Abstract Introduction Turner syndrome is a genetic disorder in females and is the result of complete or partial loss of an X chromosome during fertilization. The missing X chromosome is originally either from the mother's ovum or the father's sperm cell. Approximately 45% of patients have the 45,X karyotype and the rest have other variants of Turner syndrome, which are either mosaicism patterns or structural abnormalities of the X chromosome. Here, we report a case of Turner syndrome that is the fifth case of Turner syndrome with balanced Robertsonian translocation of (13;14)(q10;q10), and the sixth case with 44,X chromosomes, reported in the literature thus far. Case presentation A 10.3-year-old Persian girl was brought to our clinic by her parents, with the complaint of failure to thrive and short height. She had been examined and investigated by endocrinologists since the age of 4 years, but no definite diagnosis was made. At the time of presentation, she had been through three provocative growth hormone tests and had been on no medications for about a year. Her physical examination revealed mild retrognathia and micrognathia. Initially, she was started on somatropin treatment which, after 12 months, did not appropriately improve her height velocity. Therefore, a more thorough physical examination was performed, in which high arched palate and low posterior hairline were observed. There was also a difference between target height and patient height standard deviation scores. Karyotype study was requested, and Turner syndrome was confirmed. Conclusion The diagnosis of this case was not straightforward, both because the somatic presentations were not obvious, and because the physicians had not looked for them when performing the physical examinations. This case report introduces a rare 44,X chromosome karyotype of Turner syndrome and highlights the value in using the difference between target height and patient height standard deviation scores as a simple and inexpensive tool for diagnosis of this syndrome.

Abstract. This paper introduces a novel target height estimation approach using a Frequency Modulation Continuous Wave (FMCW) automotive radar. The presented algorithm takes advantage of radar wave multipath propagation to measure the height of objects in the vehicle surroundings. A multipath propagation model is presented first, then a target height is formulated using geometry, based on the presented propagation model. It is then shown from Sensor-Target geometry that height estimation of targets is highly dependent on the radar range resolution, target range and target height. The high resolution algorithm RELAX is discussed and applied to collected raw data to enhance the radar range resolution capability. This enables a more accurate height estimation especially for low targets. Finally, the results of a measurement campaign using corner reflectors at different heights are discussed to show that target heights can be very accurately resolved by the proposed algorithm and that for low targets an average mean height estimation error of 0.03 m has been achieved by the proposed height finding algorithm.

Archerfish down a variety of aerial prey from a range of distances using water jets that they adjust to size and distance of their prey. We describe here that characteristic rapid fin maneuvers, most notably of the pectoral and pelvic fins, are precisely coordinated with the release of the jet. We discovered these maneuvers in two fish that had been trained to shoot from fixed positions at targets in different height, whose jets had been characterized in detail and who remained stable during their shots. Based on the findings in these individuals we examined shooting-associated fin-movement in 28 further archerfish of two species that could shoot from freely chosen positions at targets of different height. Slightly before onset of the water jet, at a time when the shooter remains stable, the pectoral fins of all shooters switched from asynchronous low-amplitude beating to a synchronized rapid forward flap. Onset and duration of the forward and subsequent backward flap were robust across all individuals and shooting angles but depended on target height. The pelvic fins are slowly adducted at the start of the jet and stop after its release. All other fins also showed a characteristic sequence of activation, some starting about 0.5 s before the shot. Our findings suggest that shooting-related fin-maneuvers are needed to stabilize the shooter and that they are an important component in the precise and powerful far-distance shooting in archerfish.

Abstract Cushing’s disease is associated with growth failure in childhood and adolescence. Growth and final height were analyzed in 10 patients who were cured or in remission after treatment of Cushing’s disease. Seven males and 3 females, aged 6.8–17.6 yr (bone age, 3.3- 15.4 yr), had transsphenoidal surgery, which was combined with pituitary irradiation (4500 cGy in 25 fractions) in 5 patients. At presentation, 5 patients were prepubertal (males), and 5 were pubertal (2 males and 3 females). The mean height sd score was −2.15 ± 1.26 (range, −0.21 to −4.32) compared with mean target height sd score of −0.43 ± 0.58. Height velocity in 6 patients was subnormal (0.9–3.8 cm/yr). After treatment, short-term height velocity, over a mean interval of 0.57 yr, in 8 patients not receiving human GH (hGH) therapy, was variable (range, 0.8–7.6 cm/yr). GH stimulation tests (insulin tolerance test/glucagon) in 9 subjects showed peak GH levels of 0.5–20.9 mU/L. Eight were treated with hGH (14 IU/m2·wk), combined in 2 girls and 1 boy with a GnRH analog. After 1 yr of hGH, the mean height sd score had increased from −2.45 ± 1.0 at initiation of hGH to −2.07± 1.2 (P = 0.01). GH therapy was continued until final height or latest assessment. The mean final height sd score (n = 6) was −1.24 ± 1.38, and at the latest assessment the mean height sd score (n = 4) was− 1.52 ± 1.33. Combining these 2 groups, the mean height sd score was −1.36 ± 1.29. The difference between final or latest height sd score and target height sd score was 0.93 ± 1.13, i.e. less (P = 0.005) than the difference between height and target height sd score of 1.72 ± 1.26 at presentation. In conclusion, catch-up and favorable long-term growth was seen after treatment for Cushing’s disease. Posttreatment GH deficiency was frequent, and early hGH replacement may have contributed to the encouraging outcome.

