption by examining the local challenges and targets. The countries then made strategies and standards to overcome the aforementioned obstacles. Furthermore, successful actions were applied that can match with the Egyptian industrial requirements. This paper is expected to define the challenges which are facing the Egyptian industry to apply BIM and the potential capabilities of solving those problems. To acquire the vital information to carry on this paper, a questionnaire was created and distributed in the AEC community. The reason for the study was to see how experts consider BIM as a device in the fields of design and construction in general and in the Egyptian industry particularly. The aim of this paper is to propose a framework through several case studies which are discussed, analyzed and compared. The purpose of the analysis is to explore the importance of using BIM. Additionally, exploring the effect of different parameters on implementing BIM helped significantly during the process. It starts with proposing its framework with evaluating matrix that contains attributes to measure its success, moreover, it serves as a great help to the Egyptian companies that make real business decisions about enhancing BIM implementation through this framework.

This paper presents our initial study on Building Information Modeling (BIM) adoption urgency for architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry in Indonesia. Currently, BIM is being adopted by many countries around the world because of its’ efficiency and other benefits. Meanwhile, most of AEC industries in Indonesia still using the conventional method and there are no regulations from Indonesian AEC authority for adopting BIM. With that situation, a study of BIM adoption in Indonesian AEC industries is important. This study uses a qualitative approach with explorative type. Input from the survey is evaluated qualitatively using content analysis, distribution analysis and correspondence analysis method. Based on analysis result, it shows that BIM as a mean to encourage a more sustainable approach in AEC industry is still in its development phase but it shows great potentials and it gives stakeholders a better way to achieve sustainable built environment. Current lack of awareness and understanding of BIM in Indonesia, particularly in the education sector, is a key factor that impedes BIM adoption and one that can be addressed by integrating BIM into AEC curriculum. Government and practitioners alike need to develop a strategic roadmap to pave way for successful BIM implementation.

PurposeWith the increasing attention acquired from researchers and practitioners in Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry, building information modeling (BIM) has fundamentally changed the approach we design, construct and delivery, as well as operate and maintenance of buildings and civil infrastructures. This study tries to provide an innovative perspective on BIM research. This study aims to analyze the necessity and feasibility of BIM user satisfaction research and define what BIM user satisfaction is, and then to develop a quantitative method for the measurement of BIM user satisfaction.Design/methodology/approachAs it is indicated in the content, BIM user satisfaction is measured by the sum of the user's weighted reactions to a set of factors. To be specific, the entropy method was adopted to calculate the “weighting” of the factors, and the triangular fuzzy number (TFN) method was selected to compute the “scoring” of the factors. Through the literature review, methodology and tool development, as well as case study and discussions, this paper was generated sequentially.FindingsThis study found that the proposed tool for the measurement of BIM success is valid and reliable; it formerly translated the conceptual definition of BIM user satisfaction into an accurate measurement instrument. It also indicated that many factors are affecting the BIM users' satisfaction, and each of the factors inherited various importance and score, and the findings are expected to improve the performance and effectiveness of BIM management.Originality/valueThrough the translation of the conceptual BIM user satisfaction into a valid quantitative measurement instrument, this research provides an excellent framework for the management of BIM from the user's perspective, and it could help to stimulate user's acceptance of BIM in the AEC industry in future.

Purpose – The Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry is considered the most effective contributor to development in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). However, the AEC industry is facing myriad challenges due to the vast construction development required for the KSA 2030 vision. Developed countries are using Building Information Modeling (BIM) to mitigate these challenges and reap the benefits of implementing BIM to improve the performance of the AEC industry profoundly. However, BIM is currently rarely used in the KSA. This study aims to develop a methodology to implement BIM in the KSA by exploring stakeholders’ perception of factors affecting the implementation. Design/methodology/approach – BIM users and non-users were surveyed by means of a questionnaire and structured interviews. The proposed methodology was validated through a further survey and structured interviews with BIM experts. Findings – This study proposes a six-step methodology to implement BIM namely; raising awareness; perceived benefits; AEC industry readiness, and organizations’ capability; identifying the barriers; removing the barriers; and defining the key factors influencing the implementation. Practical implications – The proposed methodology is expected to assist project participants in KSA to implement BIM to solve current AEC industry issues, improve projects’ performance and reap the benefits of implementing BIM. Originality/value – This study makes a crucial and novel contribution by providing a new methodology to implement BIM in KSA that motivates decision-makers and project players to adopt and implement BIM in their projects. It paves the way to develop BIM guidance and strategies.

There has been growing concern about the efficiency of the Australian construction industry. It has been identified that inefficiencies due to industry fragmentation has significant impacts on the way construction projects are delivered. It is largely believed that Building Information Modeling (BIM) has the potential to significantly improve the efficiency of a project throughout its entire lifecycle. The main focus of BIM research has, up until now, been principally focused on its ever increasing use in the design phase of a project. The construction phase of a project has been largely overlooked, particularly the implementation of BIM during this phase of a project.. A mixed method approach has been utilised in this study comprising of quantitative and qualitative techniques. The quantitative method was conducted through the distribution of a statistically analysed questionnaire survey to a sample population of construction professionals within Australia. Concurrently, the qualitative method of analysis is conducted through case studies of selected construction projects with some involvement of BIM. Through the research, it was proven that Australian construction projects are far from the full utilisation of BIM as a construction management tool. The factors affecting BIM’s utilisation were also discovered in this research and validated through statistical analysis of the population data found by the questionnaire survey.

AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industries are in the process of paradigm shift on the performance of practice, particularly in the fields of architects, consulting engineers such as structural engineers for structural BIM, civil engineers, MEP engineers, and contractors led by Building Information Modeling (BIM). Overall adoption of BIM in the AEC industries of North America has increased from 17% in 2007 to 71% in 2012 which is over 400% growth over last 5 years. This study analyzes and examines the BIM adoption status of AEC industry in the world including the North America and in the R.O. Korea through the literature survey. This study also examines how academic community is preparing for the drastic cultural change of work process in the construction industry due to BIM adoption in the foreign and domestic AEC industry. This paper presents the case study of BIM education including Capstone Design in the R.O. Korea. This study is to propose that academia needs to establish the appropriate educational curriculum and implementation to enhance, improve and research the state of art BIM technology together with AEC industry.

The construction industry of Malaysia is very dynamic in nature and the adoption of new technological advancements and construction methods has been a prime concerns for its key players and stakeholders. However, the adoption of BIM in such a dynamic industry is observed to be limited and its implementation has not been as successful as it should have been. The study focuses on the identification and prioritization the factors challenging the implementation of BIM in Malaysian construction industry. The data has been administrated through designed questionnaire by identifying the factors / barriers, by literature review, for implementation of BIM in construction industry. The prioritization of such factors is expected to help the major stake holders to address the issues according to their priority which will save lot of previous time and financial with smooth implementation of BIM in Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry in future project.

The adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM) constitutes a paradigm shift in the architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) industry. Broader BIM adoption will transform construction processes to achieve greater efficiency to improve the quality of life (QOL) of construction stakeholders. This paper seeks to identify determinant factors and implementation gaps of BIM in the AEC industry.  A case study was conducted through a preliminary workshop organised by CIDB among the five potential stakeholders from Malaysian public and private.
