This paper discusses a digital twin-based approach for designing and redesigning flexible assembly systems. The digital twin allows modeling the parameters of the production system at different levels including assembly process, production station, and line level. The approach allows dynamically updating the digital twin in runtime, synthesizing data from multiple 2D–3D sensors in order to have up-to-date information about the actual production process. The model integrates both geometrical information and semantics. The model is used in combination with an artificial intelligence logic in order to derive alternative configurations of the production system. The overall approach is discussed with the help of a case study coming from the automotive industry. The case study introduces a production system integrating humans and autonomous mobile dual arm workers.

Abstract The present study aims to demonstrate the relevance of topic modeling as a new research tool for analyzing research trends in the T&I field. Until now, most efforts to this end have relied on manual classification based on pre-established typologies. This method is time- and labor-consuming, prone to subjective biases, and limited in describing a vast amount of research output. As a key component of text mining, topic modeling offers an efficient way of summarizing topic structure and trends over time in a collection of documents while being able to describe the entire system without having to rely on sampling. As a case study, the present paper applies the technique to analyzing a collection of abstracts from four Korean Language T&I journals for the 2010s decade (from 2010 to 2019). The analysis proves the technique to be highly successful in uncovering hidden topical structure and trends in the abstract corpus. The results are discussed along with implications of the technique for the T&I field.

Customer satisfaction is a key element for survival and competitiveness in industrial companies. This paper describes a case study in a manufacturing company that deals with several customer complaints due to defective custom cable assemblies that are integrated in an engine. The goal of this research is to find a solution to this problem, as well as prevent its recurrence by implementing the eight disciplines (8Ds) method in order to: (1) develop a team, (2) describe the problem, (3) develop an interim containment action, (4) determine and verify root causes, (5) develop permanent corrective actions, (6) define and implement corrective actions, (7) prevent recurrences, and (8) recognize and congratulate teamwork as well as individual contributions. Therefore, a software tool is proposed to conduct a functional test on assembly lines. After the test, the problem was successfully reduced and detected, because from 67 engines that were identified with problems, 51 were redesigned before being sent to customers, consequently decreasing the number of defective products by 75%, whereas the remaining 16 engines were replaced by new engines. In conclusion, the research goal was accomplished, and the 8Ds method proved to be a helpful model with which to increase employees’ motivation and involvement during the problem-solving process.

We present a variant of the approach to the assembly line balancing problems, with the aim of reducing the ergonomic risk for operators of mixed-model assembly lines (MILP-3). Specifically, the MILP-3 model is focused on minimizing the average range between ergonomic risk values of workstations. Using a case study from Nissan’s plant in Barcelona, not only are the differences between levels of ergonomic risk of stations reduced, but we attempt to reduce the average maximum ergonomic risk of the assembly line. The new model is compared with two others, MILP-1 and MILP-2, which minimize the average maximum ergonomic risk and the average absolute deviation of the risks, respectively.

<p><em>The purpose of this research is to verify the validity of an antecedent-consequence integrating model of recreationist-environment fit (R-E fit). This study selected the marine sport tourists in the Guaninting waters of Penghu as the subjects. The research used a questionnaire survey with 300 questionnaires handed out and returned. Of these, 253 were valid and 47 were invalid; therefore, the effective response rate was 84.3%. Then the associated data were collected for descriptive statistical analysis and structural equation modeling analysis using statistical software SPSS20.0 and Smart PLS 2.0. The research results reveal the following conclusions: (1) Familiarity has significant influence on R-E fit; (2) Self-efficacy has significant influence on R-E fit; (3) Restorative environment features have significant influence on R-E fit; (4) Recreational environment hassles have little significant influence on R-E fit; (5) R-E fit has significant influence on flow experience; (6) R-E fit has significant influence on recreational satisfaction; and (7) R-E fit has significant influence on destination loyalty. Accordingly, at the end of this study, suggestions </em><em>are offered for future research, along with implications for tourism management.</em></p>

This article presents an investigation of the gravity hill phenomena by analysing its geospatial data. Wadi Al Baida located in Al Madinah, Saudi Arabia has been taken as a case study. Wadi Al Baida is listed as one of the sites in the world where the said phenomena exists, but the site has been famous for any sort of magnetic force because the vehicles move uphill and on flat road without any engine power on. The topography of the valley is studied by using the geospatial data of the area and by creating Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) based on Point Kriging method of gridding. The results show that the area has natural slope and there is a significant difference in the elevations of the start and the end point of the valley. A longitudinal profile is also generated to validate the results obtained by DEMs and it is found that the road has an average slope of 2.6% which makes the vehicles and rolling objects move on their own due to the force of gravity. Also, the concept of gravity hill has been explained with the help of a diagram which is easy to understand by the readers.
