Abstract A new binary ZnII coordination polymer, [Zn(2-cpa)(H2O)] n (2D-Zn) has been prepared by a 120 °C hydrothermal reaction of zinc(II) sulfate heptahydrate and 2-carboxy phenoxyacetic acid (2-H2cpa) in the presence of potassium hydroxide. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the ZnII ion is located in a deformed ZnO6 octahedron bonded by one water and three 2-carboxy phenoxyacetate (2-cpa) ligands. The 2-cpa exhibits pentadentate double bridging chelate-μ 3 coordination mode and connects adjacent ZnII ions to generate a corrugated (4,4)-connected layer structure. The structures, conformation of 2-cpa and photoluminescence spectra for 2D-Zn have been carefully analyzed and compared with its two closely related compounds ̶ 1D [Zn(2-cpa)(H2O)] n (1D-Zn) and mononuclear [Zn(2-cpa)(H2O)3] (0D-Zn). The results showed that the conformation of 2-cpa in 2D-Zn has the maximum alteration and the corresponding fluorescence emission peak of 2D-Zn has the largest red-shift of 62 nm compared with that of free 2-H2cpa.

In recent years, much initial interest and enthusiasm has focused on the self-assembly of coordination polymers due to the aesthetics of their crystalline architectures and their potential applications as new functional materials. As part of an exploration of chiral coordination polymers, a new twofold interpenetrated two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer, namely, poly[[tetraaquabis[μ3-(2R,2′R)-2,2′-(benzene-1,4-dicarboxamido)dipropionato-κ5 O,O′:O′′,O′′′:O′′]dicadmium(II)] trihydrate], {[Cd2(C14H14N2O6)2(H2O)4]·3H2O} n , has been synthesized by the reaction of Cd(CH3COO)2·2H2O with the designed ligand (2R,2′R)-2,2′-(benzene-1,4-dicarboxamido)dipropionic acid (H2 L). The compound has been structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In the crystal structure, each CdII cation binds to three carboxylate groups from two crystallographically independent L 2− dianions. Four carboxylate groups link two crystallographically independent cadmium cations into a 4,4-connected secondary building unit (SBU). The resulting SBUs are extended into a two-dimensional folding sheet via the terephthalamide moiety of the ligand as a spacer, which can be simplified as a (4,4)-connected 4,4L15 net with the point symbol (3.53.62)(32.52.62). In the lattice, two independent folding sheets interpenetrate each other to yield a double-sheet layer. The resulting 2D layers pack in parallel arrays through intermolecular hydrogen bonds and interlayer π–π interactions. The thermal stability and photoluminescence properties of the title compound have been investigated and it exhibits an enhanced fluorescence emission and a longer lifetime compared with free H2 L.

The article presents the possibilities of the complex application of methods of radiation diagnostics: bone x-ray, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, computed tomography, positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography using fluorodeoxyglucose labeled with 18-fluorine (PET/CT with 18F-FDG) in a patient with multiple myeloma, which was treated in the amount of high-dose therapy with autologous transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells. The diagnosis was established immunohistochemically. The use of these methods allowed us to dynamically assess the pathological changes characteristic of multiple myeloma.

Two new zinc(II) complexes have been prepared by reaction of 2-(2’-Hydroxyphenyl)-2-oxazoline(Hoz) with Zn(acac)2 and ZnCl2 respectively. The complexes are characterized by IR and X-ray crystallography. Complex 1 is dinuclear zinc structure bridged by the oxygen atoms from oz- ligand and acac- ligand as terminal chelating ligand. Complex 2 is tetranuclear zinc structure bridged by both μ2-oxygen from oz- ligand and μ3-methoxide. 1 crystalizes in P21 space group with crystallographic parameters: a=9.3842Å19), b=13.5840 Å30), c=11.1380 Å20), β=96.250°(30). 2 crystalizes in P-1 space group with crystallographic parameters: a=9.5517Å(19), b=11.1234Å(22), c=11.1826Å(22), α=102.820°(30), β=114.988°(30), γ=100.806°(30). The UV absorption and fluorescence emission spectra are measured on the methanol solution and solid state of complex 1 and it shows strong luminescence.

Electron microscopy showed that electron-dense granules accumulated in Propionibacterium acnes in larger amounts when the bacteria were grown on a phosphate-rich medium. X-ray microanalysis demonstrated that the granules contained mostly phosphorus and potassium, indicating that the cells contained polyphosphate granules. When cells were grown on a complex Bacto-agar medium, the amount and the size of the polyphosphate granules were reduced. Polyphosphate was also detected with 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (31P-NMR). Of the polyphosphates observed with 31P-NMR, 20% seemed to be located outside the cell membrane. Broad-band near-ultraviolet irradiation (emission maximum 366 nm) corresponding to doses that killed 37% of the cells increased the amount of polyphosphate in cells grown on the phosphate-rich medium. The fluorescent chromophore 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) shifted the fluorescence emission from 478 to 538 nm when bound to polyphosphate and excited at 340 nm. DAPI was used to detect polyphosphates generated after near-ultraviolet irradiation of the cells. Nonirradiated cells showed no increased fluorescence at 538 nm, indicating no polyphosphates, even if polyphosphate is present in the cells. We conclude that DAPI did not have "access" to the intracellular polyphosphate as long as the cells were not light damaged. This observation is important for the interpretation of near-UV damage to cells. Key words: electron and X-ray microscopy, fluorescence, DAPI, 31P-NMR, granule.

Excellent fluorescence properties are exhibited by d 10 metal compounds. The novel three-dimensional ZnII coordination framework, poly[[{μ2-bis[4-(2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)phenyl] ether-κ2 N 3:N 3′}(μ2-furan-2,5-dicarboxylato-κ2 O 2:O 5)zinc(II)] 1.76-hydrate], {[Zn(C6H2O5)(C20H18N4O)]·1.76H2O} n , has been prepared and characterized using IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure analysis revealed that the compound exhibits a novel fourfold interpenetrating diamond-like network. This polymer also displays a strong fluorescence emission in the solid state at room temperature.
