AbstractThe uncertainty principle imposes a fundamental limit on predicting the measurement outcomes of incompatible observables even if complete classical information of the system state is known. The situation is different if one can build a quantum memory entangled with the system. Zero uncertainty states (in contrast with minimum uncertainty states) are peculiar quantum states that can eliminate uncertainties of incompatible von Neumann observables once assisted by suitable measurements on the memory. Here we determine all zero uncertainty states of any given set of nondegenerate observables and determine the minimum entanglement required. It turns out all zero uncertainty states are maximally entangled in a generic case, and vice versa, even if these observables are only weakly incompatible. Our work establishes a simple and precise connection between zero uncertainty and maximum entanglement, which is of interest to foundational studies and practical applications, including quantum certification and verification.

Self-interference (SI) is usually generated by the simultaneous transmission and reception in the same system, and the variable SI channel and impulsive noise make it difficult to eliminate. Therefore, this paper proposes an adaptive digital SI cancellation algorithm, which is an improved normalized sub-band adaptive filtering (NSAF) algorithm based on the sparsity of the SI channel and the arctangent cost function. The weight vector is hardly updated when the impulsive noise occurs, and the iteration error resulting from impulsive noise is significantly reduced. Another major factor affecting the performance of SI cancellation is the variable SI channel. To solve this problem, the sparsity of the SI channel is estimated with the estimation of the weight vector at each iteration, and it is used to adjust the weight vector. Then, the convergence performance and calculation complexity are analyzed theoretically. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm has better performance than the referenced algorithms.

Abstract The possibility of acoustic wave propagation in optical waveguides creates new prospects for simultaneous transmission of laser beams and ultrasonic waves. Combined laser-ultrasonic technology could be useful in e.g. surgical treatment. The article presents the results of experimental studies of transmission of ultrasonic wave in optical fibres, the core of which is doped by 7.5% of TiO2, using a sandwich-type transducer. It also presents amplitude characteristics of an ultrasonic signal propagated in the optical fibre. Authors studied the effect which the length of the fibre has on the achieved output signal amplitudes. They presented the relation of the output signal amplitude from a capacitive sensor to the power applied to the sandwich-type transducer. The obtained results were compared with the results produced when using an optical fibre with a core doped by 3% of GeO2, in order to select optical fibre suitable for simultaneous transmission of ultrasonic waves and laser rays.

We obtain a maximizer for the quantum mutual information for classical information sent over the quantum amplitude damping channel. This is achieved by limiting the ensemble of input states to antipodal states, in the calculation of the product state capacity for the channel. We also consider the product state capacity of a convex combination of two memoryless channels and demonstrate in particular that it is in general not given by the minimum of the capacities of the respective memoryless channels.
