The design method on bicycle’s functional elements proposed by this research is based on analysis on the winning work in the Global Bicycle Design Competition. Via analyzing its creative design on functional elements, our study is aimed to establish a creative design method on bicycle for designers to develop lots of creative ideas at the concept development stage. This research is divided into three stages, including analysis on bicycle’s creative design elements, construction of creative design method flow on bicycle’s functional elements, and case study on design prototype. For analysis on bicycle’s creative design elements, we have come up with a symbol table of bicycle’s creative functional elements (CFEs). As to construction of creative design method flow on bicycle’s functional elements, we first asked the designer to describe his/her design theme, and then picked bicycle’s CFEs according to the contents described. After CFEs were picked, we then conducted the space position arrangement of functional element symbols. Based on designer’s requirements, we produced several kinds of space arrangements on CFEs, and then we designed a new bicycle by referring to the symbol table of bicycle’s CFEs acquired. In the final step, we followed the flowchart of bicycle’s CFEs constructed by this research, and proceeded a case study prototype design.

With the sharpness of market competition, the design of automobile outline becomes more and more important. By far, no systematic method can direct designers to carry out creative design orderly. In fact, most of the instances are created by designers’ cerebrum independently. The rise of the evolution computation provides us a new approach for conceptual creative design; therefore, it has become one of the most important techniques for computational and creative design. This paper pays more attention to the computer aided environment in the automobile outline design, proposes the automobile outline modularization design method and classifies component base into two categories. This method stores the data in the format of XML, which can save great memory and amount of rebuild component time.

To study the creative design method for slope greening, introduced extension theory and method, took the method of new concept slope design as breakthrough point, and analyzed the feasibility and method of highway rock slope creative design using extension method. Case analysis shows that applying extension method to new concept slope design is appropriate and feasible; it can reduce the dependence on experience, inspiration and other individual ability of the creative design process. This method is expected to be used in the whole new concept highway design after further studying.

Sandwich structures are important innovative multifunctional structures with the advantages of low density and high performance. Creative design for sandwich structures is a design process based on sandwich core structure evolution mechanisms, material design method, and panel (including core structure and facing sheets) performance prediction model. The review outlines recent research efforts on creative design for sandwich structures with different core constructions such as corrugated core, honeycomb core, foam core, truss core, and folded cores. The topics discussed in this review article include aspects of sandwich core structure design, material design, and mechanical properties, and panel performance and damage. In addition, examples of engineering applications of sandwich structures are discussed. Further research directions and potential applications are summarized.

This paper aims to develop an effective and widely applicable creative design method. First, the relationships of integration between systematic inventive thinking (SIT) and theory of constraints (TOC) were analyzed. According to the analysis, a new model of SIT based on TOC was constructed. Next, the detailed creative design steps of this method were explained and a strategy to upgrade an old system or develop new systems based on an existing one was proposed in terms of this creative method. Then, an example was demonstrated to validate the method. This proposed creative design method is different from conventional approaches, which uses the elements in the design environment, and introduction of new element is avoided.
