The properties of modified Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 (BNT) based lead-free ceramics were investigated. The BNT-based ceramics were prepared by a two-steps sintering method. The ceramics were sintered at T1=1373 K and T2= 1173 K for various dwell times (0, 2, 4, and 8h). The properties of the ceramics were characterized by many techniques. The ceramic samples exhibited a pure perovskite phase with rhombohedral symmetry. The microstructural analysis by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM), indicated that all ceramics had a similar microstructure. Piezoelectric and mechanical properties of the ceramics were improved at a suitable dwell time at T2.

3D uniform Bi2S3 chrysanthemum-like microspheres with 1D nanowire-assembly were prepared through a facile one-step hydrothermal route, using poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) as a soft template, and Bi(NO3)3 and thiourea as Bi and S sources, respectively. PVP molecules played an important role in the formation of uniform 3D Bi2S3 nanostructures. The reasonable formation mechanism of uniform chrysanthemum-shaped Bi2S3 microspheres was also proposed. Photovoltaic properties were studied preliminarily to demonstrate potential application in dye-sensitised solar cells for the replacement of scarce platinum as counter electrode.

A dense nanostructured 2HfB2-SiC composite was simultaneously synthesized and consolidated by the pulsed current activated sintering method in one step within very short time (two minutes) from mechanically activated 2Hf, B4C and Si powders. Simultaneous combustion synthesis and consolidation were achieved through the combination of the effects of the pulsed current and mechanical pressure. A highly dense 2HfB2–SiC composite with 97.5% relative density was achieved under the simultaneous application of a pressure of 80 MPa and the pulsed current. The fracture toughness of the 2HfB2–SiC composite was higher than that of monolithic HfB2.
