This paper describes the proportional integral (PI) control of hybrid squeeze film dampers (HSFDS) for active control of rotor vibrations. Recently it was shown that the automatically controlled HSFD based on feedback of rotor speed can be a very efficient device for active control of rotor vibration when passing through critical speeds. Although considerable effort has been put into the study of steady-state vibration control, there are few methods in the literature applicable to transient vibration control of rotor-bearing systems. Rotating machinery may experience dangerously high dynamic loading due to the sudden mass unbalance that could be associated with blade loss. Transient run-up and coast down through critical speeds when starting up or shutting down rotating machinery induces excessive bearing loads at criticals. In this paper, PI control is proposed as a regulator for the HSFD system to attenuate transient vibration for both sudden unbalance and transient runup through critical speeds. A complete mathematical model of this closed-loop system is simulated on a digital computer. Results show an overall enhanced behavior for the closed-loop rotor system. Gain scheduling of both the integral gain and the reference input is incorporated into the closed-loop system with the PI regulator and results in an enhanced behavior of the controlled system.

Using the convex model theory, the reliability-based analysis of frequency of the vibration control problem of structures with Interval parameters is discussed. Based on the theory of perturbation method, reliability analysis, and PNET method, the method of reliability-based analysis of eigenvalues of closed-loop vibration control systems with uncertain parameters is studied. And the distribution function of the random eigenvalues will not be computed other than their means and variances. The standard deviations of eigenvalues of the uncertain closed-loop systems can be used to estimate the reliability of frequency. The numerical results show that the present method is effective.

This paper presents a study concerning the vibration control of smart flexible sub-structures of satellite during attitude maneuver. A comparison between the collocated and non-collocated piezoceramic patches acting as sensors and actuators is performed in order to investigate their effectiveness to suppress vibrations in flexible substructures. A rigid hub with two elastic appendages containing surface bounded piezoelectric patches is being considered as satellite model. Finite element method and Lagrangian formulation are used for derivation of system equations of motion. Stability proof of the overall closed-loop system is given via Lyapunov analysis. The numerical simulations verify the results of the study.

An integrated, compact piezohydraulic actuator system for active vibration control was designed and developed with a primary application for gas turbine aircraft engines. Copper tube was chosen as the transmission line material for ease of assembly. Liquid plastic, which meets incompressibility and low-viscosity requirements, was adjusted to provide optimal actuator performance. Variants of the liquid plastic have been prepared with desired properties between −40°F and 400°F. The effectiveness of this hybrid actuator for active vibration control (AVC) was demonstrated for suppressing critical speed vibration through two critical speeds for various levels of intentionally placed imbalance. A high-accuracy closed-loop simulation, which combines both finite element and state space methods, was applied for the closed-loop unbalance response simulation with/without AVC. Good correlation between the simulation and test results was achieved.

This article describes the practical application of a vibration control technique, developed by the authors and known as the receptance method, to the AgustaWestland W30 helicopter airframe in the vibration test house at Yeovil. The experimental work was carried out over a total of 5 days in two visits to the Yeovil site during February and March 2011. In the experiments, existing electro-hydraulic actuators were used; they were built into the airframe structure and originally designed for vibration suppression by the methodology known as active control of structural response developed at the AgustaWestland Helicopters site in Yeovil. Accelerometers were placed at a large number of points around the airframe and an initial open-loop modal test was carried out. In a subsequent test, at higher actuator input voltage, considerable non-linearity was discovered, to the extent that the ordering of certain modes had changed. The vibration modes were, in general, heavily damped. Control was implemented using measured frequency response functions obtained at the higher input level. After acquiring the necessary measurements, simulations were carried out and the controller was implemented using MATLAB/Simulink and dSPACE. The closed-loop poles were mostly assigned with small real parts so that the system would be lightly damped and sharp peaks would be clearly apparent in the measured closed-loop frequency response functions. Locations of the open- and closed-loop poles in the complex s-plane were obtained to verify that the required assignment of poles had taken place.
