The design method on bicycle’s functional elements proposed by this research is based on analysis on the winning work in the Global Bicycle Design Competition. Via analyzing its creative design on functional elements, our study is aimed to establish a creative design method on bicycle for designers to develop lots of creative ideas at the concept development stage. This research is divided into three stages, including analysis on bicycle’s creative design elements, construction of creative design method flow on bicycle’s functional elements, and case study on design prototype. For analysis on bicycle’s creative design elements, we have come up with a symbol table of bicycle’s creative functional elements (CFEs). As to construction of creative design method flow on bicycle’s functional elements, we first asked the designer to describe his/her design theme, and then picked bicycle’s CFEs according to the contents described. After CFEs were picked, we then conducted the space position arrangement of functional element symbols. Based on designer’s requirements, we produced several kinds of space arrangements on CFEs, and then we designed a new bicycle by referring to the symbol table of bicycle’s CFEs acquired. In the final step, we followed the flowchart of bicycle’s CFEs constructed by this research, and proceeded a case study prototype design.

Abstract This paper presents a methodology for generating conceptual designs of structural shapes and functional elements of machine systems from initial conditions having no preconceived information. Firstly, a feasible design region initially containing nothing is defined. The whole feasible region which is uniformly filled up with finite elements having an extremely low rigidity is here assumed to be a region containing nothing. Then, a seed element grows into a whole structural system in the feasible design region by conducting both the creation of external shapes and the growth of the inner structures. Next, the design method is advanced so that a functional element of a rotational joint is also generated with the structural shapes simultaneously. Finally, the proposed conceptual design method is applied to design of industrial robots.

A novel approach to bicycle design for handling qualities is presented. The design method is introduced through a case study in which a new front-wheel drive recumbent bicycle is developed. Since there exists no proper definition nor assessment for bicycle handling qualities, design process is based on comparing the uncontrolled dynamics of the new concepts to an existing design, known to handle well. A prototype was built and road test were conducted to compare the handling before being taken into production. The new design shows comparable handling.

One example of the growing information technology today is mobile learning, mobile learning which refers to mobile technology as a learning medium. Mobile learning is learning that is unique for each student to access learning materials anywhere, anytime. Mobile learning is suitable as a model of learning for the students to make it easier to get an understanding of a given subject, such as math is pretty complicated and always using formulas.The design method that I use is the case study method, namely, learning, searching and collecting data related to the study. While the development of engineering design software application programs that will be used by the author is the method of Rapid Application Development (RAD), which consists of 4 stages: Requirements Planning Phase, User Design Phase, Construction Phase and Phase Cotuver.

The design methodologies and part shape algorithms for additive manufacturing (AM) are rapidly growing fields, proven to be of critical importance for the uptake of additive manufacturing of parts with enhanced performance in all major industrial sectors. The current trend for part design is a computationally driven approach where the parts are algorithmically morphed to meet the functional requirements with optimized performance in terms of material distribution. However, the manufacturability restrictions of AM processes are not considered at the primary design phases but at a later post-morphed stage of the part’s design. This paper proposes an AM design method to ensure: (1) optimized material distribution based on the load case and (2) the part’s manufacturability. The buildability restrictions from the direct energy deposition (DED) AM technology were used as input to the AM shaping algorithm to grant high AM manufacturability. The first step of this work was to define the term of AM manufacturability, its effect on AM production, and to propose a framework to estimate the quantified value of AM manufacturability for the given part design. Moreover, an AM design method is proposed, based on the developed internal stresses of the build volume for the load case. Stress tensors are used for the determination of the build orientation and as input for the part morphing. A top-down mesoscale geometric optimization is used to realize the AM part design. The DED Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) rules are used to delimitate the morphing of the part, representing at the same time the freeform mindset of the AM technology. The morphed shape of the part is optimized in terms of topology and AM manufacturability. The topology optimization and AM manufacturability indicator (TMI) is introduced to screen the percentage of design elements that serve topology optimization and the ones that serve AM manufacturability. In the end, a case study for proof of concept is realized.

This paper discusses a case study of a design and evaluation of a change management system at a large Telecommunications Corporation. The design and evaluation were done using the facilitated genetic algorithm (a parallel design method) and user decision style analysis. During the facilitated genetic algorithm the design team followed the procedure of the genetic algorithm. Usability was evaluated by applying user decision style analysis to the designed system. The design is compared with an existing system and with one designed by an analyst. The change management system designed by the facilitated genetic algorithm took less time to design and decision style analysis indicated it would be easier to use than the other two systems.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the main activities that startups outsource and the elements involved in outsourcing decisions. Design/methodology/approach A multi-case study composed of Brazilian startups was conducted. Data through interviews and secondary sources were obtained. Two groups of startups were considered and analyzed comparatively: startups in the development stage and in the sales stage. Findings The findings show that even though the literature suggests that the core business should not be outsourced, some startups do have to outsource this kind of activity. That was the main difference found between startups in the sales stage and in the development stage: the former group has a solid structure, knowledge and resources, so they can keep the core business inside the firm; whereas the latter group has little experience, scarce knowledge and resources, making outsourcing a more attractive alternative. Originality/value Theoretically, this paper approaches a perspective underexplored in the innovation and management literature: outsourcing in startups. It highlights how outsourcing, as a decision between making and buying, can help startups to improve success potential. In practice, this paper discusses and demonstrates why and what can be outsourced by startups in the development and in the sales stages to overcome their limitations and, consequently, achieve better innovative results.

In survey research, vignette experiments typically employ short, systematically varied descriptions of situations or persons (called vignettes) to elicit the beliefs, attitudes, or behaviors of respondents with respect to the presented scenarios. Using a case study on the fair gender income gap in Austria, we discuss how different design elements can be used to increase a vignette experiment’s validity and reliability. With respect to the experimental design, the design elements considered include a confounded factorial design, a between-subjects factor, anchoring vignettes, and blocking by respondent strata and interviewers. The design elements for the sampling and survey design consist of stratification, covariate measurements, and the systematic assignment of vignette sets to respondents and interviewers. Moreover, the vignettes’ construct validity is empirically validated with respect to the real gender income gap in Austria. We demonstrate how a broad range of design elements can successfully increase a vignette study’s validity and reliability.