We previously showed that inactivating the anterior interpositus nucleus in cats disrupts prehension; paw paths, normally straight and accurate, become curved, hypometric, and more variable. In the present study, we determined the joint kinematic and dynamic origins of this impairment. Animals were restrained in a hammock and trained to reach and grasp a cube of meat from a narrow food well at varied heights; movements were monitored using the MacReflex analysis system. The anterior interpositus nucleus was inactivated by microinjection of the GABA agonist muscimol (0.25–0.5 μg in 0.5 μL saline). For each joint, we computed the torque due to gravity, inertial resistance (termed self torque), interjoint interactions (termed interaction torque), and the combined effects of active muscle contraction and passive soft tissue stretch (termed generalized muscle torque). Inactivation produced significant reductions in the amplitude, velocity, and acceleration of elbow flexion. However, these movements continued to scale normally with target height. Shoulder extension was reduced by inactivation but wrist angular displacement and velocity were not. Inactivation also produced changes in the temporal coordination between elbow, shoulder, and wrist kinematics. Dynamic analysis showed that elbow flexion both before and during inactivation was produced by the combined action of muscle and interaction torque, but that the timing depended on muscle torque. Elbow interaction and muscle torques were scaled to target height both before and during inactivation. Inactivation produced significant reductions in elbow flexor interaction and muscle torques. The duration of elbow flexor muscle torque was prolonged to compensate for the reduction in flexor interaction torque. Shoulder extension was produced by extensor interaction and muscle torques both before and during inactivation. Inactivation produced a reduction in shoulder extension, primarily by reduced interaction torque, but without compensation. Wrist plantarflexion, which occurred during elbow flexion, was driven by plantarflexor interaction and gravitational torques both before and during inactivation. Muscle torque acted in the opposite direction with a phase lead to restrain the plantarflexor interaction torque. During inactivation, there was a reduction in plantarflexor interaction torque and a loss of the phase lead of the muscle torque. Our findings implicate the C1/C3 anterior interpositus zone of the cerebellum in the anticipatory control of intersegmental dynamics during reaching, which zone is required for coordinating the motions of the shoulder and wrist with those of the elbow. In contrast, this cerebellar zone does not play a role in scaling the movement to match a target.

Abstract Context Gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues (GnRHa) and recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) have been widely used to treat idiopathic central precocious puberty (CPP) or early and fast puberty (EFP). However, large-scale studies to evaluate the treatment effects on final adult height (FAH) are still lacking. Objective To assess the effects of long-term treatment for CPP/EFP on FAH and its main influencing factors. Design and Setting Retrospective, multicenter observational study from 1998 to 2017. Participants Four hundred forty-eight Chinese girls with CPP/EFP received GnRHa and rhGH treatment (n = 118), GnRHa alone (n = 276), or no treatment (n = 54). Main Outcome Measures FAH, target height (Tht), and predictive adult height (PAH). Results The height gain (FAH–PAH) was significantly different among the GnRHa and rhGH treatment, GnRHa alone, and no treatment groups (P < 0.05; 9.51 ± 0.53, 8.07 ± 0.37, and 6.44 ± 0.91 cm, respectively). The genetic height gain (FAH–Tht) was 4.0 ± 0.5 cm for the GnRHa + rhGH group and 2.0 ± 0.27 cm for the GnRHa group, while the control group reached their Tht. In addition, 5 critical parameters derived from PAH, bone age, and Tht, showed excellent performance in predicting which patients could gain ≥5 cm (FAH–PAH), and this was further validated using an independent study. Conclusions The overall beneficial effect of GnRHa + rhGH or GnRHa on FAH was significant. The control group also reached their genetic target height. Clinicians are recommended to consider both the potential gains in height and the cost of medication.
